Several questions.
- Who is allowed to upload names to the database?
- Why are snarky comments (“Rose would be sweeter”) allowed on cultural names — hell, any names in general? I’m not trying to be an a-hole. [name_m]Just[/name_m] don’t understand the point of comments like these. I understand if there is important cultural context needed that could sway somebody from using or not using a name. Like, there SHOULD be a comment saying don’t name your kid [name_m]Adolf[/name_m] or something, but why bother with the negativity of putting down a perfectly reasonable name that might hold cultural significance for some families? Shouldn’t opinions be left to the forums?
This isn’t the only example I’ve seen, just the most recent. Not trying to call anybody out, hence the censoring, just don’t understand why this is such a common occurrence on Nameberry.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] @flytrap
Great questions!
Me and a handful of other people make up the editorial team for Nameberry, and we add/edit names in the database.
Despite the status saying “updated on ___ date by ___”, the large large majority of names in the database have not been updated since they were originally uploaded to the site almost two decades ago. The “most recent update” date as pictured in your screenshot is simply when the website had its last routine system update, and each name entry is randomly assigned one of the editorial staff as the most recent editor. This is confusing, so my apologies! [name_m]Just[/name_m] how the software we use happens to work.
The small team of us do our best to correct the more comments on name entries as we are able to, but it is an ongoing process and we are a small staff with limited time.
I have just edited the entry for [name_f]Rada[/name_f], and this update should be visible on the name page within a few days!

[name_m]Just[/name_m] to add, a lot of these descriptions are old and we’ve been working on updating and refreshing them - but the database is huge, so, what’s super helpful is if you flag up any you see like this on this thread:
Database entries you’d like to see amended - All About Nameberry - Nameberry
It’s checked regularly and negative/dismissive descriptions are being changed!
