The grandmother thread got me thinking about this again. I am due with a baby girl on 12-22, so it’s really down to the wire But ever since my grandmother (who lived with use from the time I was 3 years old) passed away a few years ago, I have been thinking of ways to name a baby girl after her. Her name was Darcus, but everyone called her [name]Dot[/name]. I really don’t want to use the name Darcus, it’s just not very pretty to me at all…but I think [name]Dot[/name] is really cute, or maybe [name]Dottie[/name]…BUT I don’t know if it’s a ‘big’ enough name to use as a stand alone name rather than a nickname for a longer name. The problem is that I cannot think of any longer names that I like that [name]Dot[/name] would be a good nickname for. [name]Dorothy[/name] is off limits because it is my mom’s stepmom’s name.
Another alternative would be to use it as a middle name and use it as a nickname. so far we are considering [name]Stella[/name], [name]Ella[/name], and [name]Nora[/name] for first names, but I feel like I need a longer list to choose from.
So you don’t like [name]Dorothy[/name] or [name]Dorothea[/name]?
Hmm.
Her initials could spell [name]DOT[/name]? Eg [name]Daisy[/name] [name]Olivia[/name] [name]Therese[/name] or something?
Hmm, the only name other than [name]Dorothy[/name]/[name]Dorothea[/name] I’ve heard with [name]Dot[/name] is [name]Theodora[/name]. But you could use it for other [name]Do[/name]–names maybe?
It’s not really my style, but I was reading another thread after reading this one about the name [name]Peridot[/name]. You could get [name]Dot[/name] from that…
If [name]Dorothy[/name] and [name]Dorothea[/name] are out, how about [name]Odette[/name] or [name]Ottilie[/name]? [name]Dot[/name] and [name]Dottie[/name] don’t seem like too much of a stretch. [name]Odette[/name] is nice I think; it’s also the princess’ name in Swan [name]Lake[/name].
You said you like [name]Nora[/name] so what about using [name]Dora[/name] as first name? I think you could use [name]Dot[/name] as a nice name for any name starting with do…
Names I think you could use [name]Dot[/name] as nn for:
[name]Dora[/name]
[name]Dolores[/name]
[name]Donna[/name]
[name]Doretta[/name]
[name]Dorcia[/name]
[name]Doreen[/name]
[name]Doria[/name]
[name]Dorina[/name]
I personally really like [name]Dora[/name] and [name]Donna[/name] nn [name]Dot[/name].
I really like gwensmum’s suggestion of [name]Odette[/name]!
These aren’t all my style, but I thought I’d give you as big a choice as possible. Some of them are a bit of a stretch – but I’m very liberal with nicknames
Alternatively, you could use a name with the same route to your grandmother’s name. I’m assuming that Darcus is a alternate spelling of [name]Dorcas[/name], which itself came from the ancient Greek rendering of the bible as a translation for the Hebrew name [name]Tabitha[/name].
So [name]Tabitha[/name] would be a good way of honouring your grandmother
