[name]Hi[/name], I’m due with #1 a girl in [name]September[/name]. Parents are [name]Anna[/name] and [name]Adam[/name]. We live in the UK. Please feel free to leave comments, and suggest combos. Can you put them in order, 1-8 which you like best? Thank you xx
[name]Isla[/name] - I find this name quite sophistacted (and adorable).
[name]Clara[/name] - I love this, only came in as #2 because [name]Isla[/name] is a bit more exotic.
[name]Eva[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Orlaith[/name] ([name]Orla[/name])
[name]Penny[/name] - prefer Peneplope
[name]Layla[/name]
[name]Darcy[/name]
1-[name]Clara[/name], I love this name. It is so sweet. It is so easy to come up with great nn combos like [name]Clara[/name] [name]Brynn[/name], [name]Clara[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Clara[/name] [name]Sonnet[/name]. The possibilities are endless.
2-[name]Ruby[/name], I also love this name. [name]IMO[/name] it is sweet but has a little more spunk to it. Some possible combos are [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Emmaline[/name], [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Giselle[/name], [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Marin[/name] ([name]MAR[/name]-in).
3-[name]Layla[/name], I do prefer the name [name]Lela[/name] ([name]LEE[/name]-la) to [name]Layla[/name], but it is still a great name.
4-[name]Isla[/name], I would pair this with a longer mn like [name]Isla[/name] [name]Mirabelle[/name] or [name]Isla[/name] [name]Georgiana[/name]
5-[name]Orlaith[/name], I think the name [name]Orla[/name] is adorable. Would you consider using it as the given name?
6- [name]Eva[/name], Very cute, but also very popular. Maybe you could use it as a nn, like [name]Evalyn[/name], which I love! [name]Evalyn[/name] [name]Meredith[/name] or [name]Evalyn[/name] [name]Penelope[/name].
7-[name]Penny[/name], while I think this name is cute, I like [name]Penelope[/name] much better. I have bad name association with [name]Penny[/name]'s I have met in the past.
8-[name]Darcy[/name], just not a big fan of this one. You have some great names on your list, so this one is off for me.
[name]Darcy[/name] - I love this name, a distant relative recently had a baby girl called [name]Darcy[/name] [name]Annabel[/name]
[name]Penny[/name] (though I’d prefer [name]Penelope[/name] nn [name]Penny[/name]) - [name]Penny[/name]'s cute but I think a full name would be better with the nn [name]Penny[/name] to give her the choice of using her full name when she’s an adult
[name]Layla[/name] (though I’d prefer [name]Leila[/name]) - Beautiful name, I recently met a young girl in [name]Egypt[/name] (she was about 8 and working pulling camels on the camel rides :() whose name was [name]Leila[/name]. When she said it I instantly thought how beautiful it sounded.
[name]Eva[/name] - I do like this name a lot, but I hate how popular [name]Eva[/name], [name]Eve[/name], [name]Ava[/name], [name]Evelyn[/name], [name]Evie[/name] etc have all become recently. For that reason, I’d stay clear, but it could make a nice middle name maybe?
[name]Clara[/name] - I like the vintage charm of this name but reminds me a little of [name]Clarabelle[/name] cow :S That’s the only thing that puts me off though and it’s very minor!
[name]Orlaith[/name] - This isn’t my favourite name but it’s definitely pretty and unique. Might give her some problems with spelling/pronounciation etc unless of course you live in [name]Ireland[/name]?
[name]Ruby[/name] - I’m not a huge fan of [name]Ruby[/name]. It reminds me of [name]Ruby[/name] Wax, [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Murray[/name] (cockney rhyming slang) [name]Ruby[/name] Slippers and [name]Charlotte[/name] Church! It’s also very trendy at the moment but I’m not sure if that bothers you.
[name]Isla[/name] - see above! Also incredibly trendy and just not my favourite. It’s a little too soft for me. Have you considered [name]Ailsa[/name]? I think it’s much prettier personally!
[name]Clara[/name]- i think this one is very pretty
[name]Darcy[/name]- i could see this on a baby girl and a grown up
[name]Layla[/name]- i think this one is very girly
[name]Penny[/name]- a little old lady but i think it could still be really cute on a little girl
[name]Eva[/name]- this one is okay
[name]Ruby[/name]- i find this one a little hard and less girly
[name]Orlaith[/name]- not my fav i can’t really see it on a real person
[name]Isla[/name]- my least fav not girly at all and exotic not in a good charming way just weird
[name]Isla[/name] - I love this name and think it’s very sweet and sophisticated
[name]Ruby[/name] - another one I love. Cute but still works on an adult.
[name]Eva[/name] - I like this name a lot, but prefer [name]Evelyn[/name] or [name]Evangeline[/name]. [name]Eva[/name] is sweet though and I do love the nickname [name]Evie[/name].
[name]Clara[/name] - I feel like this name is okay, but to me there’s nothing extremely special about it (but thats just me)
[name]Orlaith[/name] ([name]Orla[/name]) - I like this name but like your other names better.
[name]Layla[/name] - This name is getting really popular in the US (not sure about the UK). I’m just a bit bored of it, honestly, and I feel like it lacks personality. If you do use it I think the spelling [name]Leila[/name] looks a bit cleaner.
[name]Darcy[/name] - This name just makes me think of Mr. [name]Darcy[/name] in P&P. A bit less modern/cool than your other names.
[name]Penny[/name] - I love this as a nickname for [name]Penelope[/name], but as a given name I’m not a huge fan. Seems to cutesy for an adult.
So, all in all, I love [name]Isla[/name] and [name]Ruby[/name], and [name]Eva[/name] comes in a close third. I’d pair all of them with something longer, to balance out the short two syllable sound of all the names, something like [name]Isla[/name] [name]Evangeline[/name], [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Josephine[/name] or [name]Eva[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name] would work nicely.
[name]Orlaith[/name] ([name]Orla[/name]) - regardless of possible or-layth pronunciation, I adore this name and adore it all the more in its original Irish form (well, if you wanted to be very original it would be [name]Orfhlaith[/name], but this is close enough!).
[name]Clara[/name] - pretty, accessible and not too popular.
[name]Isla[/name] - lovely, but getting popular.
[name]Penny[/name] - this shoots above [name]Clara[/name] if you use [name]Penelope[/name] nn [name]Penny[/name], though (I’m not sure just [name]Penny[/name] is substantial enough, although it is very sweet).
[name]Eva[/name] - very popular, but also classic and pretty.
[name]Ruby[/name] - quite nice, but not my favourite of your options by far, and it is getting popular.
[name]Layla[/name] - even though it isn’t, it does look trendy to me. It has a nice sound, but double-L names are set to rise.
[name]Darcy[/name] - much more masculine than your other choices, and even [name]Darcey[/name] Bussel can’t salvage this unappealing surname name for me. If it’s a Pride and Prejudice feel you’re going for, try the lovely [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Georgiana[/name] or [name]Lydia[/name] (or the classics - [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Jane[/name], [name]Katherine[/name] “[name]Kitty[/name]” and [name]Mary[/name]).
I thought you might also be interested to know how popular your name choices are in the UK right now because I know this is of concern to me when choosing names! This is based on baby girls born in the UK in 2008 (most current):
[name]Ruby[/name] - Ranks no 2!! 4924 of them born in 2008
[name]Eva[/name] - Ranks no 41 with 1499 born in 2008, not including the 741 [name]Eve[/name]'s, the 658 [name]Evelyn[/name]'s the 3275 [name]Evie[/name]'s ([name]Evie[/name] ranks at no 10!!) and all the [name]Eva[/name]-[name]May[/name]'s and [name]Eva[/name]-[name]Grace[/name]'s etc
[name]Layla[/name] - Ranks at 68 with 975 born in 2008 spelt this way, [name]Leila[/name] is at 158 with 334 born and [name]Laila[/name] is at 156 with 341 born (add all the spellings together and really it would rank in the top 40 names!)
[name]Clara[/name] - Ranks at 233 with 212 born in 2008, much less trendy than the other names and equally as beautiful!
[name]Penny[/name] - [name]Penny[/name] on it’s own ranks at 578 with only 65 born in 2008 while [name]Penelope[/name] is at 426 with 99 born, again lovely non-trendy names.
[name]Orlaith[/name] ([name]Orla[/name]) - [name]Orlaith[/name] ranks at 668 with only 55 born in 2008 but [name]Orla[/name] ranks at 211 with 244 born in 2008
[name]Isla[/name] - ranks at 36 with 1592 born in 2008!
[name]Darcy[/name] - ranks at 127 with 412 born in 2008 along with 437 [name]Darcey[/name]'s ([name]Darcey[/name] ranks at 119)
[name]Hope[/name] that helps or is at least interesting!!

[name]Ruby[/name] - 3
[name]Eva[/name] - 7
[name]Layla[/name] - 5
[name]Clara[/name] - 8
[name]Penny[/name] - 6
[name]Orlaith[/name] ([name]Orla[/name]) - 4
[name]Isla[/name]- 2
[name]Darcy[/name] - 1 love this name with any spelling [name]Darcie[/name], [name]Darcey[/name], [name]Darcy[/name]
[name]Clara[/name].
Classic, classy, and more exotic than [name]Claire[/name]. I see this intellectual schoolgirl with a sharp mind and sharper tongue. For some reason, I immediately thought [name]Clara[/name] [name]Bell[/name], which is funny because, even though I like [name]Bell[/name], it’s not like it’s on the top of my list. It just seems to flow so perfectly.
[name]Isla[/name].
So rich with the scent of the sea, this name is full and beautiful. Personally, I would spell it [name]Islay[/name], just to differenciate from the actress.
[name]Ruby[/name].
Spunky, sassy, filled with life. A sparkling choice.
[name]Penny[/name].
This would be higher on the list, but I see it as more of a nn than a name. I’d go with [name]Penelope[/name], or if that isn’t your thing, [name]Penina[/name], [name]Penthia[/name], [name]Paulina[/name], [name]Perrin[/name], [name]Pascaline[/name], [name]Apolline[/name], etc.
[name]Eva[/name].
Ditto above. [name]Eva[/name] is just prettier to me as a nn for [name]Evangeline[/name]/-a, [name]Evelyn[/name], [name]Evadne[/name], [name]Evita[/name], [name]Elisheva[/name], [name]Geneva[/name], [name]Ginevra[/name], [name]Genevieve[/name], [name]Maeve[/name]/-a, and so on.
[name]Darcy[/name].
I love [name]Darcy[/name]. I really do. But when I hear it, I think of Mr. [name]Darcy[/name], and I feel a little guilty about thinking of it on a girl. He is, after all, one of the most romantic male literature figures of all time. To think of it on a girl is–is–is practically unholy!
I say this, of course, as a biased [name]Austen[/name] fan, so my words do not necessarily need to be heeded.
[name]Orlaith[/name] ([name]Orla[/name]).
[name]Orla[/name], I can understand. It has that sort of pondering, thoughtful sound. [name]Orlaith[/name], though…I can get some Gaelic names, but this just seems like an unnecessary addition. If you like Gaelic names, I’d probably go with [name]Aoibh[/name] (like your [name]Eva[/name]). With that one, it’s at least obvious that the pronounciation is different.
Then again, I live in the US, so I’m not sure how widely used the [name]Orlaith[/name] spelling is.
[name]Layla[/name].
This sounds like a 90s callback (think: [name]Kayla[/name]) meets 2010’s Lilys, Lolas, Lulus, etc. If you want to use it for the sound, I’d go with [name]Leila[/name] (which I take it can be prn either [name]LEE[/name] or [name]LAY[/name]). It looks much more “real,” for lack of a better term.
Good luck!
NameGoddess
[name]EDIT[/name]: Wait! Is [name]Orlaith[/name] not prn [name]Orla[/name]? That is what I assumed, and that you were putting [name]Orla[/name] as the prn, not the nn, haha! If [name]Orlaith[/name] is prn how it looks, I still like just [name]Orla[/name] best. (:
[name]Hi[/name] girls, thank you SO much for your input, definitely found it extremely interesting, and those of you that have expanded on the names and given middle name suggestions/full name suggestions, you have been most helpful.
We have narrowed our list now to [name]Eva[/name], [name]Ruby[/name] and [name]Leila[/name]. Which we love equally. We want her to have a classy timeless name but for it also to be fun and spunky.
Any suggestions for middle names for [name]Eva[/name], [name]Ruby[/name] and [name]Leila[/name]?
So far, I love : [name]Eva[/name] [name]Katharine[/name], [name]Eva[/name] [name]Daisy[/name], [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Josephine[/name], [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Giselle[/name], [name]Leila[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name]…
Out of [name]Eva[/name], [name]Ruby[/name], and [name]Leila[/name], I definitely prefer [name]Eva[/name]. [name]Leila[/name] is very pretty, but has a trendy feel to it, and it would probably have pronunciation problems. I’ve never been a fan of [name]Ruby[/name]. For middles, I love [name]Eva[/name] [name]Katharine[/name] and [name]Leila[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name].
[name]Leila[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] is lovely!
For the others, I personally would do [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Orlaith[/name] and [name]Eva[/name] [name]Seraphine[/name] (I wanted [name]Eva[/name] and [name]Ruby[/name] to have something a little more unusual in the middle, to distinguis there pretty but popular names).
Good luck! [name]Auburn[/name]
P.S. : My vote is for [name]Eva[/name] [name]Seraphine[/name], but I still love [name]Orlaith[/name]!
1.[name]Orlaith[/name] ([name]Orla[/name])-very original and pretty too
2.[name]Clara[/name]-sweet
3.[name]Isla[/name]-sweet and pretty
4.[name]Penny[/name]-cute
5.[name]Ruby[/name]-cute and extroverted
6.[name]Darcy[/name]-this is ok its cute and not common
7.[name]Layla[/name]- I love [name]Leila[/name], but I had already met a few baby [name]Layla[/name]'s this year
8.[name]Eva[/name]-[name]Lovely[/name], but much to popular to suggest for use this year.
