Hello everyone. Would love some help and advice here..
We are naming our second son, brother to Ocean Jay. Jay is an honour name for my late brother Jay. I would like our new baby to have the name Wren (as in the local Superb Blue Fairy Wren) as a connection to Jay (the Blue Jaybird).
I would give him the first name Wren, as i love the symbolism, meaning, written word and connection to both his brother and my brother’s names, but i just have trouble saying it for some reason, it doesn’t feel right to me when i say it aloud. So I am thinking ok Wren as a middle name, a nice symmetry with Ocean Jay, both bluebird middle names.
But now I am stuck for a first name. I love the name Poet, I love saying it, I like it written, I like the nickname Poe, I like the more nuanced meaning of “a maker of beauty out of ordinary things.'“ But I feel hesitant to tell people that this is his name. I fear people will take it more literally, as pretentious and placing expectations and aspirations on him. We are creative nature loving family but are by no means Poets or Writers and have no preconceived ideas or aspirations for who our children will be or what they will be into. What are your thoughts on Poet?
Should I keep lookong for a first name? So far I havent found any I like as much as Poet. I like soft boys names, open to names that lean feminine but can be gender neutral, word names, nature and whimsy, strong imagery, nothing too matchy with Ocean i.e. no bodies of water.
Any suggestions or advice is much appreciated

Hmm, I like [name_f]Poet[/name_f]. I can also understand your concerns. I think with choosing a bold name you have to get comfortable with the reality that others might have negative perceptions of it, while knowing you chose it for the right reasons for your family.
Usually I’m quite open minded to unique word names, but it’s a name that would feel kind of strange on someone whose not into poetry. [name_m]Like[/name_m], [name_f]Poet[/name_f], the [name_m]Lacrosse[/name_m] captain, or [name_f]Poet[/name_f], the real estate agent. He will be asked his entire life to read his poetry, which would probably get old, particularly if he doesn’t write or care for it. It feels weighty in that sense.
I love [name_m]Ocean[/name_m] because most people love the ocean, and you can’t really possess it, so it feels universally warm and inviting.
what about…
[name_m]Ridge[/name_m], [name_m]Arrow[/name_m], [name_f]Story[/name_f], [name_m]Hollis[/name_m], [name_m]Ever[/name_m], [name_m]Elio[/name_m], [name_m]Asa[/name_m], [name_m]Zephyr[/name_m], [name_m]Scout[/name_m], [name_m]Archer[/name_m], [name_m]Coast[/name_m], [name_m]Ozias[/name_m], [name_f]Briar[/name_f]

Personally, I’m not a huge fan of [name_f]Poet[/name_f]. If anything, I generally prefer [name_f]Poem[/name_f], but it also feels sort of risky compared to [name_m]Ocean[/name_m], which is slightly more common and less specific
Maybe…
[name_f]Briar[/name_f]
[name_f]Cielo[/name_f]
[name_m]Emlyn[/name_m]
[name_m]Faunus[/name_m]
[name_f]Harlow[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_f]Juniper[/name_f]
[name_m]Linden[/name_m]
[name_m]Norwin[/name_m]
[name_m]Rowan[/name_m]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f]
[name_m]Zephyr[/name_m]
I also suggest [name_m]Forest[/name_m] and [name_f]Meadow[/name_f] but they might be a little too place/wordy next to [name_m]Ocean[/name_m]? But that’s up to your discretion!!

Thank you for your thoughts! I actually tend to think the name may only become a bit awkward to wear if he did happen to end up being a writer/poet
anything else and I think it would be pretty cool, [name_f]Poet[/name_f] the football player or [name_f]Poet[/name_f] the engineer. I know I’m in the minority to get a feeling from poet that isn’t so literal. I appreciate your view and thank you for the suggestions!

I love the idea of honouring your brother through both middles - and I also think it can be a bit heavy having an honour name as the first name; I prefer the first name to be the child’s own.
I can see why you’re hesitant on Poet. I love the sound and symbol too but it does make it a little harder for the wearer if they’re not in the arts - or in a celeb community!
Some names that still have the whimsical feel but less prescriptive perhaps:
Poem
Ever
Atlas
Joss
Leif
Jude
Micah
Aven (someone on here just posted this!)
Sorrel
Heath
Emrys
Marlo
Hollis
Rainer (after the poet, not rain)
Indigo
Conrad
Cyrus
Cosmo
Casper
Hartley
Jasper
Rafferty (Raffy/ Raffa)
Phoenix
Sterling
Zephyr
Jarlath
Ziggy
Kai
Edit: also you could experiment with Blue and then other bird names for the middle depending on flow. Eg Joss Cardinal or Rafferty Blue.
But I also think if Poet speaks to you the most, you should use it. I like it! Names are less and less conventional - thank goodness (or everyone still called the 90s names suggested in first post!) - and a Poet lawyer will appear before a Blossom judge.

I really like [name_f]Poet[/name_f] nickname “Poe” with [name_m]Ocean[/name_m].
I think they work well together. If he feels [name_f]Poet[/name_f] doesn’t quite fit him when he’s older he can always go by his nickname or [name_m]Wren[/name_m].
If you love the name go for it!
I also think the suggestions of [name_m]Zephyr[/name_m] and [name_m]Cosmo[/name_m] could work perfectly as well.

I think [name_f]Poet[/name_f] [name_m]Wren[/name_m] is fine if you don’t mind having two word names. Or maybe they could be two middles?
For the two middles idea, maybe: [name_f]Avery[/name_f] [name_f]Poet[/name_f] [name_m]Wren[/name_m], [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_f]Poet[/name_f] [name_m]Wren[/name_m], [name_m]Castle[/name_m] [name_f]Poet[/name_f] [name_m]Wren[/name_m], or [name_m]Lionel[/name_m] [name_f]Poet[/name_f] [name_m]Wren[/name_m]
For only keeping [name_m]Wren[/name_m], maybe: [name_m]Iver[/name_m] [name_m]Wren[/name_m], [name_m]Linwood[/name_m] [name_m]Wren[/name_m], [name_m]Elias[/name_m] [name_m]Wren[/name_m],
For only keeping [name_f]Poet[/name_f], maybe: [name_m]Castle[/name_m] [name_f]Poet[/name_f], [name_m]Iver[/name_m] [name_f]Poet[/name_f], [name_m]Laith[/name_m] (meaning [name_m]Lion[/name_m]) [name_f]Poet[/name_f]
Hopefully these help!

Congratulations!
0cean J@y is such a handsome name. I really like [name_f]Poet[/name_f] as a brother name he feels spirited and artsy. I can see why you’re not completely sold on [name_f]Poet[/name_f] I think maybe the name feels a little more eclectic and lacking the more mainstream feel of 0cean. Still I do really like [name_f]Poet[/name_f] and I love the idea of [name_m]Wren[/name_m] as a honour option for your brother I think [name_f]Poet[/name_f] [name_m]Wren[/name_m] is a fun brother name for 0cean J@y.
You’ve had lots of lovely suggestions so count any repeats as me being in agreement with the berries

Honestly, the more I go over [name_f]Poet[/name_f] [name_m]Wren[/name_m] in my head the more it grows on me. [name_f]Poet[/name_f] might be a bit ahead of its time, but then, so was [name_m]Scout[/name_m]. When people first started being named [name_m]Scout[/name_m] it was a rather polarizing name: loved or vehemently hated; but now it is accepted. I feel like by the time [name_f]Poet[/name_f] becomes a teen and starts getting out into the world his name won’t be an issue. If you really feel that’s the right name, go for it and don’t worry about what other people say.
I love the meaning behind both your boys’ names!
That being said: if the name just isn’t right:
- [name_m]You[/name_m] could consider other types of Jays for inspiration, (the usuable ones being Steller, [name_m]Grey[/name_m], [name_m]Blue[/name_m], and [name_f]Azure[/name_f], otherwise the others are named after places.)
- Is there another family name that is inspirational to you that you could possibly use or use a similar name to that would work for the first name?
- A bit of a stretchy suggestion, but: how do you feel about [name_m]Sky[/name_m]? (There is a fairly famous Skateboarding sibling set [name_m]Sky[/name_m] and [name_m]Ocean[/name_m] [name_m]Brown[/name_m], but, the sky is also a big blue expanse with positive associations. [name_m]Sky[/name_m] [name_m]Wren[/name_m] could be a bit too similar to [name_m]Ocean[/name_m] [name_m]Jay[/name_m] though.)
- In the nature vein: [name_m]Forrest[/name_m] or [name_m]River[/name_m], but sounds like you aren’t looking for another water name. (I have met a guy named Lake.)
- Alternatively, [name_m]Teigan[/name_m] means poet if you want to keep the same meaning, although it is a completely different naming style.
Of the suggestions already submitted, I second [name_f]Story[/name_f] (there’s an astronaut [name_f]Story[/name_f] Musgrave, but also keeps the feel of [name_f]Poet[/name_f] and is also a word name,) and [name_m]Atlas[/name_m]. I also think that the idea of experimenting with [name_m]Blue[/name_m] could be a good way to go as well, (although I personally do not generally agree with color names.)
Ultimately, your child and your family. [name_m]Ocean[/name_m] [name_m]Jay[/name_m] has a lovely name!!! I’m sure whatever you decide on will be just as perfect!
