Hello. Posting again as my last thread was getting long and I think my chances of response died.
I am expecting a delivery surprise later this year, sibling to [name]Frances[/name] [name]Adelaide[/name] and [name]Winston[/name] [name]Romer[/name]
[name]Ramona[/name] (new love)
[name]June[/name]
[name]Gwen[/name]
[name]Charity[/name]
[name]Cicely[/name]/[name]Cecilia[/name]
[name]Laurel[/name]
[name]Temperance[/name]
Middle name options: [name]Camille[/name], [name]Hermione[/name], [name]Maude[/name], suggestions for middle names very very welcome
[name]Basil[/name]
[name]Caspar[/name]
[name]Grover[/name]
[name]Cedric[/name]
[name]Franklin[/name] (but surname ends in ‘ing’ and am unsure whether that makes this name sound daft, or if I am just creating problems that aren’t there)
Middle name options: [name]Prosper[/name], [name]Wilbur[/name], [name]Hamilton[/name], again suggestions for middle names welcome. even MORE help needed for boys tbh.
If anyone could tell me their favourites- or least favourites- and why, that would be fantastic.
[name]Feel[/name] like I like all these names equally, and none of them is feeling like the ‘obvious’ choice.
I adore [name]Ramona[/name]! I am biased, though, as it is my beloved grandmother’s name. [name]Ramona[/name] [name]Camille[/name] would be divine with [name]Frances[/name] [name]Adelaide[/name] and [name]Winston[/name] [name]Romer[/name]. From your boys, I would love to see [name]Cedric[/name] [name]Prosper[/name]. So handsome and dignified.
[name]Charity[/name], [name]Laurel[/name] and [name]Temperance[/name] do not seem quirky and fun to me. They seem kind of serious. [name]Ramona[/name], [name]Gwen[/name] and [name]Cecilia[/name] seem to fit the bill, but [name]Cicely[/name] and [name]Gwen[/name] jumped out at me on your girl’s list. They seem like spunky, fun names to me. [name]Cicely[/name] [name]Camille[/name] is very nice. I don’t really like any of the middles with [name]Gwen[/name] though. I’d have to think about that some more to come up with some suggestions. [name]Cicely[/name], [name]Frances[/name], and [name]Winston[/name] have a lot of “s” sounds so I would pick [name]Gwen[/name]. [name]Gwen[/name], [name]Frances[/name], and [name]Winston[/name] fit well together.
On the boys, I tend to agree that [name]Franklin[/name] with an ing last name might be too much (you might have the same problem with [name]Hamilton[/name] in the middle). But you do already have a [name]Winston[/name] so it didn’t bother you the first time, but then you’ll have the matchy-matchy endings in [name]Franklin[/name] and [name]Winston[/name]. [name]Just[/name] a thought. [name]Grover[/name] is a muppet to me, but he’s lovable so maybe you can get past that. I can’t get past the spice [name]Basil[/name], and [name]Caspar[/name] will always be the friendly ghost to me (though I really, really like the name). That being said, I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Cedric[/name]. Again, I’m not sure that the middles fit with [name]Cedric[/name]. [name]Cedric[/name], [name]Frances[/name], and [name]Winston[/name] again have a lot of “s” sounds so I don’t know if that will bother you or be a plus so they all have a commonality.
I like your kids’ names! From your list, I love [name]Ramona[/name]! And I agree with krismichelle, [name]Ramona[/name] [name]Camille[/name] would be great! Suggestions: [name]Ramona[/name] [name]Celeste[/name], [name]Ramona[/name] [name]Estelle[/name]!
For a boy, I kinda like [name]Grover[/name]! I’ve never really given it much thought before, but it’s nice. [name]Cedric[/name] is ok too. Not a huge fan of the others though. (I think [name]Franklin[/name] is too close to [name]Frances[/name], even if it did work with your last name) [name]Grover[/name] [name]Hamilton[/name] would get my vote. Suggestions: [name]Grover[/name] [name]Hawthorne[/name], [name]Angus[/name] (nn [name]Gus[/name]) [name]Hamilton[/name], [name]Cedric[/name] [name]Prosper[/name], [name]Nigel[/name] [name]Wilbur[/name], [name]Oscar[/name] [name]Lennox[/name].
From your girls’ choices, I like [name]Ramona[/name] and [name]Charity[/name]. I think they both sound beautiful with your other childrens’ names. [name]Ramona[/name] [name]Camille[/name] and [name]Charity[/name] [name]Maude[/name] sound darling.
As for boys’ names, honestly I’m not feeling any of your names. Sorry, I guess they’re just not my style.
Ooh I loved this old thread and I searched for it but couldn’t find it! What about your other middles and likes on the old thread? Are those still in or have you narrowed to this?
From here my favorites are [name]Ramona[/name] (love this one a lot, but what about nns?), [name]Laurel[/name], [name]June[/name], and [name]Cicely[/name] and for boys [name]Grover[/name], [name]Basil[/name] and [name]Cedric[/name]. I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Hamilton[/name] as a middle! Agree that [name]Franklin[/name] might be too much esp w/ a [name]Winston[/name] and I remember you saying you didn’t want them to sound similar. [name]Winston[/name] and [name]Franklin[/name] are both presidential names/stodgy old men names for me. I love [name]Winston[/name] (it might be my favorite overall for boys, personally) so it’s not a negative, just remembering your thoughts from earlier…
Least fave is [name]Gwen[/name] b/c it feels incomplete.
Are your unused firsts usable as middles?
I love [name]Ramona[/name] [name]June[/name], [name]Ramona[/name] [name]Ruth[/name] (wasn’t this on the old list?)
[name]June[/name] [name]Hermione[/name]
[name]Cecilia[/name] [name]June[/name], [name]Cicely[/name] [name]Laurel[/name]
[name]Laurel[/name] [name]Ramona[/name]
[name]Ramona[/name] - Like, [name]Ramona[/name] [name]Camille[/name] does have a nice flow to it
[name]June[/name] - Like, but personally I love [name]Juniper[/name] even more
[name]Gwen[/name] - [name]Love[/name]!
[name]Charity[/name] - Sorry, but I get a “stripper name” vibe from this
[name]Cicely[/name]/[name]Cecilia[/name] - [name]Love[/name]! Much more popular than your other children’s names, though
[name]Laurel[/name] - Feels plain to me, thanks to [name]Lauren[/name] and [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Temperance[/name] - [name]Love[/name]! It goes very well with [name]Frances[/name] and [name]Winston[/name]
[name]Basil[/name] - [name]Love[/name]! I would very much like to see this name brought back
[name]Caspar[/name] - Like
[name]Grover[/name] - Strong association with the Muppet and the sound of it doesn’t really appeal to me anyway
[name]Cedric[/name] - [name]Love[/name]! Very handsome name
[name]Franklin[/name] - Besides the “ing” surname issue, it’s far too similar to [name]Frances[/name]
I adore your children’s names! [name]Winston[/name] is my absolute favorite name for a boy!
From your girl list I think the name that matches your sibset the best is [name]Ramona[/name], it stands out strongly to me from the rest of your
list. It’s distinctly feminine, but not frilly and goes very well with sister [name]Frances[/name]. I’m not sure I love any of your middle name options with it though. What about [name]Ramona[/name] [name]Jane[/name]? [name]Ramona[/name] [name]Esme[/name]?
I love so many of your boy names! [name]Basil[/name] is fantastic, honestly it never even occurred to me that it could be a name! I’m not sure that I like its flow with [name]Winston[/name] and [name]Frances[/name] though, it may be too earthy to flow well with them.
I am loving that [name]Caspar[/name] is on your list! It’s a fantastic name and it needs to start being used again. I think it would be a
perfect sibset fit! I love [name]Prosper[/name] as a middle name with clearly doesn’t flow well with [name]Caspar[/name], but what about [name]Caspar[/name] [name]Frederick[/name]? Or if you really love [name]Franklin[/name] you could put that name in the middle slot.
Am I the only one who thinks [name]Ramona[/name] is a bit close to [name]Romer[/name]?
I really like [name]Temperance[/name] actually. For some reason saying the name always reminds me of dancing with the rising and falling of the different syllables… [name]Temperance[/name] [name]Maude[/name] is nice but [name]Temperance[/name] [name]Maeve[/name] is even better Also [name]Temperance[/name] [name]June[/name]
My favourite boys name from your list is [name]Basil[/name] BUT I don’t like it pronounced [name]Bay[/name]-zil. I think [name]Baz[/name]-il sounds more masculine…[name]Basil[/name] [name]Prosper[/name] would be awesome!
I think I like [name]Ramona[/name] [name]Hermione[/name] best from your girl’s list and from your boys I like [name]Cedric[/name] [name]Hamilton[/name]. Good [name]Luck[/name]
Wow, thank you for all the responses. We have shot some names outright on the basis of these- [name]Charity[/name] after hearing ‘stripper name’ is gone, so thank you. I had to laugh. [name]June[/name] is gone because it just doesn’t have the draw which some of the others hold for us, but I’d still use it as a middle name for sure because I do love it. I prefer [name]Cicely[/name] to [name]Cecilia[/name], whilst DH prefers [name]Cecilia[/name]. I don’t think I would want a child named [name]Cecilia[/name] in all honestly, its slightly too frilly for me. So these two are erring toward being axed, as I don’t think I’d want a [name]Cicely[/name] either if it meant having a name for which [name]David[/name] preferred a different variant. (badly articulated but I hope you catch my meaning)
I agree with a pp’s comment that [name]Laurel[/name] is made blander by its similarity to [name]Laura[/name]/[name]Lauren[/name]; I have been trying to put my finger on why it wasn’t exciting me and that is probably it. So in my book that name is off the books ([name]David[/name] is obstinate on this one though)
He also thinks [name]Temperance[/name] is a little silly, but I think he’s coming round to it a bit more as time goes on. Time will tell, anyway and its still a contender for now. So basically the list is now:
[name]Ramona[/name]
[name]Gwen[/name]
and maybe:
[name]Temperance[/name]
[name]Cicely[/name]
but the latter two are less likely, its feeling like. I don’t mind [name]Ramona[/name] being similar to [name]Romer[/name], because he doesn’t go by the middle name in any quotidian sense. I love the shared sounds in both of them, clearly. I seem to go for v similar sounds in all the names I love.
For the boys, its a bit of a clean slate situation as I am so unconvinced by a lot of my list. I love a lot of grand names like [name]Perseus[/name] and [name]Oberon[/name], which are totally unusable for me. And then a lot of ‘old man’ names like [name]Basil[/name].
These three are staying:
Talking to a friend who loves the name [name]Prosper[/name]- previously only allowed onto our middle name list- he pointed out that the nickname I love for [name]Temperance[/name] ([name]Perry[/name]) would also make total sense for a [name]Prosper[/name]. So that’s been pushed more confidently onto the first name list now too. I love it the best of any of the list, far and away. I am just worried that its too grandiose. We’d certainly err toward a far less extravagant middle name choice if we used it. What do you think? Too grand, or a kind enough name to give a son?
ps. Thank you all for your diplomacy in commenting. I always post my list slightly gingerly, a little scared that I’ll be too easily offended.
Didn’t you say that you wanted a quirky name? I don’t think [name]Ramona[/name] or [name]Gwen[/name] are quirky at all.
I would lean more to the less popular Greek names like [name]Xanthe[/name] on the one hand and the cute [name]Daisy[/name] or [name]Poppy[/name] on the other hand for quirky, maybe with a [name]Harriet[/name] thrown in for good measure.
Maybe a name I haven’t heard in years (not quirky but different) may interest you and be better because it doesn’t have the moan factor like [name]Ramona[/name] and I refer to [name]Monica[/name].
One quirky name that I like as a middle name is [name]Bluebell[/name] the national flower of [name]Scotland[/name] and I think it is a very beautiful flower.
My combo [name]Imogen[/name] [name]Bluebell[/name] I love that combo!
[name]Tessa[/name] has lots of fun and personality and while not a truly quirky name it is on the quirky radar.
What about [name]Adelina[/name]? It is pretty and unusual and the nn of [name]Adele[/name] is sweet.
Now here are two quirky names [name]Lulu[/name] and [name]Lola[/name] both totally usable and have lots of personality and a huge fun factor.
Then there is [name]Tallulah[/name] she thinks outside the square her nn could even be [name]Lulu[/name] and I like her a lot.
[name]Tamar[/name] as a middle name would be a good idea and you could team her with a vintage name like [name]Cecile[/name] [name]Tamar[/name]. It looks classy.
So maybe one or so of these may tick your list of requirements.
I’m not a big fan of Prosper, paltry because I think of prosperity and then it makes me think of money. And I guess to think of it that way, it feels a bit wrong to name a child after money (except Penny!). But I did think of another virtue name that you might like - Earnest for a boy. I know Ernest has been a dopey name, but I think with the meaning behind it becomes sweet and handsome. Just a thought.
And re: offending people, you shouldn’t worry! It’s important to be honest so that everyone can help you to whittle your list and suggest other names. It’s your child that the names are for anyway.
For me [name]Ramona[/name] will always be the protagonist of the book series of that same name. Good associations, yes. But she dwells in perpetual childhood in my mind. . .
Also, I don’t care for the nn “[name]Mona[/name],” which reminds me of moaning.
[name]Gwen[/name] (well, [name]Gwendolyn[/name]) is one of my top girls’ names. [name]Love[/name] it. [name]Hope[/name] it doesn’t become too popular!
[name]Laurel[/name] seems a bit mousy to me.
[name]Cicely[/name] is nice, though it sounds like [name]Sicily[/name], [name]Italy[/name]. [name]Cecilia[/name] is pretty, but I dislike the meaning (“blind”).
[name]Charity[/name] and [name]Temperance[/name] are a bit too preachy for my taste. [name]Just[/name] not really a fan of the virtue names.
[name]June[/name]. [name]Love[/name], love love. Also in my top 5.
[name]Ramona[/name] could easily have the nn [name]Romy[/name]. I prefer [name]Ramona[/name] to [name]Gwen[/name] for the quirk factor. I also love [name]Cedric[/name] [name]Prosper[/name] as a sib to [name]Frances[/name] [name]Adelaide[/name] and [name]Winston[/name] [name]Romer[/name]!
Thank you all for the help! All the name combinations and advice has been indispensable. I am onto the last leg with my choices.
The last names standing are:
being tossed around: [name]Shirley[/name] [name]June[/name], [name]Gwen[/name] [name]Cecelia[/name]
final choice(!): [name]Cedric[/name] [name]Prosper[/name]/ [name]Cedric[/name] [name]Hamilton[/name]/ [name]Cedric[/name] [name]Tennyson[/name]
Any last comments would be great. Which combination sounds best? And what does anyone think of [name]Shirley[/name]? We haven’t shared it with anybody yet, so this is its first airing, basically…
