HELP! New name needed for an early 20-year-old girl.

I know you’re thinking this isn’t the usual type of question around here, but I MUST change my name and I feel I need expert help choosing one. After reading around the forum for ideas I’m convinced you all are the professionals at this, so please help with suggestions and feedback (Apologies for the wall of text and life story but it adds context; read the simple version if you’re only slightly interested).

The Simple Version:
Right now I’m lost between a few first names. [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] and [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] are top tier choices, but I’m also interested in [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] and [name_f]Aria[/name_f].

For middle names, I like any of the rejected first names as well as [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_f]Leah[/name_f], and the more interesting but conspicuous [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f], [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], and [name_f]Serafina[/name_f]. Obvious the combination would have to flow well.

I’m also interested in any similar names (in form or in spirit) that you all might want to see in the mix. This is your chance to name an (almost) grown adult, so have fun! [name_u]Read[/name_u] more if you’re not already bored. And thank you for feedback.

The Tantalizing Background:
I’m a transgender girl in my early twenties. I’ve known I was a girl all my life and I’m finally doing the transition to I’ve always dreamed about. I’ve been on hormones for half a year now and I’m finally starting to feel ‘at home’ in my body because of the changes. That’s inspired me to take the next step in my transition, the name change. The name I choose will go on my reissued birth certificate, drivers license, passport and social security card. More importantly, it’s obviously the name I will be using socially and at work (I’ll be an accredited lawyer in a year). I understand that it will shape the way people perceive and respond to me, which is why I need your help.

As a trans woman there are some special considerations that make this different from naming a baby. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if I like a name, I still might not be able to use it because the name isn’t passable (meaning it doesn’t raise any suspicion about me being trans).

Then there also some bonus criteria from my wish list:

[/ul]

I used the name [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] when I went to therapy and my psych would always call me by it. I picked it out when I was 16 because I really love the story of the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] martyr St. [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]. It’s actually my confirmation name. But there’s also something a little tin about it when I hear other people say it. Maybe that’s unfamiliarity, and if it had always been my name I wouldn’t feel it. Maybe it’s not. Some combinations I like are [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Mia[/name_f], Felcity [name_f]Noelle[/name_f], or [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f].

[name_u]Noel[/name_u] is a family name because it’s my grandmother’s, mother’s and sister’s middle names. I heard it a lot growing up when my sister would get yelled at, so it doesn’t have that familiarity problem. I add a twist and spell it [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] because it looks prettier and can’t be mistaken for a boys name. Possible combos: [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] [name_f]Aria[/name_f], [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f].

Edit: Here was my original list with some ridiculously unpassable names I just liked.

This is an interesting name challenge…

Your list: [name_f]Noelle[/name_f], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_f]Aria[/name_f], [name_f]Leah[/name_f], [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f], [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f].
[name_f]My[/name_f] opinion: [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t choose [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] - give yourself your own name, not one you share with so many people. [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] is a favorite of mine but it lacks for nn’s. [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] may have pronunciation issues. [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] is nice but nn [name_u]Rory[/name_u]? is not great). [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Leah[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] are ok - just nms.

  • a name with a cool story or history

Final advice: [name_f]Do[/name_f] not pick a name with pronunciation issues; it will drive you crazy. Good luck!

So many good ones on that list! Like [name_f]Callista[/name_f]/[name_f]Callie[/name_f], [name_f]Maia[/name_f], and especially [name_f]Nora[/name_f] (which keeps popping up at me recently).
I agree, Il ove [name_f]Ava[/name_f] too, but it’s a bit too ‘right now.’ On the other hand, I’d be about 20 years older than most [name_f]Ava[/name_f]'s so maybe it wouldn’t matter?

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite of your choices is [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]

I was born a few years after you, but these are some names that fit into your style that I’ve heard on my classmates;

[name_u]Lexie[/name_u]/[name_u]Alexis[/name_u]
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]
[name_f]Jenna[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Evelina[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Ella[/name_f]
[name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_u]Nicola[/name_u]
[name_f]Holly[/name_f]

[name_u]Lexi[/name_u]! I think I’ve been overlooking that one. Although there’s another famous transgender woman named [name_u]Alexis[/name_u], who I don’t want to be associated with :frowning: [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is so pretty, and I wish I could, but for some reason I just can’t see myself in it. Also, one issue is that I already am friends with a few girls with those names, so it would be really awkward to change my name to the same as theirs, no?

Perhaps, and, rather than [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] for [name_u]Lexi[/name_u], you could go for [name_f]Alexia[/name_f], [name_f]Alexa[/name_f], [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f], [name_f]Alexina[/name_f], or hey, even just [name_u]Lexi[/name_u]. I know quite a few girls around our age bracket (1990s) named [name_u]Alexis[/name_u], and two who are just [name_u]Lexi[/name_u]/[name_u]Lexie[/name_u].

I put this list together aiming for a name starting with A, short or readily shortened with a nickname, solidly feminine, and in use in the early nineties. I’ve noted virtue and Italian names. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite for you is [name_f]Allegra[/name_f] because it checks all the boxes, plus it has a shared meaning with [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]! I left [name_f]Aria[/name_f] and [name_f]Ava[/name_f] off the list because these names are recently popular, so they could be conspicuous on a twenty-something. I wish you the best of luck in finding “the one”…

[name_f]Abigail[/name_f]
[name_u]Abbey[/name_u]/[name_u]Abbie[/name_u]/[name_u]Abby[/name_u] (nn)
[name_f]Aimee[/name_f]
[name_f]Allegra[/name_f]- virtue name, Italian.
[name_f]Alanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Alessandra[/name_f]- Italian.
[name_f]Alessia[/name_f]- Italian.
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_u]Allie[/name_u]/[name_f]Ally[/name_f] (nn)
[name_f]Alyssa[/name_f]
[name_f]Amber[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Amity[/name_f]- virtue name. (might be too unusual)
[name_f]Amy[/name_f] (nn)
[name_f]Angela[/name_f]
[name_f]Angelina[/name_f]- Italian
[name_u]Angie[/name_u] (nn)
[name_f]Anna[/name_f]
[name_f]Anne[/name_f]
[name_f]Annabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Anneliese[/name_f]
[name_f]Annie[/name_f] (nn)
[name_f]Anya[/name_f]
[name_f]April[/name_f]
[name_m]Aubra[/name_m]
[name_u]Aubrey[/name_u]
[name_f]Audra[/name_f]
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f]
Autumn
[name_f]Aviva[/name_f]- (kind of) virtue name.
[name_f]Avril[/name_f]

Edit: I left Alexis/Alexandra/Alexandria off because I though you might not like the gender ambiguity of Alex. But it’s true you could use Ally or Lexi. I did include the Italian versions Alessia and Alessandra.

I would love to choose [name_f]Alessandra[/name_f], but my sister had to go off and marry man named [name_m]Alessandro[/name_m]. No joke, stole the name right out from under me. It’s hard because, unlike for a baby, a lot of these names I associate with people I already know–so I can’t be unbiased about it.
[name_f]Allegra[/name_f] is definitely climbing onto my short list though!
And, I know it wasn’t on the list for me, but I saw you had [name_f]Talia[/name_f] in your signature. Another poster suggested [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], which got me looking at Greek muses. I found and REALLY like [name_f]Thalia[/name_f]–it’s got meaning, fairly Latinate, decidedly feminine, stands out while fitting in, peaked in 1993. I’ll put that in consideration too. Thanks so much!

Of your combos, I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] [name_f]Aria[/name_f]. It’s absolutely beautiful!

I really like the suggestion of [name_f]Allegra[/name_f].

You might like:
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_u]Artemis[/name_u] (maybe too ‘out there’?)
[name_f]Lana[/name_f]
[name_f]Amber[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f]

Good luck finding the perfect name!

[name_f]Ariella[/name_f]

[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
[name_f]Camille[/name_f]

[name_f]Carina[/name_f]/[name_f]Karina[/name_f]
[name_f]Katrin[/name_f]
[name_f]Celia[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f]
[name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f]
[name_f]Gabriella[/name_f]
[name_f]Thea[/name_f]
[name_f]Gianna[/name_f] ([name_f]Gia[/name_f])
[name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Aviva[/name_f]
[name_f]Arabelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Cara[/name_f]
[name_f]Constance[/name_f]
[name_f]Temperance[/name_f]
[name_f]Hope[/name_f]
[name_f]Faith[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliana[/name_f]
[name_f]Leora[/name_f]/Lioraa
[name_f]Eleora[/name_f]/[name_f]Leora[/name_f]
[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]
[name_f]Athena[/name_f]
[name_f]Mariel[/name_f]

I actually think [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] would be a great first name – sweet, professional, uncommon, obviously feminine, nice nickname options.

In one of your responses you said you like [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] as well, and this is another GREAT choice in my opinion, for the same reasons I like [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]. I know a few Thalias, it’s a good pick.

Wow, hard to find a name in your list that I don’t like. For me [name_f]Gia[/name_f], [name_f]Ariella[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] and [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] were strong choices. Thanks!

I think [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] is great. It still keeps [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] in there, which you’ve gone by and so it should be more familiar to you (saying that, you did say it had unfamiliarity for you…). Although [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] doesn’t have any good nicknames, it’s great by itself and is quirky enough to be seen on anyone of any age - it’s not grouped to a certain generation so to say.

I also second (or thrice, not sure who else has suggested it) [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]. I love this!
