Help... pregnant with a girl and we can't pick a name!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all,

I’m about 6 months along with a baby girl (due mid [name_f]May[/name_f]), and DH and I are struggling to decide on a name for her. We already have a son, [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_u]Alton[/name_u], who we call [name_u]Jamie[/name_u]. He’s about to be 2. Looking for something that fits well with his name, as well as goes with our naming style and last name (longer, 4 syllables, starts with an S).

When my son was born, our top choice for a girl was [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] but we’ve been really turned off on that since [name_u]Jamie[/name_u] was born. Off the top of my head, I can think of 6 little [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]/[name_f]Sophia[/name_f]'s from around our community so that’s really not an option anymore as far as we’re concerned. More and more I’m thinking about using it as a middle name, instead?

DH and I tend to like classic names that can be shortened into a nickname. We want to have at least one more child, and if it’s a boy his name will be [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Sam[/name_u]). But we’re really stuck on narrowing down our girls’ name choices. Here’s my short list:

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] ([name_u]Ali[/name_u])
[name_f]Annika[/name_f] ([name_f]Anna[/name_f] or [name_f]Annie[/name_f])
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] ([name_f]Cara[/name_f])
[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] ([name_f]Bella[/name_f] or [name_u]Izzy[/name_u])
[name_f]Zoey[/name_f] (DH’s fave)
[name_f]Libby[/name_f] (Like it as a nickname… what could the given name be?)
[name_f]Winnie[/name_f] (Like it as a nickname, but not fond of [name_f]Winifred[/name_f], [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f], etc)
[name_f]Mia[/name_f] (But not fond of [name_f]Amelia[/name_f])

Any suggestions in a similar style? Middle name suggestions? Realistically I know we still have months to make a decision, but I’m feeling anxious about not having a solid idea yet. Boys’ names just come easier to us. Help!

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] are both adorable!

I like [name_f]Alice[/name_f] or [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] with her brother, so she’ll have a “formal” name but a cute nickname that ends in the “ee” sounds as well!

I like [name_f]Alice[/name_f] (although I prefer [name_f]Alice[/name_f] as is, rather than [name_u]Ali[/name_u]), [name_f]Zoey[/name_f], and [name_f]Annika[/name_f] ([name_f]Annie[/name_f]) from your list. I think [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Annie[/name_f]) would also work well.

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] ([name_u]Ali[/name_u])-- Nice classic name. Nothing against it, just not my favorite.

[name_f]Annika[/name_f] ([name_f]Anna[/name_f] or [name_f]Annie[/name_f])-- [name_u]Love[/name_u] this name and the nicknames. I never hear it in the U.S. where I live. This is my favorite of your names

[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] ([name_f]Cara[/name_f])-- Another nice, classic name. Again, nothing against it, but it seems a bit dated where I live. I love the name [name_f]Cara[/name_f] by itself, though.

[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] ([name_f]Bella[/name_f] or [name_u]Izzy[/name_u])–I do quite like the name [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], it was a consideration for a middle name until we discovered our new baby would be a boy. But I’m not the biggest fan of the nick-names (or any nickname for it really, which is why it was in the middle position). The one downside to using [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] is that there are a lot of different spellings so your child will probably have to specify the spelling a lot.

[name_f]Zoey[/name_f] (DH’s fave)–Cute name, seems very modern to me.

[name_f]Libby[/name_f] (Like it as a nickname… what could the given name be?) Cute nickname. I think it is typically a nickname for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], but I’ve also met a little girl named [name_f]Liberty[/name_f] who used this nickname too. Other possibilities: [name_f]Libra[/name_f], Lillibeth, [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f]. You know, you could probably even pull off [name_f]Libby[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]. Wow, you found a nickname I like that I hadn’t even considered! I’m liking the combination of [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]/[name_f]Libby[/name_f], this is right up there with [name_f]Annika[/name_f] as my favorite suggestion for you.

[name_f]Winnie[/name_f] (Like it as a nickname, but not fond of [name_f]Winifred[/name_f], [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f], etc)-- Not my favorite name.

[name_f]Mia[/name_f] (But not fond of [name_f]Amelia[/name_f])–I recommend against this name/nick-name in general. It is a slang term for Bulimia. There’s a subculture out there that tries to make Anorexia and Bulimia glamorous, so they try to soften the terms by using the nicknames [name_f]Ana[/name_f] and [name_f]Mia[/name_f].

My favorite from your list is [name_f]Annika[/name_f]. While I like [name_f]Annie[/name_f]/[name_f]Anna[/name_f], I prefer [name_f]Anya[/name_f] as I pronounce [name_f]Annika[/name_f] Ahn-nik-ka.

I like [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Libby[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f].

Some other ideas:

[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] nn [name_f]Libby[/name_f]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Liddie[/name_f] or [name_f]Dia[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] nn [name_f]Emmy[/name_f], [name_f]Mimi[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f]
[name_f]Catherine[/name_f] nn [name_f]Cat[/name_f], [name_f]Catie[/name_f]
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] nn [name_f]Rosie[/name_f]
[name_f]Megan[/name_f] nn [name_f]Meg[/name_f], [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]

Some middle ideas

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] ‘[name_f]Libby[/name_f]’ [name_f]Cadence[/name_f]
[name_f]Libby[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Libby[/name_f] [name_u]Adair[/name_u]
[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f]
[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Maren[/name_f]
[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f]
[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Corinne[/name_f]
[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]?

Or [name_f]Winslet[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]? That pairs well with [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_u]Alton[/name_u] imo.

[name_f]Wendy[/name_f] would be sweet, too! I quite like [name_f]Wendy[/name_f] [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] and I still think you could call her [name_f]Winnie[/name_f].

I love:

I love [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Zoey[/name_f] and [name_f]Mia[/name_f]!

[name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_f]Tess[/name_f]
[name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_f]Claire[/name_f]

I really like [name_f]Alice[/name_f] both with your chosen middles and with the boy names. It is a familiar classic that is not overused and that seems to be what you’re going for. I like [name_f]Zoey[/name_f] too, but it has a completely different vibe and I’m not sure I’d use it with [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] as a middle. I know a good number of Carolines and Isabelles, so if popularity is a concern, those could be problematic.

I like [name_f]Libby[/name_f] and [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] the most

I like [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Zoey[/name_f] with [name_u]James[/name_u] the best.

[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] is as popular as [name_f]Sophia[/name_f].

I like [name_f]Annie[/name_f] with [name_u]James[/name_u]. Could just use [name_f]Anne[/name_f] or [name_f]Anna[/name_f]?

I prefer [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] ([name_f]Cora[/name_f]) to [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. I find [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] a little dated.

I like [name_f]Mia[/name_f] on its own. I can’t think of a nice long name.

I really like [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]. [name_u]Winter[/name_u] or [name_f]Winona[/name_f] are full names I would use

[name_f]Arabella[/name_f] ([name_f]Bella[/name_f])
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] ( [name_f]Lizzy[/name_f]/ [name_f]Libby[/name_f]/ [name_f]Ellie[/name_f])
[name_f]Lilibet[/name_f] ([name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Libby[/name_f])
[name_f]Freya[/name_f] ([name_f]Fay[/name_f])
[name_f]Maribel[/name_f] ([name_f]Bel[/name_f])
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]/ [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] ([name_f]Rosie[/name_f])
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] ([name_u]Penny[/name_u])
[name_u]Piper[/name_u] ([name_m]Pip[/name_m])
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] ([name_f]Tilly[/name_f])
[name_f]Willow[/name_f] ([name_f]Willa[/name_f])

[name_m]Just[/name_m] my two cents’ worth: [name_u]James[/name_u] nn [name_u]Jamie[/name_u] is awesome [name_f]IMO[/name_f] & [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] nn [name_u]Sam[/name_u] goes quite well. [name_u]James[/name_u] & [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] are both pretty classic names, so I would choose a classic girl’s name w/nn possibilities. That (again just my opinion) leaves [name_f]Zoey[/name_f] out. Of your other options, [name_f]Alice[/name_f] & [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] match [name_u]James[/name_u] & [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] the best, & [name_u]Jamie[/name_u], [name_u]Ali[/name_u] or [name_f]Cara[/name_f], & [name_u]Sam[/name_u] work just as well. [name_f]Annika[/name_f] is very sweet & could work as well. [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] has been hugely popular for quite a while; I don’t know if that’s a concern for you. Another nn option for [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] is [name_u]Isa[/name_u]…I pronounce it as EYE-sah, although it seems that the standard pronunciation is EE-sa. Good luck!

My favorites with James from your list are Alice or Caroline (I like Carrie better as a nn though).

For Annie, I like Anne, Anna, or Annabel better with James. Isabelle is fine, but it’s pretty similar to Sophia in popularity. I’d use Elizabeth nn Libby and a longer name for Winnie-- what about Edwina? Mia can be a nn for many fns-- Marina, Maria, Miranda, Miriam, etc.

Some other possibilities:

James/Jamie and

Agatha (Aggie)
Audrey (Audie)
Augusta (Gussie)
Beatrice/Beatrix (Bea, Tris, Trixie)
Bettina (Betty or maybe Libby?)
Dorothy/Dorothea (Dora, Dot, Dottie, Thea)

I know a [name_f]Libby[/name_f] whose given name is [name_f]Liberty[/name_f], mn [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. [name_f]Liberty[/name_f] [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] sounds cute!

What about…

[name_f]Lisette[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lettie[/name_f]
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] nn [name_f]Libby[/name_f]/[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]/[name_f]Betty[/name_f]

[name_f]Madeline[/name_f] nn [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] nn [name_f]Ginny[/name_f]/[name_f]Vivi[/name_f]
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] nn [name_f]Vicky[/name_f]/[name_f]Tori[/name_f]

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] - beautiful classic
[name_f]Annika[/name_f] - [name_f]Lovely[/name_f], and [name_f]Pippi[/name_f] Longstockings is a very nice namesake for a little girl!
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - I’m not able to love that name since I watched that creepy [name_m]Tim[/name_m] [name_m]Burton[/name_m] movie as a kid…
[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] - quite nice
[name_f]Zoey[/name_f] - I hate that name so much! It has that same bitchy vibe to me like [name_f]Kylie[/name_f] and [name_f]Chloe[/name_f].
[name_f]Libby[/name_f] - [name_f]Libra[/name_f], [name_f]Liba[/name_f], [name_f]Liberty[/name_f], Liberia, Libena, Libitina and Libuše is all I could find
[name_f]Winnie[/name_f] - I love [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]!
[name_f]Mia[/name_f] - I don’t like [name_f]Mia[/name_f], it seems very mainstream and plain to me.

Other options:

I really like [name_f]Alice[/name_f].
[name_f]Libby[/name_f] is a great nickname and I would use [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] as the given name.
[name_f]Zoey[/name_f] is nice too and I like [name_u]Caro[/name_u] as a nickname for [name_f]Caroline[/name_f].

My favorite for you is [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] nn [name_f]Libby[/name_f]. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is pretty popular, but I think it’s similar to [name_u]James[/name_u] in that you are using a less used nickname. Second choice would be the suggestion of [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Liddie[/name_f].

I also like:

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] (but not [name_u]Ali[/name_u] since I know a ton of [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]/[name_u]Allison[/name_u] Allies my age)
[name_f]Isabel[/name_f] (but agree it is almost as popular as [name_f]Sophia[/name_f])
[name_f]Winnie[/name_f] (I like [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f], but maybe you would like [name_u]Winter[/name_u]?)

Other ideas:

[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] or [name_f]Margot[/name_f] nn [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] nn [name_f]Nellie[/name_f] or [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]
[name_f]Susanna[/name_f] nn [name_f]Suki[/name_f]
[name_u]Marian[/name_u] nn [name_f]Molly[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] nn [name_u]Rory[/name_u]
