My husband and I are having a hard time choosing names for our twin girls that will be here in two weeks! We have an older daughter named [name_u]Channing[/name_u]. We like surnames, boyish names, and names that are not too popular. I am a teacher so there are so many names that won’t work for me because I associate them with students from the past. That makes me favor more unusual names that I haven’t heard much before.
We have kind of narrowed our names down to [name_u]Quincy[/name_u] [name_m]Crew[/name_m] and Shafer [name_u]Sloane[/name_u]. I like that both are uncommon and have the possibility of cute nicknames ([name_u]Quinn[/name_u] and [name_u]Shae[/name_u]), but when we tell people they always say the same thing… “Hmmm… I like [name_u]Quincy[/name_u]!” I am afraid that Shafer is too out there for people.
What do you all think?
Here are some other names from our list:
[name_u]Finley[/name_u] (more popular than I like, but I love this name)
[name_u]Sloane[/name_u]
[name_m]Beckett[/name_m]
[name_u]Marlowe[/name_u]
Neeley
[name_f]Harlow[/name_f]
[name_f]Bronte[/name_f]
[name_u]Luca[/name_u]
[name_m]Harmon[/name_m]
[name_u]Fifer[/name_u]
[name_m]Ramsey[/name_m] (my favorite but husband doesn’t like it)
[name_m]Baker[/name_m]
[name_u]Murphy[/name_u]
[name_m]Pierce[/name_m]
Does anyone have suggestions along that go with these names? What names do you like or not like from this list? Please help me with some good, honest opinions!
I think Shafer doesn’t have much appeal because it reminds people of two words: chafing (which is unpleasant to deal with) and shaver (which is just sort of odd to hear as a first name).
For girls I would use:
[name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] (although I love this more on a boy; I love the meaning “driftwood”)
[name_f]Harlow[/name_f] (this means “army”)
[name_u]Fifer[/name_u] (super cute alternative to [name_u]Piper[/name_u])
[name_u]Sloane[/name_u] ([name_m]Ferris[/name_m] [name_m]Bueller[/name_m] made this work on a girl)
[name_u]Finley[/name_u] (Not bad. A little boring but not terrible)
[name_u]Quincy[/name_u] (I love this)
Names I wouldn’t use on a girl, but would use for a boy:
[name_m]Beckett[/name_m] (I know two male Becketts)
[name_u]Luca[/name_u] (My dance teacher had a son named [name_u]Luca[/name_u])
[name_m]Ramsey[/name_m] (still this one is iffy because of [name_m]Gordon[/name_m] [name_m]Ramsay[/name_m])
[name_u]Murphy[/name_u] (very cute tbh but it does sort of sound like morphine)
[name_m]Pierce[/name_m] (super strong- maybe a bit too bold and harsh)
Names I wouldn’t recommend using at all (at least in the FN spot):
Neeley (I really do not think that a name that sounds like “kneeling” is a good thing to bestow on a kid, girl or boy.)
[name_f]Bronte[/name_f] (I think of the Olympic swimmer, but even that association doesn’t make me think [name_f]Bronte[/name_f] is a nice name.)
[name_m]Baker[/name_m] (Wake and bake? Whoever is named [name_m]Baker[/name_m] will get a ton of weed puns with their name, trust me. Also it’s sort of a flat meaning to give your child)
[name_m]Harmon[/name_m] (sounds like the word “harming” and “harmful”)
Here are some extra surname suggestions:
[name_u]Keaton[/name_u]
[name_m]Stellan[/name_m]
[name_u]Leith[/name_u]
[name_m]Nairn[/name_m]
My reaction is the same, [name_u]Quincy[/name_u] is nice but not a fan of Shafer. From your list I like [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] best followed by [name_f]Harlow[/name_f].
I have to say I also cannot appreciate Shafer as a name, it just brings to mind too many negative or strange connotations. Our naming style could not be more different, but I can still appreciate [name_u]Channing[/name_u] and [name_u]Quincy[/name_u] as names. For me, Shafer is a no, but [name_u]Quincy[/name_u] [name_m]Crew[/name_m] is sweet, unusual and works well with [name_u]Channing[/name_u].
From your list, my thoughts are:
[name_u]Finley[/name_u]-Not really a fan. Honestly doesn’t strike me as a unisex name, it’s very strictly male in my head and all the Finleys I know of are male, which could be hard for a girl child to deal with potentially.
[name_u]Sloane[/name_u]-I don’t hate [name_u]Sloane[/name_u], I think it would make a pretty middle name. It definitely fits better for me with the preppy, unusual, unisex style of your other girls’ names.
[name_m]Beckett[/name_m]-I can’t decide if I like it or not, but it’s not awful.
[name_u]Marlowe[/name_u]-I like this. I think it works well with the other names, and the literary heritage it bears gives it the same preppy vibe as [name_u]Quincy[/name_u].
Neeley-No, sorry. I really don’t like this.
[name_f]Harlow[/name_f]-Where I live, [name_f]Harlow[/name_f] is a quite rundown town, so negative associations push this out for me.
[name_f]Bronte[/name_f]-I really like this! Similar to [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u], the literary heritage grounds it a bit, meaning that it’s easily recognisable even though it’s still a very unusual name. Only qualm is the similar sounding ending to [name_u]Quincy[/name_u], though it’s not too bad.
[name_u]Luca[/name_u]-Too masculine to be unisex for me!
[name_m]Harmon[/name_m]-Not a fan, just sounds a little clunky.
[name_u]Fifer[/name_u]-Not too bad, though stylewise I don’t think it’s a great match for [name_u]Quincy[/name_u]. I much prefer the slightly more traditional [name_u]Piper[/name_u].
[name_m]Ramsey[/name_m]-For me the exact same ending as [name_u]Quincy[/name_u] would be a turn-off, as it makes the twin names sound too matchy matchy for my liking.
[name_m]Baker[/name_m]-No, it’s too much of a surname for me.
[name_u]Murphy[/name_u]-I could see this as a middle name, but as a first name it just makes me think of old men.
[name_m]Pierce[/name_m]-Too masculine for me!
Sorry if I’ve been a bit negative, but I want to give you my honest feedback!
My favourite options for you are [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] and [name_f]Bronte[/name_f] [name_m]Beckett[/name_m]. [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] is a cool, unique unisex combo, with a fun preppy vibe and a bit more grounding through the literary heritage of [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u]. [name_f]Bronte[/name_f] [name_m]Beckett[/name_m] is fun, and I like that you would get the same repeated consonant effect that you do with [name_u]Quincy[/name_u] [name_m]Crew[/name_m]; it ties the names together in a subtle and cool way.
A lot of these I have trouble hearing as first names, e.g. [name_f]Bronte[/name_f] and [name_m]Baker[/name_m], but could be where I’m from regionally. My favorites are [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] and [name_u]Finley[/name_u] (I know a girl [name_u]Finley[/name_u]). Personally not a fan of [name_f]Harlow[/name_f] because it sounds too much like harlot, and [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] because it is too associated with [name_m]Ferris[/name_m] Beuler for me. I think [name_u]Quincy[/name_u] is pretty cute, though I like [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] better as the full name.
Other ideas, but these may be too popular for you:
[name_u]Reese[/name_u]
[name_u]Delaney[/name_u]
[name_u]Linden[/name_u]
[name_f]Greer[/name_f]
[name_u]Merritt[/name_u]
[name_u]Ainsley[/name_u]
[name_u]Adair[/name_u]
[name_u]Marion[/name_u]
[name_u]Wynn[/name_u]
This is a hard one for me, because I detest boys names on girls. I love [name_u]Quincy[/name_u] on a boy. From your list, the ones I dislike the least are [name_u]Sloane[/name_u], [name_f]Bronte[/name_f], [name_u]Neely[/name_u], and Quuncy. Here are some less frilly names I like a bit better:
Your naming style is far from mine! lol but I do like [name_u]Quinn[/name_u].
Trying to consider the combo from your perspective I think Shafer is your style and goes well, and shae is a cute nn, but it would be sad for her if everyone makes it obvious they prefer Quinns name and continue to side eye her name as she gets older.
Considering your other picks…
[name_u]Finley[/name_u] and [name_u]Quincy[/name_u]? [name_u]Finn[/name_u] and [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] might be too matchy and get confusing
I also don’t think Neeley, [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u], [name_f]Bronte[/name_f], [name_u]Luca[/name_u], [name_u]Murphy[/name_u], [name_m]Pierce[/name_m] or [name_m]Harmon[/name_m] work.
I agree with your husband, no go on [name_m]Ramsay[/name_m], it’s got the bad rep with the GoT villain that will take a while to shake and she might not appreciate the connection as she gets older.
[name_m]Baker[/name_m] as a girl’s first name might be asking for a wave of sexist jokes but idk maybe I’m overly cautious.
[name_u]Sloane[/name_u] actually sounds good with your sibset I feel.
Although [name_m]Beckett[/name_m]'s not my style, if you like becky as a nn it could definitely fit.
[name_u]Fifer[/name_u] is close-ish to Shafer, yet sounds close to likable piper, so maybe it’s something people will be more receptive to.
[name_f]Harlow[/name_f] feels different than [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] despite sounding so similar and I think it could work.
Overall My Vote Is Definitely for [name_u]Sloane[/name_u]
To be completely honest you have a dream situation…you get to name 2 baby girls at once! If it were me I would definitely rethink your list. It sounds like getting equally likeavke names is important to you and right now they don’t feel balanced, right? And I’m sure being a teacher does make this so much harder!
I like [name_u]Quinn[/name_u], [name_f]Harlow[/name_f], [name_u]Sloan[/name_u] and [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u]
If you tend to go for more unisex or surnames I like:
[name_u]Reese[/name_u]
[name_u]Arden[/name_u]
[name_u]Harper[/name_u]
[name_u]Piper[/name_u]
[name_f]Grier[/name_f]
[name_u]Hadley[/name_u]
I have to agree on the name Shafer, its not a bad name its just not as pretty as [name_u]Quincy[/name_u] to me. Out of the other names on your list I Like [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] and [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] and I like the name [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] [name_u]Shae[/name_u] that someone suggested.
What do you think of these names?
[name_f]Winslet[/name_f]
[name_f]Sidonie[/name_f]
[name_u]Sailor[/name_u]
[name_u]Cairo[/name_u]
[name_u]Kennedy[/name_u]
[name_u]Raleigh[/name_u]
[name_u]Wylie[/name_u]
[name_u]Albany[/name_u]
[name_u]Langley[/name_u]
[name_u]McKinley[/name_u]
[name_u]Parker[/name_u]
[name_u]Nouvel[/name_u]
[name_m]Finnigan[/name_m]
[name_u]Kiernan[/name_u]
[name_u]Lennox[/name_u]
My personal favourite is [name_u]Quincy[/name_u] and [name_f]Winslet[/name_f]!
I love the suggestion of [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u] for Shafer. A few other good suggestions were [name_u]Oakley[/name_u] and [name_u]Lennon[/name_u] (this one is on my list!). From your list I like [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] and [name_f]Harlow[/name_f] the best. They have a bit more feminity than the others. But go with your gut! If you like the name, others will warm up to it. None of your options are too out there to where they are unusable.
Favorites are [name_u]Finley[/name_u] and [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] (I also do think [name_f]Harlow[/name_f] and [name_m]Pierce[/name_m] are pretty cool)
I think [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] and [name_u]Quincy[/name_u] are great, [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] [name_u]Finley[/name_u] would make a great combination! (I would put [name_u]Finley[/name_u] as the first name, but I think [name_u]Finley[/name_u] and [name_u]Quincy[/name_u] might sound a bit matchy, it’s not terrible like [name_u]Hadley[/name_u] and [name_f]Hailey[/name_f], but I think [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] and [name_u]Quincy[/name_u] sound best and look best together ) [name_f]Harlow[/name_f] [name_m]Pierce[/name_m] would also make a cool combination and I would totally put [name_f]Harlow[/name_f] and [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] together
Here are some less common unisex names
[name_m]Wyatt[/name_m]
[name_u]Fallon[/name_u]
[name_u]Aiden[/name_u]
[name_u]River[/name_u]
(These two names are far more popular for boys than girls and I prefer both for girls)
[name_u]Sawyer[/name_u]
[name_m]Arrow[/name_m]
Brave
[name_u]Dakota[/name_u]
[name_u]Denver[/name_u]
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] (Another one that is far more common on boys and I prefer it for a girl also)
[name_u]Remington[/name_u]
[name_m]Fisher[/name_m]
[name_u]Ridley[/name_u]
[name_u]Rylan[/name_u]
[name_u]Indigo[/name_u] (a great way to get [name_f]Indie[/name_f] as a nn, which I adore)
[name_u]Kai[/name_u]
[name_u]Nico[/name_u]
I hope this helps! And congrats on your twin girls Best Wishes
