We’re due to have our first baby in [name_f]May[/name_f] and really struggling to choose a name for her. We have a few we like but can’t narrow it down so maybe the names aren’t 100% right.
Would love your opinions and/or any suggestions you might have for similar names. Others we liked but can’t use are [name_f]Freya[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] and [name_f]Cora[/name_f].
Middle name will probably be [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] or [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] (not considering either for a first name), we seem to be drawn to ‘cute’ names and don’t mind popularity if it’s a name we love.
Congratulations! [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], [name_f]Esme[/name_f] and [name_f]Clara[/name_f] are all lovely but my favourite is [name_f]Esme[/name_f]. For me it’s become a ‘modern classic.’ It looks gorgeous written down (one of those names I can easily imagine in cursive), sounds beautiful, and suits all ages - sweet on a little one but elegant on a lady. [name_f]Clara[/name_f] is lovely but has a more buttoned-up, formal, regency feel to me, whereas [name_f]Esme[/name_f] is more down to earth in a soft yet strong and heartrendingly beautiful way. [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] I feel is super cute on a little one but harder to wear on an adult, however there will be lots of them around in future. Both [name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] and [name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] are lovely, but I’d love [name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_m]Valentine[/name_m] even more (apt today).
First choice - [name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]
Second choice - [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
I like a lot of your suggestions particularly [name_f]Libby[/name_f] and [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], beautiful names. [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] and [name_f]Etta[/name_f] were two we liked but they don’t go with our surname unfortunately. Some lovely ideas!
Thank you! So many beauties in your suggestions, I’m really liking [name_f]Maisie[/name_f], [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] and [name_f]Elodie[/name_f]!
Thank you! You’ve summed up a lot of my thoughts towards the names, I too feel like [name_f]Clara[/name_f] is more formal especially compared to [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]. [name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_m]Valentine[/name_m] is a really sweet suggestion, thanks!
[name_f]My[/name_f] personal pick would be [name_f]Ruby[/name_f] [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]. It’s spunky but classic and charming all at the same time.
Second pick would be [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] (although I prefer the [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] spelling). Doesn’t have the spice of the first pick but is still classic.
A few more first name options (I’ll pair them with a random middle of yours but feel free to use the other, of course!)
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] nn “Emi” “Lia” or even “Milli”
[name_f]Rosella[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] nn “Rose” or “Ella” or even “Zelli”
[name_f]Sasha[/name_f] [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f] [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]
[name_f]Flora[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
[name_f]Calla[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
[name_f]Fern[/name_f] [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]
[name_f]My[/name_f] favorites from your list are [name_f]Ruby[/name_f], [name_f]Esme[/name_f], and [name_f]Lila[/name_f], though I love all of them.
I agree with everyone who’s suggested [name_f]Clara[/name_f] Juliet!! It sounds very sleek, elegant, princessy, and refined. Honestly though, any of your first names would sound lovely with [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]. I’m not the biggest fan of the name [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] though.
I also think [name_f]Ruby[/name_f] [name_f]Esme[/name_f] could be quite nice, if you’re open to combining those two names.
I love your list! They all feel very timeless, but not stuffy/frumpy.
Playing with some combos:
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
[name_f]Ruby[/name_f] [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]
[name_f]Lila[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
[name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourites would be [name_f]Lila[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] & [name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]!
Esme - sophisticated while also being unique and playful
Clara - a more upright, bookish name, very pretty, possibly a little too popular (or a big spike 7 years ago)
Lila - another very pretty name, in keeping with the L trend (maybe too much so?), elegant if a little passive than your others - though can see it in a happy and outgoing person
Ruby - a fun, cheeky, Hollywood glam/ showbiz name, very much a powerful entrance - ties third with Lila
Poppy - know a couple and now they’re in their teens, the name first quite work as well as did on a child, hence least fave, prefer as a nickname for Josephine or Penelope etc
All names go with both the middle options except I wouldn’t use Valentina with Ruby (too thematic/romantic) and I prefer Juliet also with Lila and Clara.
Other names you might like:
Phoebe
Lara (an alternative to Clara and Lila)
Mary (an underused gem) - could nn Maisie or Molly
Margot nn Maisie, Maggie, Peggy or Meg or just use a nn - I know people called all these, with my current fave being Peggy
Ivy
Inès
Valerie
Bryony
Pippa
Flora
Chloe
Hazel
Cleo
Dahlia
Rose
Bronte
Tessa
Camille
Piper
Willa
Daphne
[name_f]My[/name_f] two favorites would be [name_f]Ruby[/name_f] [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] and [name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]! They’re so sweet and romantic!
I like [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], [name_f]Lila[/name_f] (when pronounced lee-luh), [name_f]Esme[/name_f] and [name_f]Clara[/name_f] (either as clar-uh or clair-uh)
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite is [name_f]Esme[/name_f]
I like [name_f]Ruby[/name_f] the best on your list but they’re all great names.

[name_f]Jenny[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]May[/name_f]
[name_f]Celia[/name_f]
I immediately thought of [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] when I read your post. Normally [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] is not a name I would pick, but it just seem to jump into my memory. Good luck in choosing the name.
Thank you! Those combinations are our favourites too.
Out of your suggestions I really like [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Willow[/name_f]. I do wish we could use [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] but it clashes with our surname
