Help us come up with name combos that fit our surname

I’ve finally reached the end of trimester 1 with my first IVF pregnancy, and I don’t know what I’m having yet. I have a little bit of a list going on already but I wanted to explore more options.

[name_f]My[/name_f] surname is Dvorkin , it’s pronounced D Vorkin.

[name_f]My[/name_f] partner has a little boy from a previous relationship called [name_u]Henry[/name_u], and with my partner being one of many siblings our child is going to have loads of cousins, so we need a stand-out name.

I especially love [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m], and also [name_u]Willow[/name_u], don’t know that I’d be brave enough to use these as first names, but I love them as middles. I also toyed with [name_m]Hemlock[/name_m] to compliment his existing [name_u]Henry[/name_u], but it may be a bit of a wild card. I’ve always loved Hindley that exists in Wuthering Heights but think it still has too much association with the famous murders here in the UK, but maybe it could pass as a middle name.

We’d love to see any combo’s you can come up with. We’re happy to use one or two middle names, including [name_u]John[/name_u] to honour a loved one who passed away.

There are loads of names I love! I just don’t know if they go well with my surname. I especially love: [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m], [name_f]Hadleigh[/name_f], [name_m]Ayrton[/name_m], [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], [name_u]Spencer[/name_u], [name_u]Jude[/name_u], [name_m]Joel[/name_m], [name_m]Faramond[/name_m] & [name_m]Benedict[/name_m]

Some of his favourite names are: [name_m]Edgar[/name_m], [name_u]Sinclair[/name_u], [name_u]Jasper[/name_u], [name_u]George[/name_u], [name_m]Marcus[/name_m] & [name_u]William[/name_u]

Congratulations! It is so heartening to hear of people growing their families. I love the idea of honouring your loved ones by naming your child [name_u]John[/name_u]. I fancy that naming a child after a loved one keeps the qualities of this person that you admire close to them so the child develops these when growing up. I doubt you made sense of that lol but you get my gist. So I definitely think that [name_u]John[/name_u] as your child’s first or middle name, (or maybe paying homage to it) is a very beautiful idea.

Out of the names you said you loved, I favoured [name_m]Hemlock[/name_m], [name_m]Faramond[/name_m] and [name_m]Benedict[/name_m].

This is why I think they work best:

I like [name_m]Hemlock[/name_m] because it is a very poetic, mysterious name. It’s associated with it’s poisonous qualities the plant has an infamous reputation. However the hemlock tree/shrubby thing looks like the perfect spot to burrow under on a summer’s day. [name_m]Socrates[/name_m] was said to have been poisoned by hemlock (according to Plato), poor guy. And I mean, [name_m]Hemlock[/name_m] Dvorkin would make a killer celebrity name. It’s also cool how it compliments [name_u]Henry[/name_u], but I see what you mean about it being a bit out-there.

[name_m]Faramond[/name_m] is also poetic but in a more medieval way. It connects with the ‘D’ in your last name giving the two names a united flow when spoken aloud, if you like this. It’s meaning is rather quaint as well. It is a little bit out-there, since it is quite unusual. There is something unisex about it as well, although it leans to a more boyish side.

[name_m]Benedict[/name_m] is just such a classic. It is timeless yet has retained it’s elegance throughout the years. The ‘Ben’ in [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] rhymes with the ‘Hen’ in [name_u]Henry[/name_u], which sort of fits the two names together, in an obscure way. It also has a multitude of nickname potentials. Although, when said with you last name the ‘ct’ sound sort of catches in your throat. This being said it makes another killer celebrity name.

Out of your partner’s favourites I liked [name_m]Marcus[/name_m], [name_u]William[/name_u] and [name_u]Jasper[/name_u]. I am not really going to elaborate on why because I doubt you really care of my opinions (though it didn’t stop me going on and on) and I have tired myself out with explaining [name_m]Hemlock[/name_m], [name_m]Faramond[/name_m] and [name_m]Benedict[/name_m].

[name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] is super as a first. No bravery needed.
[name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] and [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] are great!
[name_u]Jasper[/name_u] [name_u]Willow[/name_u] and [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] [name_u]Willow[/name_u] are lovely too.

Other combos I like for you:
[name_u]Spencer[/name_u] [name_m]Joel[/name_m]
[name_u]Jasper[/name_u] [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]
[name_m]Joel[/name_m] [name_u]Sinclair[/name_u]

Good luck!

@Blue_Velvet ,I was actually going to add a separate post further down the line to get into what the names conjure, and I really appreciate this answer because names do come with associations. [name_m]Hemlock[/name_m] is “out there” but shortened to locky, hemmy or hal might be more user friendly, so it’s really nice to know somebody else likes it. I do have a special love for these sorts of names.

Your thoughts on [name_m]Faramond[/name_m] too, have definitely made me adjust this up my list, maybe [name_m]Faramond[/name_m] [name_u]John[/name_u] Dvorkin. It’s still very early in our naming process but unisex boyish suits me fine - especially with a more boysy middle.

Also I hadn’t really thought of the [name_u]Henry[/name_u] / [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] “en” sound theme. For me [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] is adorable because it means blessed and I’ve said lots of prayers around having this baby.

I actually do really like to know the reasons people like names I think it helps make a decision. For instance I’m aware I like some pretty wildcard names that some may describe as overly fancy or pretentious, that doesn’t put me off. There are also names I’d never use this side of the pond like Hindley or [name_u]Huntley[/name_u] because we have some famous murderers with these names but I think the name and name meanings are super pretty , so when I hear of them on children born in other places I smile and think “wish I lived there”.

I think the context of why we like names is pretty important. For instance I studied philosophy and know [name_m]Hemlock[/name_m] is a plant, but it’s nice to know if other people know this or if they think the name is made up. I’m not so crazy about created names without some sort of meaning. I will be posting further down this journey but your opinions are always welcome, even the brutal ones. For example, one of our concern with [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] was that as a first name he might get called “horny thorny” when he’s a teenager, or something awful. Kids can be cruel, and I’m not sure a prickly bush wouldn’t lead to some cruel nickname. It’s a fleeting worry, since lots of children are named after plants i.e. [name_u]Briar[/name_u], and it probably is an imagined worry but it did give us pause on that particular choice.

@Victory55 thank you for making me feel more confident about [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m]. I do desperately want to use it but had a few concerns so it really helps getting feedback , positive or negative. I really do like [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] [name_u]Spencer[/name_u], thats going into my list immediately, and i like all 3 of your other combos.

So the [name_u]John[/name_u] relative who passed away actually went by [name_u]Jo[/name_u] , and it’s still a bit to raw that I’d name a child [name_u]Jo[/name_u], or [name_u]Joseph[/name_u] , or anything shortened to [name_u]Jo[/name_u], but [name_m]Joel[/name_m] which is so similar gives me the warmest fuzziest of feelings. I’ve only ever met one joel and he was the class clown, full of fun and laughter, cheeky but not cruel or badly behaved, just very chatty and energetic. So I’m loving [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] [name_m]Joel[/name_m] .

So this will lead to a fun chat with my partner to see which combo he prefers

thank you again - this was great

Hello!

First, I would caution you against [name_m]Hemlock[/name_m] just because it’s so strongly linked with its poison.

I love [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] and think it goes great with [name_u]Henry[/name_u]! Some middles:

[name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] [name_u]Blake[/name_u]
[name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] [name_u]Sinclair[/name_u]
[name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] [name_m]Percival[/name_m]
[name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]

A few other names I think could fit:

[name_u]Atlas[/name_u] [name_u]Sinclair[/name_u] [name_u]John[/name_u]
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] [name_m]Matthias[/name_m] [name_u]John[/name_u]
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m] [name_u]Sinclair[/name_u] [name_u]John[/name_u]
Rowell [name_u]John[/name_u]
[name_u]Alwyn[/name_u] [name_u]Jasper[/name_u]
[name_m]Corwin[/name_m] [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] [name_u]John[/name_u]
[name_u]Tristan[/name_u] [name_m]Joel[/name_m]
[name_m]Vincent[/name_m] [name_m]Ayrton[/name_m] [name_u]John[/name_u]
[name_m]Irving[/name_m] [name_u]George[/name_u]
[name_u]Sage[/name_u] [name_m]Anthony[/name_m]

Hopefully these help

I think [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] is absolutely usable and would be a great choice for you. I like that [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] would share the H with [name_u]Henry[/name_u].

I also want to suggest [name_u]Huxley[/name_u] to you as it sounds similar to some of the names you like, but (as far as I know) without any unpleasant connotations.

I think [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] is totally usable as a first choice. It gives me country squire vibes

I especially like [name_m]Benedict[/name_m], [name_u]Jasper[/name_u], and [name_m]Marcus[/name_m] and they work beautifully with your last name.
