We’ve got a few more weeks to make a final decision but I’d like to get it out of the way.
For the last month we had settled on [name_f]Kerensa[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] but it turns out that it seems pretty difficult for people to say and/or understand? [name_f]Every[/name_f] time we’ve told people our possible choice we usually get “say it again?” or “sorry, what is it?” or they slowly repeat it as if it’s the most difficult name they’ve ever heard, “kuh-ren-zah, huh?” All in all, it’s annoying. I don’t want to saddle my daughter with a name that will cause issues her whole life. I know that it will be different when there’s a face to put to the name, but right now it seems poorly received and none of these people are trying to be rude, they are genuinely unfamiliar with the name.
Now we still have [name_f]Kerensa[/name_f] very close to our hearts and it is still very much an option, but we have been on the hunt again to find a name we love just as much that’s a bit easier to live with. That search as led us to [name_f]Thea[/name_f] and [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f].
1.) My husband seems to think [name_f]Thea[/name_f] is “strictly Greek” and that it’s a bit odd to use on an Anglo-[name_m]Saxon[/name_m] child. Thoughts? I know it’s pretty popular right now.
2.) Is [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] too [name_m]Gilmore[/name_m] Girls? It’s pretty much everyone’s only connection to the name and while it is one of my favorite shows, I don’t want her to be labeled as “daughter of a [name_m]Gilmore[/name_m] Girls fan.” We would not want to use any nicknames if we used [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f].
What do you think? Any thoughts are appreciated!
I think both [name_f]Thea[/name_f] and [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] are lovely options. I’d personally go for [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] - and she’d be at home with many “L” and flowy names that are in right now (so I don’t think GG would be a big deal, it’s not like you’re calling her a pop cultural name without any bigger naming context). What I like about [name_f]Thea[/name_f] though is that it’s more clipped and confident. I see her as a thoughtful, clever but still sunny child. For some reason I couldn’t choose it - don’t think it’s the origin of name (I like [name_f]Callie[/name_f], [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], [name_f]Stella[/name_f] etc, all Greek) but somehow I don’t like saying “Th” names - a personal quirk! It also fits in the context of [name_m]Theodoras[/name_m], Freyas, Leas etc.
I understand your concerns and I think you have to decide how annoying it would be to your daughter but I feel that once an acquaintance is told her name, they only have to be told once and then they know it. But… I really do like [name_f]Thea[/name_f] and I don’t know where you live but generally, we have so many International names around us that I don’t think of [name_f]Thea[/name_f] as only belonging to Greece. Your list reminds me of [name_f]Carys[/name_f] or [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f], if you like them?
I like both [name_f]Thea[/name_f] and [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]. I think of [name_f]Thea[/name_f] as an extremely versatile international name. I know a young [name_f]Thea[/name_f] who is of Latina heritage. [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] is a classic used long before [name_m]Gilmore[/name_m] Girls. I think both of these choices are familiar in a good way, and I agree that that would probably make life easier at times.
I would stay with [name_f]Kerensa[/name_f], personally. It’s a stunningly beautiful name and really isn’t at all hard to pronounce, especially compared to some current names in the trends.
That said, [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] and [name_f]Thea[/name_f] are both lovely choices, too. I like them, but they are not as memorable or impactful as [name_f]Kerensa[/name_f].
I’m Greek and honestly I dont see why [name_f]Thea[/name_f] wouldnt work, there are a bunch of Greek names that are or have been super popular in the UK/US!
[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] is okay, I havent heard of the show you mentioned, but I think [name_f]Kerensa[/name_f] is way prettier than both [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] and [name_f]Thea[/name_f]
