Help us think of Nature, Science, or Inspiring Meaning baby names!

Hello Berries!

My husband and I are both nerdy science fiction loving artists and we’re looking for a name for our first baby. We don’t know the gender yet so we are thinking of both boy and girl names. Less popular names (not in top 50) are preferable.

We love: nature, space, science, math, art, colors, science fiction, video games, and inspirational meanings.

Difficulty - We’re not big on Bible names.

Thanks for your help, Berries. This is so exciting!

hi skylark,
i think these may be off the wall but I figured i’d throw them out there anyway-for the heck of it:
[name]Orion[/name] -constellation- space
[name]Nash[/name]-after [name]John[/name] [name]Nash[/name]
[name]Amadeus[/name]- my favorite composer
[name]Violet[/name] and [name]Indigo[/name]- colors

This was fun. good luck with your name search

Thank for your reply, Csmom.

I purposely didn’t say which names we already like because we want whatever comes to your mind.

[name]Orion[/name] - cool. I like it.
[name]Nash[/name] - interesting
[name]Amadeus[/name] - my husband was big on Orchestra back in High School and College, so he will appreciate this one.
[name]Violet[/name] and [name]Indigo[/name] - I [name]LOVE[/name] these names. [name]Violet[/name] might be getting a little too popular for my taste, but I still love it anyway.

Thanks again. <3

[name]Allegra[/name]? I like the connection to the musical term, [name]Allegro[/name], and it’s meaning (cheerful, lively) but it also has a long history, including being [name]Byron[/name]'s daughter and the daughter of [name]Longfellow[/name] (in the poem The Children’s Hour)

Between the dark and the daylight,
****When the night is beginning to lower,
Comes a pause in the day’s occupations,
****That is known as the Children’s Hour.

I hear in the chamber above me
****The patter of little feet,
The sound of a door that is opened,
****And voices soft and sweet.

From my study I see in the lamplight,
****Descending the broad hall stair,
Grave [name]Alice[/name], and laughing [name]Allegra[/name],
****And [name]Edith[/name] with golden hair.

A whisper, and then a silence:
****Yet I know by their merry eyes
They are plotting and planning together
****To take me by surprise.

A sudden rush from the stairway,
****A sudden raid from the hall!
By three doors left unguarded
****They enter my castle wall!

They climb up into my turret
****O’er the arms and back of my chair;
If I try to escape, they surround me;
****They seem to be everywhere.

They almost devour me with kisses,
****Their arms about me entwine,
[name]Till[/name] I think of the [name]Bishop[/name] of Bingen
****In his Mouse-[name]Tower[/name] on the Rhine!

[name]Do[/name] you think, o blue-eyed banditti,
****Because you have scaled the wall,
Such an old mustache as I am
****Is not a match for you all?

I have you fast in my fortress,
****And will not let you depart,
But put you down into the dungeon
****In the round-tower of my heart.

And there will I keep you forever,
****Yes, forever and a day,
[name]Till[/name] the walls shall crumble to ruin,
****And moulder in dust away!

Thanks for your thoughtful response, [name]Mei[/name] [name]Mei[/name].

I like the name [name]Allegra[/name]. It’s beautiful. Cool poem. My father in law is an actor. He will appreciate that poem.

Thanks, Darlingdoe. It would be nice to tell our child that they’re named after an inspiring scientist or artist. We especially like:

[name]Edwin[/name] - we have [name]Hubble[/name]'s new images up all over the place. I love to be reminded about our origin.
[name]Leonardo[/name] - before we decided to TTC we went on a vacation to [name]Italy[/name] together and saw a museum with [name]Leonardo[/name]'s inventions on display
[name]Ada[/name] - this name was already on our list. computer programming is one of our hobbies (hopefully part of a business soon)
[name]Rosalind[/name] - we like the connection to the scientist, too bad this name is already taken in our extended family

I made a list of astronomy-related names: Astronomy | Nameberry
This list has names with artistic connotations: Artsy | Nameberry
(Let me know if either of them are set on private- I don’t think they are, but I’ll fix it if necessary.)

There are a lot of names I could suggest to you that have great meanings, but based on what you just posted your tastes seem to lean a bit more conservative/classic- I’m assuming names like [name]Boheme[/name] and [name]Bodhi[/name] are out?

Skylark (my mother in law suggested this name. It’s very hippy)

I don’t know if any of these have already been mentioned, but hey, I guess that will make a double vote.

EDIT: I’ve got some more ideas! As far as cool meanings go, how about:
Xia – in Chinese, this word is used to denote the pinkish glow of the clouds at dawn and dusk

Liat – means “you are mine”, the name of the Tonkinese girl in South Pacific

Victoire – A really cool “spin” on Victoria

Solenne – Means “sunshine”

Hope that helps!

Thanks Daisy451.

I’d like to hear the names with great meanings you found. I personally like names that are slightly adventurous, but my husband is more conservative when it comes to names. For example: I like [name]Bodhi[/name], but he thinks it’s sort of weird. I understand why. He says it sounds like “booty” and it has religious meaning (even though Buddhism is cool [name]IMO[/name]) and we don’t want to force any religion on our child. I would consider putting an adventurous name in the middle if we’re not comfortable with using it in the first name.

Here are the names we like from your lists:
[name]Io[/name] (a little on the weird side, but we kinda like it)
[name]Aurora[/name]
[name]Luna[/name]

Thanks, bailibsmum!

You’re either a fellow gamer nerd, or you found a very complete list somewhere. I’m impressed.

Here are the names I like:
Tesla
Curie
[name]Aurora[/name]
[name]Darwin[/name]
[name]Newton[/name]
[name]Nova[/name]
Xylem (This would make a cool middle name for a boy)
[name]Oceanna[/name] (my husband doesn’t like this one)
[name]Jade[/name]
Liara (I wish this was a “real” name with a nice meaning because it’s pretty and Mass Effect was great)

Thanks, [name]Sunshine[/name].10!

Here are my favorite names from your list:

[name]Laurel[/name]
[name]Althea[/name] (the main character in our buddy’s book) - love the meaning too

[name]Rutherford[/name] or Democritus.

The names with meanings for me:
Lazuli, [name]Azure[/name], [name]Azura[/name], [name]Mazarine[/name], and [name]Cyan[/name]: I like these as an homage to one of my favorite poems, [name]Shel[/name] Silverstein’s “Masks.” [name]Link[/name] here: http://soulpancake.com/conversations/view/95604/masks-by-shel-silverstein.html I also like [name]Blue[/name] as a color for the deep ocean and clear sky, the two infinities.
[name]Boheme[/name]- I like for its obvious artistic connotation
[name]Ariadne[/name]- I like the idea of the [name]Ariadne[/name] mythological figure leading [name]Theseus[/name] out of the maze, a guide and savior through the winding labyrinth
[name]Isis[/name]- Same reason, essentially: In Egyptian mythology, [name]Isis[/name]’ husband [name]Osiris[/name] was killed by his brother [name]Set[/name], who then threw the pieces of [name]Osiris[/name]’ body into the wind, scattering them across the earth. [name]Isis[/name] traveled the world picking up the pieces and put [name]Osiris[/name] back together again.
[name]Annabel[/name]- For [name]Annabel[/name] [name]Lee[/name]
[name]Aurora[/name] and Borealis- Occasionally, the sun emits bursts of super energized plasma that has reacted so much it actually changes the atomic form of gas. The plasma travels to earth and hits us directly, but instead of harming us, the earth’s magnetic fields pull it to the poles, where it becomes [name]Aurora[/name] Borealis and [name]Aurora[/name] Australis. I think it’s a pretty beautiful fact!

[name]Willow[/name]- a tree that bends in all directions with the wind, but never breaks (poetically, of course- you can break a willow, it’s just not easy.)
[name]Saoirse[/name]- means “freedom”
Brave
[name]Callum[/name]- “[name]Dove[/name],” the bird of peace.
[name]Quill[/name] and [name]Penn[/name]- Because writing is so wonderful!
[name]Ray[/name]- [name]Ray[/name] of hope, ray of light- the word always seems to imply something really positive
[name]Oak[/name]- The tree of strength and endurance. Also Professor [name]Oak[/name], if you’re a nerd.
[name]Adam[/name]- because it’s a homonym to “Atom,” and also means “[name]Man[/name].” It reminds me of the (science-related) quote “Given enough time, hydrogen begins to wonder where it came from and where it is going.” because it is about groups of atoms contemplating themselves, which, ultimately, is what humans are.

That’s all I can think of off the top of my head, I’ll add more if I think of them. Let me know if any strike your fancy!

Thanks, Daisy451. Those are some interesting names and explanations.

Here are my favorites:
Lazuli - my first painting teacher told us that blue pigment used to be very expensive because it was made of the gemstone lapis lazuli, every time I use blue paint I think of this stone
[name]Azure[/name] - I like this name, but the pronunciation is a little tough for me
[name]Cyan[/name] - this would be cool as a middle name to pay respect to my husband’s occupation, where this color holds special meaning
[name]Aurora[/name] - cool on so many levels
[name]Stella[/name] - I like this name, although it’s getting a little too popular. [name]Neil[/name] DG [name]Tyson[/name] is the best.
[name]Willow[/name] - my mother in law keeps trying to get me to use this name, which I love, but it’s very popular
