I am expecting my first child and we are having some trouble agreeing on girl names that we like. We are from [name_u]Montana[/name_u] and have a love affair with the mountains and would love a name that conjurs an image of the kind of wild little girl running barefoot through the hills. This could be TMI, but she was conceived during an adventurous backpacking trip in the mountains so we’d love for her name to reflect that! Could also include names whose meaning has something to do with mountains, nature, wildness, adventure, or traveler/explorer. We don’t want a name that is too out there, but also aren’t interested in really trendy/popular names. I am also a big reader and like the idea of names inspired by literature.
A couple of possible middle names are [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] or [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] (these are family names).
Some names we already like -
[name_u]Madison[/name_u] (love this name - after the river in MT, but this name is way too popular so I can’t get behind it)
[name_f]Maya[/name_f]
[name_u]Jo[/name_u] (after [name_u]Jo[/name_u] [name_u]March[/name_u] in [name_m]Little[/name_m] Women - but this sounds like a nickname and I can’t think of any full names for it that I like - [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] or [name_f]Joann[/name_f] don’t really grab me)
[name_u]Sage[/name_u] (my husband doesn’t like this one)
[name_f]Savannah[/name_f] (my husband doesn’t like this one either!)
I tried to think of nature names with a Western flair:
[name_u]Arden[/name_u]
[name_u]Aspen[/name_u]
[name_u]Cheyenne[/name_u]
[name_u]Dakota[/name_u]
[name_f]Lark[/name_f] (I’m sure you know this but the meadowlark is the state bird of [name_u]Montana[/name_u]!)
[name_u]Linden[/name_u]
[name_u]Sierra[/name_u]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f]
I like tree names: [name_u]Linden[/name_u], [name_u]Aspen[/name_u], [name_f]Willow[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Laurel[/name_f], and although it’s supposedly a boy’s name, I love the name [name_m]Birch[/name_m], and would have no problem using it for a girl.
My family friends’ chose the middle name “[name_u]Scout[/name_u]” because of the adventurous, outdoorsy quality. She’s [name_u]Ember[/name_u] [name_u]Scout[/name_u] and the others are [name_f]Willow[/name_f] and [name_f]Coral[/name_f]… sounds like your kind of names!
Would [name_u]Montana[/name_u] be too much? I like that name. In what season or month was she conceived? You could use one if it fits.
[name_u]Montana[/name_u] (if that isn’t too much)
[name_u]Jordan[/name_u] - there are tons of beautiful [name_u]Jordan[/name_u] [name_m]Rivers[/name_m] in the world, plus you get [name_u]Jo[/name_u]!!
[name_f]Jobeth[/name_f] or [name_u]Jo[/name_u]-[name_f]Beth[/name_f] - you get [name_u]Jo[/name_u] and [name_f]Beth[/name_f]
[name_u]March[/name_u] - not only does this have a [name_m]Little[/name_m] Women connection, it’s a vigorous, outdoorsy month and a full-action verb! I would expect a girl named [name_u]March[/name_u] to march up any mountain.
[name_f]Summer[/name_f]/[name_f]Autumn[/name_f]
[name_f]Spring[/name_f] - because of the different meanings of this word, it would work perfectly, regardless of whether she was conceived in springtime or not.
[name_f]April[/name_f]/[name_f]May[/name_f]/[name_u]June[/name_u]/[name_f]October[/name_f]
[name_u]August[/name_u]/[name_f]Augusta[/name_f] - this would fit a “mountain girl” even if the month bears little significance
[name_f]Heidi[/name_f] - whenever I think “mountain” I think [name_f]Heidi[/name_f]!!!
Adventure - maybe a little out there, but I like it!
[name_u]Morgan[/name_u]
[name_u]Juniper[/name_u]
[name_f]Bryony[/name_f]
[name_f]Avis[/name_f]
[name_f]Apple[/name_f] - this is a very outdoorsy and sunny name, to me, but I also understand why it isn’t more popular
[name_f]Alhambra[/name_f]
[name_f]Olympia[/name_f]
[name_u]Scout[/name_u]
[name_f]Zora[/name_f]
[name_f]Velvet[/name_f] - because of National [name_f]Velvet[/name_f], I always think of outdoorsy girl on horseback!
[name_u]Sky[/name_u] - a modern classic, for a reason!
[name_f]Air[/name_f] - an underrated name, one of my favourites
[name_u]Blue[/name_u] - too bad [name_u]Blue[/name_u] [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] is taken, because it’s such a cool outdoorsy name.
[name_f]Oriana[/name_f]
[name_f]Glory[/name_f]
[name_m]Lorcan[/name_m]
[name_u]Regan[/name_u]
[name_u]Raven[/name_u]
[name_f]Delta[/name_f]
[name_u]Lake[/name_u]
[name_f]Deryn[/name_f]
[name_f]Blythe[/name_f]
Well I like a lot of the suggestions, such as [name_u]River[/name_u], [name_u]Aspen[/name_u], [name_u]Dakota[/name_u], [name_f]Willow[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
Some Others…
[name_f]Brynn[/name_f]- means [name_m]Hill[/name_m]
[name_f]Taryn[/name_f]- [name_m]Rocky[/name_m] [name_m]Hill[/name_m]

[name_u]Kendall[/name_u]- valley of the river [name_m]Kent[/name_m]
[name_f]Winslet[/name_f]- [name_u]Wynn[/name_u]'s channel or stream

[name_f]Linnea[/name_f]- twin flower, lime tree
[name_f]Rosie[/name_f]
[name_u]Skye[/name_u]
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f]- lover of horses
[name_f]Sparrow[/name_f]
[name_f]Topanga[/name_f]- where the mountain meets the sea
[name_f]Parvati[/name_f]- The daughter of the mountain (may be fitting lol)
Thank you everyone for these wonderful suggestions! I want to have multiple little girls now so that I can use a bunch of them
I kept thinking about the suggestions “[name_f]JoBeth[/name_f]” and “Jolene” came up with an alternative - “JoLynn” or “Jolynn”, which I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u]. I don’t know if we would use this as a first and middle name ("[name_u]Jo[/name_u] [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] Surname") or as a first name with a different middle name (“Jolynn ____ Surname”), so I will have to think about that. Maybe I can use one of your wonderful suggestions to fill in the middle name. If anybody has opinions or suggestions on this, let me know.
