Help with Autumn!

We are expecting our second in [name_f]October[/name_f] and were pretty set on [name_f]Violet[/name_f] for girl name…that is, until is made Nameberry’s top names of 2014 so far. I thought [name_f]Violet[/name_f] was still pretty original, so this came as a big surprise! We definitely do not want a top ten name, so unfortunately I think we have decided against it. We are now in love with [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Raine[/name_f].

What is your honest opinion, AND please offer up any other middle names that would go well. We are also curious what nicknames others have come up with from [name_f]Autumn[/name_f].

Thanks for your help all!

The Nameberry top names don’t usually coincide with the SSA top names, as I believe they are based solely on searches here on this site, which absolutely does not account for all baby namers. I say this to mean, [name_f]Violet[/name_f] will not be a top ten name in actuality next year - it is next to impossible, in fact. It’s just very liked by all of us nameberry nerds.

In any case, I think [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] is very pretty and will be quite unique regardless of where you are. I don’t know of any cute nicknames associated with it, so I think you would have to just be really creative with it once you meet your little girl.

In full disclosure, I don’t like the pairing of [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Raine[/name_f]. It just means autumn rain to me, which is a little too literal for my tastes, but it does flow well and look pretty.

Best of luck! x

I agree with pp. The Nameberry top names don’t really mean anything about popularity.

In fact:

According to SSA rankings, [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is #69, while [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] is slightly higher, at #65. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is climbing very quickly, but [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] has been in the top 100 names since 1997. So they are actually pretty similar in terms of popularity. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] may rise a bit more, since it’s shooting up so quickly. I’m sure it varies by region, but I know one baby [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] and no baby Violets (one many coming soon.)

[name_f]My[/name_f] point is, if you love [name_f]Violet[/name_f], use it! It’s not that popular. [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] is great too, though.

I do want to discourage [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Raine[/name_f]. It’s too much, having two nature names together.

I’m not a statistics person but in my forty years I’ve only ever met one [name_f]Violet[/name_f], and one [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], and I live on the west coast where nontraditional names flourish.

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] is nms but if you love it then go for it!

Other suggestion for [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]…
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Lia[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] (or [name_u]Reese[/name_u])
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_u]Wren[/name_u] (still a bit hippie-ish but pretty)
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] (or [name_f]Maeva[/name_f])
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_u]Dana[/name_u]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Julia[/name_f]

[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_u]Rain[/name_u] I prefer this spelling and I like
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
usually I say be careful it doesn’t sound like a thing but in this case I really like it and my pickles is legendary. I think you’ll be just fine with either [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is not very common just a lot of people like it , not necessarily are giving it to children at the moment though they may be and might. It just means people like it, its lovely. But I also really like [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] I like the combination of the two quite a lot

[name_f]My[/name_f] former employer had a daughter names autumn who was nicknamed [name_f]Attie[/name_f]! Others I heard her Mom or siblings use are…
Auttie
Tums
[name_f]Audi[/name_f]
[name_m]Otto[/name_m]
And it’s a stretch but [name_f]Amy[/name_f]/[name_f]Aimee[/name_f] could work.

I personally do not like two nature names. [name_m]How[/name_m] about…
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_u]Laine[/name_u]/[name_f]Laina[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Elaine[/name_f]/[name_f]Elena[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]

Ok, that makes sense everyone! Thanks for your input! I will go home and share this info with my hubby!! I think we were pretty set on the middle name [name_f]Raine[/name_f], so maybe we can go back to [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Raine[/name_f] and keep [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Raine[/name_f] as a back up! All this stressing about the girl name and we will probably have another boy! haha!

I’m not a fan of [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] paired with any other noun or “real word” that gives it a literal meaning and turns the name into sounding like an adjective, a bit too hippie to drown out the cute.

But [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Raine[/name_f] you could get away with I think. The flow is pretty and smooth.

I honestly think you’d be fine with [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. Especially if it’s what’s in your gut to choose because you both love it.

I really like [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], but I think [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Raine[/name_f] may be a little too nature-y. Here are some other middles I think work well with [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]:

[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Naomi[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Odette[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Willa[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Lola[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_u]Ray[/name_u]/[name_u]Rae[/name_u]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_u]Halle[/name_u]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Leona[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Calla[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Sadie[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Colette[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Delia[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Nia[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Gaia[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Gisele[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]

I have noticed the surge in the name [name_f]Violet[/name_f], but it still feels fresher to me than [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]. However, if you choose [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] I would strongly prefer a different middle name. Preferably not a word name. As another pp said, [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] [name_f]Raine[/name_f] just sounds like autumn rain to me. Which is a pretty common phenomenon, so it’s words that actually get used together normally, not just words that could in theory describe something, but isn’t a familiar phrase (eg. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]).

The Nameberry top names are based on number of searches, not actual popularity. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is far from the top 10. I actually prefer [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] over [name_f]Violet[/name_f], but I wouldn’t use it with a noun name in the middle spot.
