Help with Harriet

[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] has been moving up my list as a lot of my other favorites get too popular or vetoed by husband. I like the associations with [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] Tubman, [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_m]Beecher[/name_m] [name_m]Stowe[/name_m], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] the Spy, and nickname [name_f]Hattie[/name_f]. It seems to have great vintage appeal and a nice sound, so I wonder why it’s outside the top 1000 in the U.S. Is it all because of the word “hairy”? What are your thoughts on the name?

Which leads to question #2, [name_m]Will[/name_m] a [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] get teased because of her name? Our last name also has the word “gas” in it. Is that too much to inflict on an elementary school girl, or am I overthinking it?

And then the fun part, what middle name suggestions do you have for [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]? I’m looking for something light and feminine to balance the more serious [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]. I came up with [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Willa[/name_f], but would love more ideas. Our last name is similar to G@ston, so no A or O names.

Unfortunately, she will probably be teased for her name at least once. If a school kid can give another an unfortunate nickname, she probably will (I don’t know anyone with any name that is unusual or lent itself to nicknames that didn’t get teased occasionally). However, this name is a nice one, and not so tempting that teasing would endure for too long (in my experience, by high school most names cease to be made fun of). So I think both things are true; teasing will occur, but you might be overthinking it. There are definitely some cute nicknames and great associations! It’s never been a name I’ve loved, but I think it’s one of those names that the wearer grows into and makes their own.

For middle names:
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Lena[/name_f]

I personally adore the name [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], but I think it’s sort of like [name_f]Edith[/name_f] or [name_f]Ethel[/name_f]. It’s very “old lady,” and not yet in a cool way. However, I think any girl called [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] would love her name and her namesakes, and especially if she were called [name_f]Hattie[/name_f], I can’t see her getting teased.

For her middle name, what about [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Stella[/name_f]?

I was a teacher for a very long time and the only time I ever heard any kid get teased for their name was a girl called [name_f]Emma[/name_f] . . . And they teased her by calling her [name_f]Emily[/name_f] for a day? Elementary school kids are weird, but they usually don’t care what their peers names are. Especially when they themselves are [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] or [name_m]Felix[/name_m] or something.

I loooooove the name [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]! I didn’t notice the word hairy in it until you mentioned it, and if your last name is similar to G@ston, the gas is pronounced differently than the word gas. I don’t recall anyone ever being teased about their name in elementary school, except a teacher with But(t)in their name :joy:. I don’t think she’ll be teased. I also don’t think it sounds ‘old lady’ at all. For middle names, I have an entire list (I actually made a thread on this a while back!):

I actually never though of “hairy” until you said that, and I honestly don’t think she would be teased in school. Plus, [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] is just too adorable. You also have the nickname [name_f]Ettie[/name_f] if you like it, and I think as vintage names, such as [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] and even [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] become more popular, it won’t sound as uncommon.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Willa[/name_f]. I’ve had such a big crush on [name_f]Willa[/name_f], and I think it flows absolutely beautifully with [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]. Still, a few suggestions.

Yay I’m glad most people don’t think of hairy  And glad you like [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Willa[/name_f]! Thanks so much for the suggestions. The hairy thing isn’t so noticeable to me. Unfortunately, not a fan of it. I find [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] very dated and old ladyish.
