I’m writing a short story about a woman and her male best friend, who’s like a brother to her, who decided to go on a road trip together, as a way to escape their lives and all the memories back home for a few weeks. The woman’s young son passed away from cancer a year from the day they get back. I’m trying to come up with names for the three main characters. I have some ideas, and I know what type of names I think will fit, but nothing I’ve come up with feels right, especially for the best friend and son.
Time Period/Location: 2019, Castle Pines, [name_u]Colorado[/name_u]
The woman used to be strong, bold, brave, and loud, but after the death of her son became quiet and sad. She was named by a single, British mother who likes long, elegant names. I’d like her name to be relatively well known. It should have a shorter nickname that she used to go by, preferably one that is lively and energetic. I’ve considered [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Lizzie[/name_f]) and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] (nn [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]) but neither seems right.
The best friend is a friendly, smart, no-nonsense person, who was named by his American parents. His great-grandparents immigrated from [name_f]France[/name_f], so he could possibly have a french name, but this isn’t necessary. I’ve considered [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_m]Jeffrey[/name_m], but neither seems right. His sisters are named [name_f]Mia[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], and his parents are [name_f]Nicole[/name_f] and [name_u]Andre[/name_u]. His name shouldn’t be super rare, but it’s okay if not’s super common either.
The son was playful, innocent, and silly. He had blond hair and beautiful blue eyes. He was named by the woman (his father was never part of the picture). He died when he was only two, so I want the name to sound young and innocent. He should either have a shorter name or a nickname that he went by, with a longer given name. I’ve considered [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Max[/name_u]) and [name_m]Clay[/name_m]. His mother used to be rebellious, so the popularity of the name doesn’t matter at all. I think a nature, word, or place name might be cute, but those aren’t necessities.
Thanks!
