I just heard the name Solvieg. I see it can be pronounced Soul-vay or [name_m]Sol[/name_m]-Vai. I love both. It is not a name that I would use as I am not at all Norwegian and it wouldn’t seem right for me to have a name spelled this way. I just love the sound. Are there names that are more common that end in the vay or vai sounds? I cannot think of any at all.
I’m not even sure how to begin to search for a sound like this. Help, please! I think it’s so pretty.
I also have been crushing on Eira. So if you can think of anything with a similar sound to that let me know. I’m unsure if it bothers me that it would be the same in sound to the boy name Ira.
There are plenty of female Scandinavian names than end in -veig, but none of them are common outside of the nordic countries (some of them are even rare in nordic countries too):
Liveig (lee-vay)
Marveig
Asveig
Sigveig
Anveig
I can’t think of many either names that have the same sound. I can’t think of any other name that ends in -vay or something similar. Maybe:
[name_f]Esmay[/name_f]
[name_f]Sunday[/name_f]
Meira
[name_f]Solveig[/name_f] and [name_f]Eira[/name_f] are lovely names. (I pronounce [name_f]Eira[/name_f] more like AY-ra.)
Unfortunately I can’t think of many names that end in the sound -vay or -vai. There’s Lavey, but it has rather controversial connotations ([name_m]Anton[/name_m] LaVey).
I would suggest:
[name_f]Mireille[/name_f]
Romée
[name_f]Aliz[/name_f]ée
[name_f]Soleil[/name_f]
Salomé
Azélie
Zélie
Vaila
I have the exact same problem! As of now, I just settled for a more phonetic spelling (Solvay) to put on my list. I also have the similar sounding Solvang (place name, Danish for “sunny field”) on my boys’ list, which I find similar enough in sounds to Wolfgang to be usable, at least as a middle.
There’s Soleil, but it doesn’t quite have the same feel to me. There’s also the English folk song Sovay, and I’ve read that Sovay may be derived from Sophie or Sylvie. I’ve had Vale on my list for quite a while, and reading other posts, I am realizing it has some similar sounds. Yvaine has the -vay sound too. Cathay and Adelais have the same cadence and end in the -ay sound.
Eira is visually gorgeous, but I don’t love the shared pronunciation to Ira. What about Irene or Irena? Or Mara, Myra, Tara, Maura, Kyra, Lyra, Cyra.
Soliel is a name that sounds similarly and [name_u]Arra[/name_u] is similar to [name_f]Eira[/name_f]. But honestly in regards to [name_f]Eira[/name_f] I think you should just go for it.
