I’m not planning on using this, I just wanted to talk about it I suppose. I watched [name_m]Pacific[/name_m] Rim yesterday (which I loved btw, robots and monsters? Awesome!) and was excited to hear some of the characters’ names. [name_f]One[/name_f] of the men was named [name_m]Hercules[/name_m] and I almost clapped when I discovered this. They called him Herc, and he was this manly man from Australia, with a son named [name_m]Chuck[/name_m]. It was so perfect and made me wish I knew how my son would turn out so I could consider something as rad as [name_m]Hercules[/name_m] for him. Unfortunately, between my genes (I’m very short) and my SOs genes (he’s tall but lanky) our son probably wouldn’t be big enough to wear [name_m]Hercules[/name_m] with a grin.
But Herc, oh my. I enjoyed hearing the name in a setting that didn’t involve the ancient Greeks. Though I suppose the name was rather fitting, as the character was fighting kaiju (monsters).
I don’t see why you couldn’t use it as an unrelated nick name or even a middle name. The only problem with it is I think he may be embarrassed to have it as a first name. [name_m]Perseus[/name_m] is a mythological hero who isn’t humongous. And [name_u]Percy[/name_u] is a nice approachable nick name. Your other names really aren’t my style. [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] is nice and I do like it, but in [name_u]America[/name_u] too many people associate it as a girl name.
Oh, no, like I said I have no intention of using it. I was simply appreciating the use of the name [name_m]Hercules[/name_m] in something other than a retelling of THE [name_m]Hercules[/name_m]. I love mythological names, but I wouldn’t say [name_m]Hercules[/name_m] is one of my favorites. I do really like [name_m]Perseus[/name_m], but again, there are others I like more.
The other names I listed aren’t names I’d use either, just names from the movie that I thought were fun. I always enjoy hearing the names people pick for their fictional characters. [name_u]Raleigh[/name_u] and [name_m]Yancy[/name_m] were brothers. [name_m]Hannibal[/name_m] was a character who named himself [name_m]Hannibal[/name_m]. Mako was a young Japanese female- I guess I should have said that. I haven’t slept in over 24 hours and my brain is starting to hop around some. [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] was also a female, and she was married to [name_f]Aleksis[/name_f]. Herc and [name_m]Chuck[/name_m], as I said, were father and son.
I agree that on the wrong person, [name_m]Hercules[/name_m] would be embarrassing, which is why I wouldn’t use it. I find [name_m]Thor[/name_m] to be similar, however much I love [name_m]Thor[/name_m]. They’re simply too large of a name. What happens if [name_m]Hercules[/name_m] and [name_m]Thor[/name_m] are slim, petite males who wear glasses, write poetry and play the clarinet in band? I imagine life would be miserable for them throughout their younger years. The right personality can make any name work, but there’s no guarantee that little newborn is going to grow into his name, either with brawn or personality.
Oh lol I didn’t realize the other names were from the same movie. haha xD Maybe I should pay better attention. I knew you didn’t really intend to use [name_m]Hercules[/name_m] though.
I think a slim poetic [name_m]Thor[/name_m] could work… B)
ninanoo: I suppose I could imagine a slim poetic [name_m]Thor[/name_m]. There’s a romance in [name_m]Thor[/name_m] that would suit a wider range of body and personality types, though in my heart I can’t imagine anything but a blond god with rippling muscles…
saracita: Sorry, yes, that’s why I let my first sentence explain I wasn’t considering it. I wish I could, but it just wouldn’t work. Overweight, yes, that’s an issue I hadn’t considered, but for sure something to think about. An obese [name_m]Hercules[/name_m] might just be worse off than a small [name_m]Hercules[/name_m].
[name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] is awesome. Moriarty is another I’ve always secretly dreamed of that I’d never use. Damn those larger than life namesakes.
When I hear Herc, I always think of a military transport helicopter, but that’s probably not everyone’s reaction…
[name_m]Hercules[/name_m] seems a bit out there, but then I worked with a French guy named [name_m]Hercule[/name_m], the French version of [name_m]Hercules[/name_m]. Granted, he was in the army so he was obviously not a pushover, but he was also intelligent, well-mannered and intellectual. So [name_m]Hercules[/name_m] could work as a name, if someone was brave enough.
I love [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] and [name_f]Aleksis[/name_f] for men. It’s the russophile in me.
I like it but prefer the Greek [name_m]Herakles[/name_m] – her-ak-lees.
OMG [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m]! I adore this name so much! There aren’t a lot of names I honestly think are too much for a kid if you find the right nickname, but [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] is just…that’s it. He’s the only one. [name_m]Hercules[/name_m]/[name_m]Herakles[/name_m] is the same. I just can’t see it on anyone. Other names I like that are like that, [name_m]Aristotle[/name_m], Archimedes ([name_m]Even[/name_m] though I’m using it as my male middle name and suggested it to [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f])…
maggie: I love [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] and [name_f]Aleksis[/name_f] for men as well. And [name_u]Misha[/name_u]! Though that’s due in part to my ridiculous crush on [name_u]Misha[/name_u] [name_u]Collins[/name_u].
dantea: [name_m]Herakles[/name_m] is great, though the most natural feeling nickname to me is [name_f]Hera[/name_f], which wouldn’t work. Archimedes is one of those delicious names I love saying. Some names just sound (and taste) good on the tongue, and for me, Archimedes is one of those. The kind of name you say while standing over a cliff, so you can hear it echo. Definitely one to keep in the middle, but I wouldn’t let it hide in the middle if it were my name!
Redwoodfrey: [name_u]Misha[/name_u] is also awesome. I knew a very masculine [name_u]Mischa[/name_u] growing up, so it’s always seemed like a male name to me. Our top boy’s name is [name_m]Paul[/name_m] and if we have a little [name_m]Paul[/name_m], I plan on calling him [name_u]Pasha[/name_u].
I love [name_u]Misha[/name_u] [name_u]Collins[/name_u].
I saw [name_m]Pacific[/name_m] Rim today. I’m so glad you made this thread, because Attractive Blond [name_m]Man[/name_m]'s name wasn’t said very often. I couldn’t figure out if it was [name_u]Riley[/name_u] or [name_u]Raleigh[/name_u].
