What do you think of [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] for a middle name. It is after the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] character, and I think she is a great role model, but how would someone feel about being named after someone fictional?
That wouldn’t bother me, but I am a huge HP fan. I think it depends on how it sounds with the first name you’ve chosen, of course.
I love it and would definitely not mind being named after a fictional character, especially one that is such a great role model. It’s one thing if it was a fictional name, but it’s a real name used well before [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]. The best part about being named after a fictional character is that you have a story to tell your child when they ask how you named them- you can give read them all the books and explain how they’re just as courageous and bright as the character they were named after.
I adore it and I’m actually hoping DH will let me slip it in as a middle for a daughter someday (he said I could, but we’ll see lol). [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_m]Granger[/name_m] is one of the best role models I can think of, fictional or not. As far as how someone would feel about being named after someone fictional, I was named after a TV character. So was my sister. And my husband. It doesn’t bother any of us. The association meant a lot to our parents, so that means something to us, too. It’s better than naming your child Postage Stamp, just because you like the sound lol.
I think you definitely can and should use it! It’s a) a beautiful name b) a wonderful role model c) in the middle spot, so it’s a safe place, and she doesn’t have to use it ever if she doesn’t want to!
Lots of people use literary and fictional references in the names of their children! And as a middle it won’t be as on-the-nose as using it as a first name choice would be.
I love it! It works very well in the middle spot and has nothing but positive associations. Go for it :).
[name_u]True[/name_u] story: I recently met an adult woman named [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]. It was her first name, given by her parents at birth, and she was in her thirties or forties so she wasn’t named after the character. I commented on it and she said she loved having that name and wasn’t bothered by the literary association at all. She had such wonderful, cheerful energy that it made me really love the name regardless of the character!
The thing is it’s not a made-up name, it’s one with a rich history of its own. So if your daughter grows up not liking the association she can just tell people her parents picked it because they liked it! But I think it’s a beautiful name and a great namesake. Who wouldn’t want to be named after someone smart, resilient and loyal?
I’d gladly use [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] as a first or middle. I agree she’s a great character, and she’s one of my favourites, to the point where I actually want to honour her too (I love using character names, as they mean a lot to me). Of course you can’t guarantee a child will like being named after a fictional character, but I’d love to be, and in the middle there’s a good chance few people would hear it and comment on the character anyway.
