What do you think of the name [name_m]Heron[/name_m]? I’m sort of undecided. I go back and forth between loving it and hating it. Normally, I don’t like words for names, but for some reason this one is sticking. I was thinking it would be best as a middle name, but I can’t think of a name that sounds best.
What do you think of [name_m]Heron[/name_m]? Is it usable for a middle name? If so, what would you use as a first name?
I immediately think of the Great Lakes, [name_u]Lake[/name_u] [name_m]Heron[/name_m] being one of them. I live “near” them, and it’s a big association for me. Not a bad association, but very odd to me as a name.
I like bird names. Like [name_f]Lark[/name_f], [name_u]Finch[/name_u], [name_u]Wren[/name_u], [name_u]Robin[/name_u], etc. I really want to like [name_m]Heron[/name_m], but I can’t for some reason.
I agree that is has a sound to it that isn’t so appealing.
At first glance I see Heroin, like the drug not a hero.
I think it’s usable, especially as a middle. I didn’t even know it was a bird, until I saw it classed as a word name on Nameberry and looked it up. And coincidentally, it was only yesterday (when I finished TFIOS) I actually saw one mentioned in context. Anyway, I quite like it (I don’t mind word names), though it has a bit of a surname name feeling for me. I’d instinctively say Heer-on, but I haven’t a clue if that’s right. As for firsts I’d probably go for classic/vintage names (though I’m not sure of your style):
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_m]Heron[/name_m]
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Heron[/name_m]
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] [name_m]Heron[/name_m]
[name_m]Adalius[/name_m] [name_m]Heron[/name_m]
[name_m]Timothy[/name_m] [name_m]Heron[/name_m]
I never would have associated a [name_m]Heron[/name_m] with [name_u]Lake[/name_u] Huron. In Eastern PA we pronounce it hure (like pure)-on.
I’m struggling because I really generally don’t like animal names such as [name_f]Lark[/name_f], [name_u]Robin[/name_u], [name_u]Finch[/name_u], [name_u]Wren[/name_u].
I think what really hit me with the name, is that it reminded me of [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] Orne Jewett’s “The White [name_m]Heron[/name_m]”. I read it in my Sophomore year in college, and the story was really lovely. I saw a heron not too long ago, and brought the story to mind.
I think it would work as a middle name. The suggestions of [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] are names I was thinking of for first names to go with it.
I like [name_m]Heron[/name_m]. I think it could work as a first. He would have the more traditional [name_m]Harry[/name_m] as a nickname if he felt [name_m]Heron[/name_m] didn’t suit. It’s so similar to [name_m]Aaron[/name_m], I don’t think most people would find it odd. I’d go with a more traditional middle, perhaps a family name, a three or more syllable name would sound nice I think. [name_m]Heron[/name_m] [name_m]Zachariah[/name_m] or [name_m]Heron[/name_m] [name_m]Lysander[/name_m], [name_m]Heron[/name_m] [name_u]Everett[/name_u], [name_m]Heron[/name_m] [name_m]Anthony[/name_m].
I love it. I’d use it as a first or a middle. Herons are magical birds, with their long legs and gigantic wings and dinosaur faces. Plus there’s the [name_m]Gil[/name_m] [name_m]Scott[/name_m] [name_m]Heron[/name_m] association.
Thanks for the feedback everyone! It seems Nameberry is as torn as I am. I never even noticed the similarity to heroin.
I love the suggestions of [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_m]Heron[/name_m], [name_m]Timothy[/name_m] [name_m]Heron[/name_m], [name_m]Mitchell[/name_m] [name_m]Heron[/name_m], and even [name_m]Heron[/name_m] [name_m]Anthony[/name_m]. I’ll have to keep it in mind, and mull it over to see if I can really keep it on my list.
[name_m]Heron[/name_m] is one of my family names so I’ve been considering this name too. I definitely only use it as a middle name because many people would think heroin and while it may not affect you, it’s also a brand of paracetamol in Australia.
I don’t know, I think it could be okay as a middle, but I think it might be problematic as a first name, because of the pronunciation issues. I say it hair-en, but some accents say it here-on, which isn’t as attractive in my opinion. I do like it when it’s said hair-en.
I don’t normally like anything but traditional names, but I do like this one. It reminds me of my favorite young adult book - The Perilous Gard. One of the main characters is [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] [name_m]Heron[/name_m], though in that case it’s a last name. I really can’t see anyone having pronunciation issues, or if they do, they’d probably have issues with tons of names. As a first name he could even use [name_m]Harry[/name_m] as a nickname. It certainly sounds much more masculine than any other bird name for that reason.
