I’m pondering the name [name_m]Luke[/name_m] for a boy, but I don’t want people to automatically assume that he’s a [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]. I despise [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] with a passion, but I really am starting to like [name_m]Luke[/name_m]. I usually don’t have a problem with nicknamey names, but I’m really worried about this one. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think people will automatically assume he’s a [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]? If so, do you have any alternatives to [name_m]Luke[/name_m]? Thanks ![]()
You might get some people who assume [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] is his full name, but if you are introducing him as [name_m]Luke[/name_m], I would think those instances would be rare.
For me [name_m]Luke[/name_m], will be [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and not [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]. So I think it’s totally usable on it’s own. I’ve never met a [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] who goes by [name_m]Luke[/name_m].
[name_m]Luke[/name_m] is not a nickname. It’s a full name in its own right. I don’t know why anyone would assume that a boy/man introduced as [name_m]Luke[/name_m] is actually a [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]?
[name_m]Luke[/name_m], being a great classic biblical name, definitely stands on its own. I wouldn’t assume [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] at all.
I know of one [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] that insists he be called [name_m]Luke[/name_m]. [name_m]Luke[/name_m] is actually more popular in my area than [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]. I don’t think most people assume [name_m]Luke[/name_m]'s full name would be [name_m]Lucas[/name_m], so you should be fine.
I do know of a few [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]'s (Lucases?) who go by [name_m]Luke[/name_m], but because [name_m]Luke[/name_m] is a proper name in its own right, I would not assume a [name_m]Luke[/name_m] is a [name_m]Lucas[/name_m].
Did that make any sense? I hope so! I am another who much prefers [name_m]Luke[/name_m] to [name_m]Lucas[/name_m].
I like [name_m]Luke[/name_m] better than [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] (which inevitably reminds me of mucus!), but I should think they’d get over it. [name_m]Luc[/name_m] is used on it’s own in [name_f]France[/name_f], and [name_m]Luke[/name_m] is the form used in the Bible (although it comes from the Greek name Λουκας ([name_m]Loukas[/name_m])). I think there’s alternatives, like [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] or [name_m]Lucius[/name_m] or [name_m]Luka[/name_m] (I like [name_m]Luka[/name_m] more than [name_m]Lucas[/name_m], but I’m still not the hugest fan).
I know a kid named [name_m]Jon[/name_m] [name_m]Luke[/name_m], who has almost always gone by [name_m]Luke[/name_m], and he’s never seemed to have any troubles with it (although, as a kid, I remember giving his mom flack for not spelling [name_m]John[/name_m] “properly”, haha! Once a name nerd always a name nerd, I suppose…). Although I remember a member on here who has a just [name_m]Luke[/name_m], and at his school one of the administrative ladies was insisting that he had to have a full name and that [name_m]Luke[/name_m]'s mom was lying and to just tell her his name was [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] already.
Some people are just losers, hahaha! I think everybody will face name grief like that every now and then, but if you love the name, I would go for it. It’s quite handsome.
My brother is called [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and nobody has ever assumed he’s a [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]. [name_m]Luke[/name_m] is a full name in its own right
I wouldn’t assume [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] either. I might ask if it was short for anything, but only out of curiosity - not because I assumed it was.
As a teacher, I have had multiple students named [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]. Most of the [name_m]Lukes[/name_m] had [name_m]Luke[/name_m] as their full name, and most of the [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]’ didn’t go by [name_m]Luke[/name_m]. Some may assume, but if you only introduce him as [name_m]Luke[/name_m], people probably will just go with it.
I have a cousin named [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and he gets mistaken for [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] occasionally, but not all that often. [name_m]Luke[/name_m] is a fine name by itself.
I have known several [name_m]Lukes[/name_m] and I do not recall anyone thinking any of their names were [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]. [name_m]Luke[/name_m] is a strong, handsome boy name.
I’ve never met a [name_m]Lucas[/name_m], but I know a couple of [name_m]Lukes[/name_m]. I also prefer [name_m]Luke[/name_m]. Maybe it’s because I’ve never met one, but I wouldn’t assume [name_m]Luke[/name_m] was [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] - I would probably be surprised if he was.
Yes i agree with this. [name_m]Luke[/name_m] is [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] is [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]. I have never met a [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] thats nick named [name_m]Luke[/name_m], and vise-versa.
My daughter is friends with a boy called [name_m]Luke[/name_m]. I’ve never heard his mother call him [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] so I assume his full name is [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and have always called him by that. I’ve never heard anyone else call him otherwise. I think some names, like [name_m]Mike[/name_m] or [name_m]Tom[/name_m], you assume are short for [name_m]Michael[/name_m] & [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. Other names, like [name_m]Jake[/name_m] or [name_m]Luke[/name_m], might be [name_m]Jacob[/name_m] or [name_m]Lucas[/name_m], but maybe not, it’s not so easy to assume.
My question is, do you despise the name [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] so much that if you have a forgetful family member who always lengthens [name_m]Luke[/name_m]'s name to [name_m]Lucas[/name_m], you will be steaming mad or upset or distressed in any way? Cause if it’s like that maybe you should forget the name [name_m]Luke[/name_m]. But if you could brush off mistakes I say go for it.
My other suggestion is [name_u]Luca[/name_u]. But that might be too close to [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] for your liking?
[name_f]Every[/name_f] single [name_m]Luke[/name_m] I know and have heard of is just [name_m]Luke[/name_m] all the [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]'s I know are called [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]. I honestly don’t think it would be a problem.
I also prefer [name_m]Luke[/name_m]! I know a [name_m]Lukas[/name_m] and a [name_m]Luke[/name_m], [name_m]Lukas[/name_m] is always [name_m]Lukas[/name_m], and [name_m]Luke[/name_m] is always [name_m]Luke[/name_m]. I don’t think anyone’s asked [name_m]Luke[/name_m] if his real name’s [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] though, and no one’s called [name_m]Lukas[/name_m] by the name [name_m]Luke[/name_m] either (unless they’re just confusing the two children).
Same reason people assume Johns are Jonathans, I think. [name_m]Just[/name_m] being dumb.
I don’t see this as an issue at all. I knew plenty of [name_m]Luke[/name_m]‘s growing up and [name_m]Luke[/name_m] was their given name. I have only heard of more [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]’ recently with younger kids. If I met a [name_m]Luke[/name_m], I would just assume his name was [name_m]Luke[/name_m]. And even if I did in some way think his name was [name_m]Lucas[/name_m], if he told me he was [name_m]Luke[/name_m] then that’s what I would call him! For what it’s worth, I love [name_m]Luke[/name_m]! And not a fan of [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] at all either! Weird eh…names so similar but jst have a totally different feel to me!!
