Hilda, Hilde____?

Deleted personal info

[name]Love[/name], love, love Hildemara!! (it’s on my list!) I too really like the ild sound (love Casilda and Donelda, also kinda like Cloetilda) [name]Just[/name] [name]Hilda[/name] is pretty too, but I prefer it as a nn, not a full name. [name]Hilda[/name] as a nn for [name]Mathilda[/name] would work well too if that’s what you prefer. [name]Hilda[/name] is an adorable nickname or full name, I think it’s totally usable. I don’t find it any different than Peral, [name]Olive[/name], or [name]Matilda[/name] it terms of usability.

Yes, you are where I saw that one! Never heard of it before, but it’s apparently a real name?

What does anyone else think, is Hildemara soft and pretty enough to escape the clunky, giant-blonde-woman-in-braids images of [name]Hildegard[/name] and [name]Brunhilde[/name]? (I’m pretty sure those are what most Americans would picture anyway?)

Yes it’s a real name, it’s [name]German[/name] and means “Glorious” according to all the sourses I’ve found. I found it in a book and discovered it’s actually on most baby name sites, just not Nameberry :frowning:

I really like just [name]Hilda[/name]. Feels a bit vintage. I love the simplicity, and I love that it is recognizable but COMPLETELY unexpected on a child today.

I’ve never heard Hildemara before. I think it’s lovely!

I like it as a nn for [name]Mathilda[/name]. It’s a bit clunky so [name]Mathilda[/name] would be good because it’s just mainstream enough now to not seem odd to as many American ears, so if your little [name]Hilda[/name] was shy and felt like [name]Hilda[/name]/[name]Hildie[/name] attracted too many raised eyebrows she could fall back on [name]Mathilda[/name] or one of the other nn like [name]Tilly[/name], [name]Tilda[/name], [name]Millie[/name], [name]Mattie[/name], etc. at school. I’m a big fan of having options like that, especially if you’re worried about the reception of the name.

Hildemara I have never heard of…it’s pretty, the [name]Mara[/name] ending certainly softens it up a bit…I think I like it, assuming it is a real name. The unfamiliarity is my only real qualm about it…

[name]Even[/name] after arguing for [name]Mathilda[/name] because of its comfortable familiarity, I have to say that it would be fun to meet a little girl named [name]Hildegard[/name] or [name]Brunhilde[/name]…but I really hope she would be a bold little girl, because it will attract a lot of attention I’m sure! If I were choosing for myself, I’d choose [name]Mathilda[/name] by a landslide, but I’m not the gutsiest of folks.

I like just [name]Hilda[/name] by itself. [name]Hildegard[/name] and [name]Brunhilda[/name] seem a little clunky. [name]Mathilda[/name] does have more nickname options, but I don’t know, I feel like [name]Hilda[/name] is refreshingly simple.

@niftylavalamp, I think in reality I’m pretty close to you in terms of not being gutsy enough for actually naming a girl something like [name]Hildegard[/name]. Intensely [name]German[/name] names are definitely GP for me, and I love the way they sound, but probably couldn’t bring myself to do that to a little daughter. Plus, DH would never go for it! You might be right about [name]Mathilda[/name] being the more truly usable option in today’s US. And, I know [name]Mathilda[/name] isn’t half as popular in the US than in the UK…but we live and travel internationally, where there are a lot of Brits running around, so that makes like it less.

Those who’ve said that [name]Hilda[/name] alone might be very usable may also be right. I tend to like longer names with shorter, cute nns, but maybe I just need to let that go? Also, I prefer the more Germanic [name]Hilde[/name] spelling, but still pronounced [name]Hil[/name]-duh…would that just be confusing amongst English speakers? Would people tend to say “hild” or “hild-ee”? I don’t mind the second one, but “hild” isn’t cute!

You could just do [name]Hilda[/name] or [name]Hildie[/name], but there are a lot of words you could stick on the end of [name]Hilde[/name]. I’m with you when you say you like the more traditional [name]Hilde[/name]; I know its pronounced Hild-ah, but then again I’m very familiar with Germanic and Scandinavian names.

I had actually thought of the name Wildebriar some months ago; I really like it, but Hildebriar sounds kind of cool.
