His surprise pick: Guthrie

My fiance is in love with the name [name]Guthrie[/name]. I love it too, but I have a couple of concerns.

  1. My BFF has a boy named [name]Arlo[/name]. Is that weird? We are in constant contact, but we don’t see each other too often.

  2. Does it go with big brother [name]Ephraim[/name] [name]Joseph[/name]?

  3. He really fell in love with the middle name [name]Alfred[/name] (swoon), until we realized his initials would be G.A.S. um… no.

So what do you think of the name [name]Guthrie[/name] and what middle name suggestions do you have?

Thanks for your help!

[name]Love[/name] that name! I think it goes great with [name]Ephraim[/name].

Honestly I am not aware of the [name]Guthrie[/name] and [name]Arlo[/name] thing. I have never head of that before.

I wanted to use an S middle name for my little Anevay but then her initials would have been ASS. :frowning: And Anevay [name]Susan[/name] (after hubby’s grandmother) or Anevay Solace would have been soooooooooooooooo pretty. She ended up being Anevay [name]Jessamine[/name].

We have a theater where I live called The [name]Guthrie[/name], so it’s a no for me!

Wait, you’ve never heard of [name]Arlo[/name] [name]Guthrie[/name]?

OP, 1. I love the name [name]Guthrie[/name]. It’s unique without being too far out there. I think you need not worry about the bff thing, especially if you don’t see each other often. It’s not like you are naming a sibset [name]Arlo[/name] and [name]Guthrie[/name]. 2. I think it fits well with [name]Ephraim[/name]. 3. Is there a special relative you could honor with a middle name?
Good luck with your decision! Also, try the baby names board over on the bump for more feedback. http://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/4852107/ShowForum.aspx

I really Like [name]Guthrie[/name] and it makes a good sibset with [name]Ephraim[/name]. I don’t know what the problem would be with [name]Arlo[/name]. For middles, [name]How[/name] about:

Gutherie [name]James[/name] S
Gutherie [name]Rowan[/name] S
Gutherie [name]Adam[/name] S
Gutherie [name]Monroe[/name] S

Gutherie [name]Dixon[/name] S
Gutherie [name]Fredric[/name] S
Gutherie [name]Henric[/name] S

Gutherie [name]William[/name] S
Gutherie [name]Walter[/name] S
Gutherie [name]Wallace[/name] S
Gutherie [name]Winston[/name] S
Gutherie [name]Laurence[/name] S

[name]Woody[/name] [name]Guthrie[/name]'s son, [name]Arlo[/name], is also a famous folk singer.

Ooh, [name]Guthrie[/name]! I like it a lot.

  1. Well, [name]Arlo[/name] [name]Guthrie[/name] is probably the main association for both [name]Arlo[/name] and [name]Guthrie[/name], so it might be a little weird when you get both boys together. Since that won’t happen often, though, I don’t think it’s reason enough to pass on [name]Guthrie[/name]. I guess it just depends on whether you (and your friend, maybe?) are going to feel strange about your sons’ names having that connection.

  2. [name]Guthrie[/name] and [name]Ephraim[/name] sound great together, both sharing the same sort of folksy, laid-back charm.

  3. Yeah, GAS is a no-go. Perhaps something biblical to tie in with [name]Ephraim[/name] [name]Joseph[/name]? [name]Guthrie[/name] [name]Caleb[/name], [name]Guthrie[/name] [name]Tobias[/name], [name]Guthrie[/name] [name]Luke[/name]?

I don’t think the [name]Arlo[/name] [name]Guthrie[/name] connection is an issue at all. [name]Guthrie[/name] is a refreshing choice. I like the idea of something Biblical to tie in with [name]Ephraim[/name], as goodhope suggested. [name]Guthrie[/name] [name]Isaiah[/name], [name]Guthrie[/name] [name]Isaac[/name], [name]Guthrie[/name] [name]Jabez[/name], [name]Guthrie[/name] [name]Solomon[/name], [name]Guthrie[/name] [name]Malachi[/name], [name]Guthrie[/name] [name]John[/name]?

I’m not personally a fan but, [name]Guthrie[/name] isn’t a bad name. I think the [name]Arlo[/name] connection is fine.

A few suggestions for middles.

[name]Verner[/name]
[name]George[/name]
Eguene
[name]Walter[/name]
[name]Clarence[/name]
[name]Willard[/name]
[name]Gilbert[/name]
[name]Edmund[/name]

Good [name]Luck[/name]! (:

I like [name]Guthrie[/name]. [name]Don[/name]'t think it’s a problem with your friends son being called [name]Arlo[/name]. (not many people now days know the singer - although I do).

[name]Shame[/name] about the initials because [name]Alfred[/name] is so sweet.

I like the suggestions of something biblical - to tie in with your other son’s name.

The only way people recognize the name [name]Guthrie[/name] as being a name is via the singers, [name]Woody[/name] and [name]Arlo[/name]. It’s not like, say, [name]Michael[/name] ([name]Jackson[/name]) or [name]Mariah[/name] ([name]Carey[/name]), where the names have loads of other associations. So yes, when little [name]Guthrie[/name] and little [name]Arlo[/name] hang out, the connection will be automatic.

I think [name]Ephraim[/name] and [name]Guthrie[/name] complement each other in style. I do think [name]Ephraim[/name] is a lot smoother and easier on the ears ([name]Guthrie[/name] starts with a rather harsh guttural ‘guuuth’). Maybe the phonetics coupled with your BFF’s little boy mean you should keep looking? [name]Yu[/name] could salvage lovely [name]Alfred[/name], too if you went with [name]Winston[/name] or [name]Laramie[/name] or [name]Jonas[/name] or something instead.

This is funny because I’m in the exact same situation! My SO loves [name]Guthrie[/name] and two of my best friends have Arlos! What’s worse, I suggested [name]Arlo[/name] to each of them (they don’t know each other). I only see them a couple tomes a year, but I think it would be odd. Especially since none of us are particularly big fans of [name]Arlo[/name] [name]Guthrie[/name]. We all love woody, though.

[name]Alfred[/name] is a wonderful choice, what about [name]Alfred[/name] [name]Guthrie[/name]?

Thanks for the advice, all!
