So I”ve been name stalking all you berries for longer then I”d like to admit” My husband and I are TTC our first, and are having a hard time matching our naming style to our last name. We are Hispanic with the last name Gonzalez.
We are currently loving names that are classic but a little uncommon such as:
[name]Ezra[/name], [name]Silas[/name], [name]Everett[/name], [name]Rowan[/name], [name]Liam[/name], [name]Hugo[/name], [name]Penelope[/name], [name]Calliope[/name], [name]Eliza[/name], [name]Jillian[/name]
[name]Kate[/name], [name]Quinn[/name], and [name]James[/name] I like for middles.
However we are feeling a little pressure to lean toward Hispanic names, though neither of us was passed on the language”? Also, Would it be wrong to pass on my maiden name (also Hispanic) as a middle name if only to one child?
We would love any new suggestions or combinations that might flow well with our Hispanic Last name, to help us get on track with the naming adventure we hope to soon be on.
Thanks for reading, hope it made some kind of sense.
I don’t think you have to choose Spanish names just because you have a Hispanic last name. I know several people who have Hispanic surnames and very non-Latin first names. I also don’t see anything wrong with using your maiden name as a middle name for just one child. (Actually, I think it would be kind of boring if you used it as the middle name for all of your children)
As for combos (using the names you listed)
[name]Everett[/name] [name]James[/name]
[name]Ezra[/name] [name]James[/name]
[name]Penelope[/name] [name]Kate[/name]
[name]Ezra[/name] [name]Quinn[/name] (wasn’t sure if you liked [name]Quinn[/name] on a boy or girl, so I used it for both)
[name]Eliza[/name] [name]Quinn[/name]
[name]Rowan[/name] [name]James[/name]
[name]Silas[/name] [name]Quinn[/name]
Besides [name]Julia[/name] and [name]Rosa[/name], I’m sure there are a ton of Spanish names that you could use. If you feel like using [name]Charles[/name] instead of [name]Carlos[/name] or [name]Peter[/name] over [name]Pedro[/name], go for it. You don’t have to be limited by your last name’s origins. Btw, celebs are co-oping Spanish surnames like [name]Cruz[/name] ([name]Victoria[/name] and [name]David[/name] [name]Beckham[/name]'s son). Using your maiden name as a middle name even for just your first born seems fine. I’m curious to know what it is or at least the first initial and how many syllables. With a three-syllable last name, it seems rhythmically best to go with a 2-1-3 count for the whole name whereby two-syllable first names (easy to find) and 1 syllable middle names.
I have my mother’s maiden name as a middle and I love it, so I say go for it.
You don’t have to choose a hispanic first name to fit Gonzalez, although I think there are a lot of beautiful Spanish names (especially girls) that work well in English.
Its not really that I feel I have no other option but to use a spanish name, but I feel like my favorites are all have a different feel, Spanish names are very flowy and roll right into my last name, and names I like are kind of abrupt in sound, and are feeling a little more forced. I guess I’m looking for that name thats a happy medium between the two.
I agree with the 2-1-3 combo for so that kicks penelope, calliope, and [name]Jillian[/name] to the curb, maybe even eliza…hmm…I thought girls would be the easy name to come up with.
Last names and all the above aside, if you saw a girl with dark curls, green eyes, light olive complexion, maybe a little chubby…what would you think her name was?
I see what you mean. [name]Both[/name] of my parents were raised in Hispanic countries, and while I was passed on the language and much of the culture, I feel very American. I think it depends on how much of a connection you feel to your culture and how much you want to pass it on. You don’t know what your child’s personality is. They might embrace the Hispanic culture or they will want to fit in. I think by naming them one or the other you are nudging them in a certain direction, even if subconsciously so. Maybe you can go somewhere in between? Like name them [name]Guillermo[/name] and call them [name]Liam[/name] as a nickname. And I don’t think there’s any problem with you passing on your maiden name to just one child. There are many beautiful names that work both in Spanish and in English. Suggestions:
Personally I love Spanish first names with Spanish last names but that’s just my preference. [name]Penelope[/name], [name]Hugo[/name] and [name]Eliza[/name] would be the best options on your list. There are less frilly, 2-syllable Spanish names like…

[name]Hope[/name] you like one of these names. All the best!
I understand what you are saying. I actually know a Hispanic boy named [name]Everett[/name], so [name]Everett[/name] Gonzalez sounds really good to me. [name]Hugo[/name] Gonzalez also flows really well. [name]Penelope[/name] Gonzalez is on the longer side, but with a nn like [name]Penny[/name] it could work.
Others:
[name]Lina[/name] Gonzalez
[name]Cora[/name] Gonzolez
[name]Ruby[/name] Gonzalez
[name]Scarlett[/name] Gonlalez
[name]Willa[/name] Gonzalez
[name]Delia[/name] Gonzalez
[name]Mara[/name] Gonzalez
[name]Maia[/name] Gonzalez
[name]Ivy[/name] Gonzalez- This is my favorite
[name]Laurel[/name] Gonzalez
I don’t think you have to use a Hispanic first name. It would be a nice way to represent your heritage, as would using your maiden name. I’ve asked myself the same question, would it be wrong to use my maiden name for only one child? In my opinion, the answer is no. It makes sense to give it to one child, (or all, as I’ve seen before too) but usually it would be the first born to get the “privilage”. Also, if that doesn’t appeal to you and you had more than one child, you could use your maiden name as a second middle name for all of the children- that’s also a nice connection between siblings. (Ex. [name]Liam[/name] [name]James[/name] Martinez Gonzalez, and sister [name]Eliza[/name] [name]Kate[/name] Martinez Gonzalez) But, be careful with the syllable count when using two middle names! There are many names that are used in Hispanic countries and in English speaking ones, and that would make a really good choice- you get the best of both worlds

What do you think of [name]Desmond[/name]…nn [name]Desi[/name]… too “I love lucy”?
I am liking [name]Ezra[/name] and [name]Hugo[/name]. Not so much [name]Arlo[/name] though. To me, it sounds like a dog name. But I love [name]Isaac[/name]! It is my ultimate favorite boys’ name so maybe I am a bit biased. But I still think it’s a strong, handsome name.
I like [name]Lucia[/name] nn [name]Lucy[/name]. That’s sweet. Only thing is, [name]Lucy[/name] is rather popular.
[name]Desmond[/name] is okay. I don’t know, just not feeling it.
I love all the names on your boys list. My favorite is probably [name]Desmond[/name], its so handsome and sophisticated. I wouldnt worry about the [name]Penny[/name] [name]Denny[/name] thing at all. If you love [name]Penelope[/name] I think you should use it. [name]Penelope[/name] and [name]Desmond[/name] would make an amazing sibset also.
