Hjordis

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]!
I was hoping that you could help me out
hWhen I was four years old I promised all of my greatgrandmothers that I´d name my daughters after them, a promise I´d like to keep. The names are; [name_f]Elvira[/name_f], Alvilda, [name_f]Simona[/name_f] and Hjørdis…the only problem is Hjørdis, my fiancee is American so a name that is possible for him to pronounce right, is a must. So I was hoping that you could help me out with a name to honor her? (on a site note, my greatgrandfathers were; [name_m]Jens[/name_m], [name_m]Hans[/name_m], [name_m]Johannes[/name_m], and [name_m]Arne[/name_m])
Thank you!

Wow! What a name. Jordis, maybe? Something with the same meaning, another sword name? [name_f]Brenda[/name_f], [name_f]Brenna[/name_f]. Um, [name_f]Saskia[/name_f]? I think that’s actually knife though. Similar, a blade. I think it’s great, and would be fine in the middle. Otherwise, something she loved, or her middle name.

Its pronounced similar to Jordis. Her middle name is [name_f]Maria[/name_f], as were [name_f]Elvira[/name_f] and [name_f]Simona[/name_f]´s, not very creative hehe.

Not very creative, no, but [name_f]Maria[/name_f] is lovely. If it were me, I’d put it in the middle. I’m American and I can say it, although probably not perfectly. I do also speak Spanish though, so I’m very used to H being pretty much silent, and J not having a hard sound. More of a short (almost silent) h sound (sort of like the h in whisper) followed by a y (as in yellow) sound? That’s how I’m saying it without looking up a pronunciation guide. If you’re in the US, I’d probably go for Hjordis (not Hjørdis) or Jordis.

In fact, I’m sort of falling in love with Hjørdis. Have you talked it over with him?

I think Hjordis could work (just don’t use the Ø, foreign letters always mess people up), perhaps even it a little out with a more neutral middle?

I love Alvilda and [name_f]Elvira[/name_f] is my own middle name. Are you, by any chance, Danish? Because all of those name, with the exception of [name_f]Simona[/name_f], are Danish (or Danish-sounding, at least).

Thank you for the comments! No,I haven´t talked to him about the name being a possible future baby, but he had a lot of trouble pronouncing it. [name_f]Maria[/name_f] is lovely, and something I have thought about since I´d be honoring so many women in my family with just a single name. Im not sure as to how to explain the pronounciation. It is a beautiful name, and has nothing but great connections for me, and she is my only living greatgrandmother and the one whos always been there for me so Id love to use her name, just have to think how. No, I am not Danish, I am Faroese, but we do belong to the Danish Crown. The names are all Faroese, though Alvilda is not a legal name, it was used before the name list we have came into use. Which is probably a good thing considering my greatgreatgrandmother was named Vagina (pronounced VaG (Hard G sound)-in)

i love this name!

i think Jordis is easily pronounceable for Americans and i would totally use it if i had that name in my family. if you wanted it to be closer to the original pronunciation (?), you could go with Yordis (though i personally dislike respellings with Y). if you kept the H in the beginning, i could imagine people having issues pronouncing that.

another option would be to honor your great-grandmother in a different way… e.g. is the town she is from possibly usable as a name? or a mountain, meadow, bay she lived close to?

I really like the name Hjordis.
I agree with Jordis as an honor name. Maybe even [name_m]Jordi[/name_m] or [name_f]Jordana[/name_f]

I think I´ll use the Hjordis, if I end up using it, since Jordis makes me want to pronounce it in a very weird way, but thats just me. I agree on the Yordis part. The naming after a meadow or village would also be a problem since its Faroese place names (think Icelandic) so that wouldn´t work too well. Would Brynja be a way of honoring her? keeping the whole armour feel since Hjordis means sword (or was it battle?) Thank you for all the comments! They are really helpful
