Hockey

Hey! I have a question for all, my bf and I are huge hockey fans and we were wondering some hockey inspired names, we were just curious as to what people could come up with.

All we could think of was [name_u]Stanley[/name_u]!

As a Canadian, I’ll include the Canadian stars I know of.

Boys: [name_u]Stanley[/name_u], [name_m]Don[/name_m], [name_m]Wayne[/name_m] (I live in [name_m]Wayne[/name_m] Gretzky’s hometown), [name_u]Sidney[/name_u], [name_m]Crosby[/name_m], [name_m]Adam[/name_m], [name_u]Darcy[/name_u], Tie, [name_m]Mats[/name_m], [name_u]Bobby[/name_u], [name_u]Maurice[/name_u], [name_m]Richard[/name_m], [name_m]Patrick[/name_m], [name_m]Mario[/name_m], [name_m]Jerome[/name_m]

Girls: [name_f]Hayley[/name_f], [name_f]Cherry[/name_f], [name_u]Sydney[/name_u], [name_u]Darcy[/name_u], Jayna, [name_f]Caroline[/name_f],

Sorry I couldn’t be of much help!

Oh no you helped more than you think. You are from [name_f]Canada[/name_f] where hockey is so popular! Thanks

In addition to [name_u]Stanley[/name_u], there’s also [name_m]Preston[/name_m], as the [name_u]Stanley[/name_u] Cup came from [name_m]Lord[/name_m] [name_u]Stanley[/name_u] of [name_m]Preston[/name_m].

Hockey’s origins are disputed. Montreal, QC, [name_m]Kingston[/name_m], ON, and [name_u]Windsor[/name_u], NS, all claim to have been the site of the first game. I can’t get behind naming a kid Montreal, but maybe [name_m]Kingston[/name_m] or [name_u]Windsor[/name_u] could be options.

As [name_f]Hayley[/name_f] mentioned, there’s also the possibility of using the name of a star. In addition to her suggestions, I’ll put forward [name_u]Bobby[/name_u] (Hull and Orr), [name_m]Gordie[/name_m] ([name_m]Howe[/name_m]), [name_u]Maurice[/name_u] ([name_m]Richard[/name_m]), [name_m]Mark[/name_m] (Messier), and [name_m]Eric[/name_m] (Lindros).

I just read on Wikipedia that the first organized hockey game was played at [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] Skating Rink in Montreal, so [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] could be a hockey inspired name too!

Hmmm, maybe it’s time for a [name_u]Stanley[/name_u] Cup inspired blog post?

I would love to name my son [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] Tuukka Lastname; Tuukka Rask is one of my favourite players, sand definitely has the coolest name of any hockey player I can think of.

I honestly think looking for one hockey inspired name is too broad. It’d make more sense (to me anyway) to go for team history or personal heroes or something, rather than just hockey in general.

If you want it to be obvious [name_m]Crosby[/name_m] would be a great one. I’m from Vancouver & lots of kids are named after hockey players. [name_u]Linden[/name_u] is particularly popular.

I like [name_m]Henrik[/name_m] (as in [name_m]Henrik[/name_m] Sedin)

[name_u]Puck[/name_u]?

giggles

I can almost guarantee that the first game was played in Montreal, not [name_u]Windsor[/name_u] or [name_m]Kingston[/name_m]. Montreal was one of the original 6 teams in the NHL, so it would make sense for the game to be played there. [name_u]Bobby[/name_u] Orr Number Four was one of the most famous hockey players. You could also just google Best Hockey Players of all time NHL Hockey Players - Google Search
and see these names. Or you could google Canadian Women’s Hockey Team Canada women's national ice hockey team - Wikipedia , scroll down a bit and see which women played in the Sochi Olympics on the team. Or whatever country you’re from.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] that helped!

[name_u]Easton[/name_u]
[name_m]Bauer[/name_m]
[name_u]Sidney[/name_u]
[name_m]Crosby[/name_m]
[name_u]Alex[/name_u]
[name_u]Bobby[/name_u]
[name_f]Hattie[/name_f] ([name_f]Hat[/name_f] trick)
[name_m]Wilder[/name_m] (mn wild)

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] that helps.

Ack, no. PLEASE NOT [name_m]CROSBY[/name_m]! I cannot STAND him!

[name_u]Easton[/name_u] was a huge favorite of mine until it became super trendy.

If I ever felt the desire to name a child after a hockey great, I’d name the baby after one of my all time favorite players, or someone who helped shape hockey.

The Bleacher Report has an article on the 50 most influential people in NHL history. Ranking the 50 Most Influential People in NHL History | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors | Bleacher Report

Emrick/[name_m]Emmerich[/name_m] would be pretty cool ([name_m]Mike[/name_m] Emrick is “just” a broadcaster)

As a [name_m]Detroit[/name_m] fan, I’d consider using one of these (whether it be their first name or last name):
[name_m]Ted[/name_m]/[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_u]Lindsay[/name_u]
[name_m]Gordie[/name_m] [name_m]Howe[/name_m]
[name_u]Scotty[/name_u] [name_m]Bowman[/name_m]
[name_m]Steve[/name_m] Yzerman
[name_m]Luc[/name_m] Robataille

[name_u]True[/name_u], but the reason I mentioned [name_m]Kingston[/name_m] is there is a plaque there that claims it’s the site of the first hockey game. [name_m]Kingston[/name_m] also makes a better name that Montreal.

From Wiki:

Although contested, [name_m]Kingston[/name_m] lays claim to being the birthplace of ice hockey. This is supported by a journal entry of a British [name_m]Army[/name_m] officer in [name_m]Kingston[/name_m] in 1843. He wrote “Began to skate this year, improved quickly and had great fun at hockey on the ice.”. [name_m]Kingston[/name_m] is also home to the oldest continuing hockey rivalry in the world by virtue of a game played in 1886 on the frozen [name_m]Kingston[/name_m] harbour between [name_f]Queen[/name_f]'s University and the [name_m]Royal[/name_m] Military College of [name_f]Canada[/name_f].

The Memorial Cup, which serves as the annual championship event for the Canadian Hockey League, began in 1919 on the initiative of Kingstonian [name_u]James[/name_u] T. Sutherland. The first championship was held in [name_m]Kingston[/name_m].

I am loving this thread. Hockey is such a part of our lives here in small town [name_f]Canada[/name_f]. [name_m]Alexandre[/name_m] is a good hockey name if we are going with Vancouver Canucks. I am more of a Canadians fan why not PK, [name_m]Marc[/name_m]-[name_u]Andre[/name_u], or [name_u]Maurice[/name_u] or [name_m]Guy[/name_m].

Perhaps you can find some inspiration from other hockey trophies and awards that are presented.

[name_u]Calder[/name_u]
[name_u]Conn[/name_u] [name_m]Smyth[/name_m]
[name_m]Hart[/name_m]
Lady Byng
[name_m]Art[/name_m] [name_m]Ross[/name_m]
[name_m]King[/name_m] [name_u]Clancy[/name_u]
Vezina
[name_m]Frank[/name_m] Selke
[name_m]William[/name_m] [name_m]Jennings[/name_m]
[name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_m]Adams[/name_m]
[name_m]Ted[/name_m] [name_u]Lindsay[/name_u]
[name_u]James[/name_u] [name_u]Norris[/name_u]
[name_m]Clarence[/name_m] [name_u]Campbell[/name_u]
[name_u]Maurice[/name_u] “[name_m]Rocket[/name_m]” [name_m]Richard[/name_m]

We named our son [name_u]Calder[/name_u] for the hockey references and also because we like the artist [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_u]Calder[/name_u].

I think Gretzky could be a cool hockey name too…

Oh boy! As a hockey player, coach, and rabid Blackhawks fan, this is right up my alley!

Sorry in advance for any repeats…

The obvious names would be [name_u]Stanley[/name_u], [name_u]Calder[/name_u], [name_u]Easton[/name_u] and [name_m]Bauer[/name_m]. Or Zamboni, [name_m]Trip[/name_m], or Slash… just kidding

A lot of [name_m]French[/name_m] Canadian names would be suitable, along with almost any European player’s name (think [name_u]Sweden[/name_u], Finland, [name_f]Russia[/name_f], Slovakia etc) do you or your other half have any heritage to those countries? if so, that would be an added bonus! A lot of these names can be translated or spelled a more common ‘English’ way. Think Niklas, [name_m]Henrik[/name_m], [name_m]Luc[/name_m], [name_m]Tomas[/name_m], [name_u]Michal[/name_u], [name_m]Nikolai[/name_m], [name_m]Aleksandr[/name_m], [name_u]Patrice[/name_u], [name_u]Simone[/name_u] etc

Some more common names would be [name_m]Wayne[/name_m], [name_u]Sidney[/name_u] (what a crybaby), [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], [name_m]Patrick[/name_m], [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m]… Also look at surnames such as [name_m]Kane[/name_m] or [name_u]Emery[/name_u]. Those could easily be used as a first name

If you love the movie [name_f]Miracle[/name_f], you could use the name [name_m]Brooks[/name_m] after who other than the historic USA coach [name_m]Herb[/name_m] [name_m]Brooks[/name_m] (or penguins’ player [name_m]Brooks[/name_m] Orpik)

Maybe your team’s hometown can be used for a name. For example, if you’re a Nashville Predators fan, you could use the name [name_m]Nash[/name_m]!

For girls I thought of [name_f]Cammi[/name_f] Granato right away

There’s such a wide variety with there being so many players and with players being from all over the world. I think your best bet would be to go through your favorite team’s roster or making a list of your favorite hockey idols.

For what it’s worth, I personally love [name_u]Cam[/name_u] ([name_u]Cameron[/name_u] or [name_u]Camden[/name_u]) it just sounds so hockey to me. Think [name_u]Cam[/name_u] [name_u]Neely[/name_u], [name_u]Cam[/name_u] [name_m]Fowler[/name_m], [name_u]Cam[/name_u] [name_m]Barker[/name_m]

Who is your favorite team?

Whatever you do, don’t name him after [name_m]Raffi[/name_m] Torres. What a goon haha

If you watch college hockey, you could use [name_m]Hobey[/name_m] after the award for the best player and great player back in the day.

I just wanted to say a profound thank you to the person who wrote this post. When I first met my hockey loving now husband he already had a sons name picked out. [name_m]Bauer[/name_m]! Luckily I loved it, it was short uncommon and strong. When we found out we were having a daughter first I was so excited, I can remember when they first told us it was a girl being so relieved that I would never be one of those women that had 3 boys and always ached for a little girl. It didn’t occur to that I would be at my third ultrasound finding out yet again that we were having a girl (our 3rd girl and final child) and I would be horribly deflated to know not only would I never have a chubby faced little version of my husband but I felt like I had let my husband down. His dreams of little baby [name_m]Bauer[/name_m] were gone, even if we tried again it was still at best a 50/50 we would have a boy. So that night I started scouring the Internet for a baby name (our first two girls were named after family members) something hockey related to maybe give my husband a bit of [name_m]Bauer[/name_m] back (many friends suggested using [name_m]Bauer[/name_m] for our 3rd girl but everything I liked about it I hated for a girl). I came across your post which had better ideas then naming after players (a practice I hate, like loving music so naming child after one musician) and saw [name_f]Hattie[/name_f]. Like hat trick or 3 goals, I said it out loud to my husband our 3rd girl being named hattie, our hat trick… we both literally laughed out loud and then I paused and said “well I actually like it” and he said “me too its pretty, cute, and witty.” And that was that, our little girl [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] is due in [name_u]January[/name_u] and I don’t think my husband could be happier! For us it was a simple nod to his love of hockey (both watching and playing) that took away the sting of never getting our little boy [name_m]Bauer[/name_m].

[name_f]Hattie[/name_f] for a third girl is so freakin’ cute! [name_u]Love[/name_u] it!
