Home sick and dreaming of names...Candela

Hello ladies, I’ve been freed…I mean, sent home from school because I got sick. Now I’m relaxing on the coach with my cat on my lap, soothing my ill mind with some names. The following are in the running to be added to my list. I’d love to hear your thoughts on each, as well as your thoughts on my thoughts.

[name_u]Adair[/name_u] - it’s my Mom’s middle name, and I never really gave it much thought. It’s very strong and mysterious though.
[name_f]Carlotta[/name_f] - I like the spunky sound and nickname [name_f]Carly[/name_f]. [name_f]Lotty[/name_f] would also work. Feels underused nonetheless…
[name_f]Carolina[/name_f] - pronounce with a long i. Reminds of of [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_f]Carolina[/name_f], my fave place to vacation.
[name_f]Eira[/name_f] - I love the pronunciation and the meaning “snow”. But it doesn’t feel as snowy as just using [name_f]Snow[/name_f]…
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] - I’ve heard some say that this would be prn with a z sound, not an s sound. I want the s sound though.
[name_f]Marie[/name_f] - I dread [name_f]Marie[/name_f] as a middle, but think it’s very sweet as a first. Too dated or old? Like the only [name_f]Maries[/name_f] I know are middle age…
[name_f]Oceana[/name_f] - would you prn it like [name_f]Anna[/name_f] or [name_f]Ana[/name_f]? could I get away with the [name_f]Anna[/name_f] prn w/o spelling it [name_f]Oceanna[/name_f]? I love how beachy it is.
[name_f]Antigone[/name_f] - I love this as an obscure and rare route to nn [name_f]Annie[/name_f]. I love the idea of a common nickname with an unexpected formal name. But then there’s the tragic play. Not exactly a heartwarming tale.
[name_f]Aislinn[/name_f] - I have no love for the phonetic spelling, which is ironic since I’m still not sure how this is properly pronounced. Is there really supposed to be a soft g at the end? I was hoping it was prn just like [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f]. I love the meaning “dream” too.
[name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f] - I love [name_f]Rose[/name_f], and I love [name_f]Marie[/name_f]. This seems a natural combination. I like the nicknames as well.
[name_f]Candela[/name_f] - wild card, I know. Maybe it’s not even a proper name, but we learned in chemistry that the [name_u]SI[/name_u] unit to measure luminosity. I think Candle would be a cute pet name, and Dela a nice nickname. WDYT?
[name_f]Icy[/name_f] - also a wild card, I’ve seen someone else with this in their signature. (hanbow!). It’s a neat idea, but I was thinking it’d be a cute nickname. What could it stand for?
[name_f]Maven[/name_f] - the meaning it awesome, and it bears such close resemblance to my other favorite, [name_u]Haven[/name_u], so I don’t know why it took me so long to find it.

Edit: I’d like to add Saylor. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not just a kre8tive spelling of Sailor. It’s actually a legit surname, and I just found out it’s also my great grandfather’s middle name, which gives it a better platform.

thanks guys! I’m gonna make some cocoa and take a nap…

Love Adair, Carolina, Louisa and Marie.

My favorite is Marie. I agree with you on it being boring in the mn spot…but perfectly unexpected and vibrant in the fn spot. Sweet and feminine, but not frilly. Perfect in my opinion.

Adair is quite nice, different, but not too obscure. I believe that it is also a place in Ireland near the sea (or maybe that is spelled Adare). I LOVE that it is your mother’s middle name. Family names are a huge plus in my book.

Carolina is frillier than the other names on your list that I like, but I like that it is uncommon, but known. I also love that it has meaning to you.

Louisa–I believe that you will more often get the s sound than the z sound…though both will happen. I would imagine the pronunciation is geographical in nature. Though people will follow your lead on pronunciation. It is a lovely name which reminds me of one of my favorite movies, ‘The Sound of Music’. Short and spunky and completely underused. It is a winner.

Aislinn I believe in pronounced Ashlyn. I like the sound. I don’t like how the spelling will ultimately be butchered so very many times, unless you live in Great Britain.

Carlotta is fine.
Rosemarie is too…but I prefer both Rose and Marie on their own.
Candela. Don’t love, at all. Feels too nouny.
Don’t love maven.
Don’t love icy as a nn or name.
Antigone is not my style at all…though I love Annie! And if you were to exclusively call her Annie, Antigone could work. I prefer Julianne or Susannah as a name for the nn Annie. Honestly, I love Annie on it’s own.
Eira and snow are not my style, though I love the name Winter with the nn Winnie which as the similar feel as Annie. I love the similar Erin as well. Underused, known and not dated…a perfect recipe for a name.
Oceana. Not my style. I would pronounce it with Anna at the end…but I think that is because i am a huge ‘LOST’ fan, and they reference the airline ‘Oceana’ often. If I didn’t know that however, I believe I would be inclined to say the ‘ah-nuh’ pronunciation since most names with Ana in them are pronounced that way.

Feel better!

[name_f]Ana[/name_f]: Thanks! I like [name_u]Julianne[/name_u] as well, and [name_u]Winter[/name_u] is also one of my faves! I didn’t even think of the SOM association with [name_f]Louisa[/name_f], but I love the musical so that’s a plus.

My opinion:
[name_u]Adair[/name_u] - Nah
[name_f]Carlotta[/name_f] -[name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] this so much [reminds me of the St Clares series
[name_f]Carolina[/name_f] -Like
[name_f]Eira[/name_f] - This feels snowy to me. I like it, I think.
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] - Not one of my favourites but it would be cute to meet a little [name_f]Louisa[/name_f].
[name_f]Marie[/name_f] -Ugh
[name_f]Oceana[/name_f] - [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] lovely. Please don’t spell it [name_f]Oceanna[/name_f] though as it looks kreyatif
[name_f]Antigone[/name_f] - Nah
[name_f]Aislinn[/name_f] -OK
[name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f] -Same as [name_f]Marie[/name_f]. If you have to, spell it [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f].
[name_f]Candela[/name_f] -Nah
[name_f]Icy[/name_f]-NO
[name_f]Maven[/name_f]-Never heard of this but it sounds pretty.

Have a good day off school [I call mine the ‘Slaughterhouse’] [name_f]Hope[/name_f] you get better soon!

Whirligig: Thanks! I really don’t like [name_f]Oceanna[/name_f] either, but I wasn’t sure how intuitive the prn would be. [name_f]Glad[/name_f] to know someone else likes [name_f]Carlotta[/name_f]. Good luck in the Slaughterhouse! lol.

[name_u]Adair[/name_u] - agree with you, this one is strong and mysterious.
[name_f]Carlotta[/name_f] - pretty and fresh, especially after all Charlottes.
[name_f]Carolina[/name_f] - really like this one.
[name_f]Eira[/name_f] - not as snowy, agreed. I like [name_f]Eira[/name_f] though.
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] - another pretty, underused classic. I always pronounce it with ‘s’.
[name_f]Marie[/name_f] - I adore [name_f]Marie[/name_f], especially this spelling.
[name_f]Oceana[/name_f] - not sure.
[name_f]Antigone[/name_f] - dislike, perhaps because the Anti- part. Or because I see it as two words (Anti+gone).
[name_f]Aislinn[/name_f] - I like it ([name_f]Aislinn[/name_f] and [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f], just not [name_u]Ashley[/name_u]). [name_f]Love[/name_f] the meaning.
[name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f] - okay.
[name_f]Candela[/name_f] - dislike.
[name_f]Icy[/name_f] - I think it’s cute. For Is- names maybe?
[name_f]Maven[/name_f] - I prefer [name_u]Haven[/name_u].
[name_u]Saylor[/name_u]- dislike, sorry.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] you get well soon.

I think in the USA, it would be pronounced a-shee-anna with that accent anyway.

[name_u]Adair[/name_u] - interesting. Not my style, but a bold choice.
[name_f]Carlotta[/name_f] - reminds me of the frivolous, unsensible character in Phantom of the [name_f]Opera[/name_f].
[name_f]Carolina[/name_f] - interesting name choice. Has a cute, prairie-Western kind of feel.
[name_f]Eira[/name_f] - never quite sure how to pronounce this name
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] - not my favorite name, but I love the [name_u]March[/name_u] sister vibe it has.
[name_f]Marie[/name_f] - frilly Southern granny on a rocking chair on the porch drinking iced tea.
[name_f]Oceana[/name_f] - prefer the [name_m]French[/name_m] [name_f]Oceane[/name_f].
[name_f]Antigone[/name_f] - I love this name, and almost feel it is spoiled a bit by the common nickname [name_f]Annie[/name_f]. The character in the play is tragic, yes, but also dynamic, strong and powerful in a time when women were considered property. I find this name a lot more attractive (in more ways than one) than [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], who is much less of a role model.
[name_f]Aislinn[/name_f] - a name I used to really love, but has been ruined by many bad fantasy novels. Plus, I thought that [name_f]Aisling[/name_f] was pronounced eyez-ling, and was actually disappointed that it has the trendy-sounding -lyn suffix.
[name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f] - another name I personally find too stuffy.
[name_f]Candela[/name_f] - cute sound, but weird name. Save for the middle or GP list.
[name_f]Icy[/name_f] - makes me think of someone with an aloof or unfriendly demeanor. Could be a nickname for [name_f]Isis[/name_f].
[name_f]Maven[/name_f] - meh. Not my style.

C@29: wow we must have similar taste! And thanks!
Whirli: I have to agree.
Bibliophile: I used to think that about [name_f]Aisling[/name_f] too. Oh, and I like [name_f]Isis[/name_f]!

My husband’s grandmother’s name was [name_f]Louisa[/name_f]. She pronounced it Loo-eye-za. I do not like that pronunciation with the long I sound, but I do like Loo-ee-za better than Loo-ee-sa. Anyway, I pronounce [name_f]Oceana[/name_f] as -[name_f]Anna[/name_f] naturally, so that prn works without having to add the extra n. I do think [name_f]Icy[/name_f] could make a big comeback. I know several in my grandmother’s generation. (She was born in 1920). However, her sister’s name is Pricy, and I just can’t get on board with that. And, it kind of makes [name_f]Icy[/name_f] unusable to me because my thoughts go to Pricy immediately. I think [name_u]Saylor[/name_u] is interesting and very useable, but I would prefer to see it on a boy.

Hixtwin: you have settled my fears on [name_f]Oceana[/name_f]. No spelling change needed. Wow, [name_f]Icy[/name_f] with a sister named Pricy? [name_m]Wild[/name_m] stuff. Oh, btw I love your daughters name. I’ve always had a soft spot for [name_u]Ember[/name_u]

Aww, feel better soon!

[name_u]Adair[/name_u]- works on both genders. sweet but not frilly
[name_f]Carlotta[/name_f]- sounds a bit clunky and off to me, like a cross between [name_f]Carol[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotta[/name_f]
[name_f]Carolina[/name_f]- I’d say it with a short I, but it can go either way. It’s a fresh take on a classic and I like that it has meaning to you
[name_f]Eira[/name_f]- delicate, fresh and prim. It seems more like a name than [name_f]Snow[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]- I say it with the Z sound because my friend [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] does, but either could work. A surprisingly rare classic, beautiful and girly and with lots of history
[name_f]Marie[/name_f]- I don’t find it dated or old, just a bit overused, but it’s sweet and pretty
[name_f]Oceana[/name_f]- I’d say it like [name_f]Anna[/name_f]. [name_f]Oceanna[/name_f] would work too, or [name_f]Oceania[/name_f] like the “continent”. A bit odd as a name though
[name_f]Antigone[/name_f]- spunky, rare, lots of history. I haven’t read the play but my friend who did said [name_f]Antigone[/name_f] is actually a great character- strong, stands up for what she thinks is right- so the fact that the play is tragic would be fine for me
[name_f]Aislinn[/name_f]- I say this like [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] too. [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] meaning and a great nod to [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] if your family is from there or if you just love Irish culture
[name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f]- sweet, demure, familiar but rare
[name_f]Candela[/name_f]- Not sure if this is an actual name either but I love the sound. it does sound warm and cozy like a Candle (such a cute nn!)
[name_f]Icy[/name_f]- I used to know an [name_f]Icy[/name_f] and she didn’t really have problems with her name. I wouldn’t use it myself but it’s interesting and fresh
[name_f]Maven[/name_f]- you’re right, this does have a cool meaning. modern and different
[name_u]Saylor[/name_u]- it reminds me of the word “sad” so not my thing, but I do think it can be used and the family connection is nice

My faves;

[name_f]Carlotta[/name_f] - I am [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] but the Spanish side of my family call me [name_f]Carlotta[/name_f]. I really like it (kind of wish it was my official name). My English family use [name_f]Lotty[/name_f] for my nickname.
[name_f]Eira[/name_f] - Really like this name and the meaning. My auntie is called [name_f]Eira[/name_f] so I can use it :frowning:
[name_f]Candela[/name_f] - It reminds me of the song “[name_f]Candela[/name_f]” by the [name_f]Buena[/name_f] Vista Social Club. I probably wouldn’t use it because my family speak Spanish where it means candle.
[name_f]Icy[/name_f] - I’m not keen on [name_f]Icy[/name_f], but my ex used to have the middle name Icylin which I thought was nice. Obviously I can’t use it now.

I don’t like [name_u]Saylor[/name_u] but I like [name_f]Selah[/name_f], it means ‘rock’ in Hebrew. It’s on my shortlist.

Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m]

Bonfire: thanks for the feedback! Feeling good about [name_f]Aislinn[/name_f]. Always nice to chat with u.
Miss trash: that’s cool that. [name_f]Carlotta[/name_f] is a variation of your name and that it’s ur nickname. The candela problem may affect me to, sadly, because I am learning Spanish and plan to learn it fluently someday. So that might be weird. Also, I love the [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in wonderland quote in your sig. I once had a quote from there in mine as well!

I love [name_f]Louisa[/name_f], [name_f]Eira[/name_f] (know a little one named this, it’s gorgeous and suits her wonderfully), [name_f]Aislinn[/name_f] is delightful, and I much prefer this or [name_f]Aisling[/name_f] to [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f]. I also love [name_u]Adair[/name_u].

Here’s what I picture a girl with my favourites off your list would look like:

[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] - strong spirited, free willed little girl with a creative mind and a passion for art, music and literature.
[name_u]Adair[/name_u] - a sweet, Scottish girl, with strawberry blonde hair and freckles, who loves being a tomboy and having a little adventure
[name_f]Eira[/name_f] - friendly with dark brown hair and ice blue eyes, a little girl who loves ice skating and catching snowflakes on her tongue
[name_f]Aislinn[/name_f]/[name_f]Aisling[/name_f](pronounced both [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] and [name_f]Ashling[/name_f]) - reddish hair with blue-green eyes, the popular girl in school. smart, creative and funny.
[name_f]Oceana[/name_f] - blonde hair with blue eyes and tanned skin, [name_f]Oceana[/name_f] would enjoy being outdoors and would love mythology.
[name_f]Carolina[/name_f] - loving and caring, with dark hair and pretty brown eyes, with a love of nature.

[name_u]Adair[/name_u] - I knew a boy when I was in school named [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] [name_u]Adair[/name_u] so I only see it as a surname myself, and on a boy. I realize that may just be due to my association with it though. Since it’s a family name that gives it some points but I just don’t care for it.
[name_f]Carlotta[/name_f] - Not my style but nice
[name_f]Carolina[/name_f] - I don’t like the [name_u]North[/name_u]/South [name_f]Carolina[/name_f] reference myself, makes me hate the name.
[name_f]Eira[/name_f] - While the meaning snow is nice I have no idea how to go about pronouncing this one.
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] - I say it with the s sound, never heard it sounding like a z, could just have to do with where you live I suppose. I like it.
[name_f]Marie[/name_f] - [name_f]Marie[/name_f] is nice but I just see it so much as a middle name as that is what it is popular for being mostly.
[name_f]Oceana[/name_f] - I pronounce it O-she-ana no matter how you spell it, though if you told me you said it differently i’d correct myself. I prefer it spelled [name_f]Oceania[/name_f] but find it a lovely name either way. It’s one of my favorites!
[name_f]Antigone[/name_f] - I like the nn [name_f]Annie[/name_f] but don’t like the name [name_f]Antigone[/name_f]…I could be saying it wrong too for all I know as i’ve never heard of or seen this name before at all.
[name_f]Aislinn[/name_f] - The meaning dream is wonderful, i’ve never heard the name before so i’m currently pronouncing it how it looks…
[name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f] - I much prefer [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] (I say [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Marie[/name_f] differently myself) but it’s still a nice name.
[name_f]Candela[/name_f] - nah, not my style personally
[name_f]Icy[/name_f] - [name_f]Icy[/name_f] makes me think of someone who “has a heart as cold as ice” and has an icy personality, is really mean…so huge no from me.
[name_f]Maven[/name_f] - Never heard this name before either, sounds ok if i’m saying it right…[name_f]May[/name_f]-ven?

[name_u]Saylor[/name_u] being a family name is nice! I see it on a boy.
