Please excuse my edit.
“Homely” was my first thought. My mom tends to use “homely” rather than “ugly” whenever she’s talking about people she finds unattractive, and Dictionary.com lists one of the definitions of homely as “lacking in physical attractiveness; not beautiful; unattractive: a homely child.” I would strongly discourage Homily as a name. [name]Do[/name] you like [name]Romilly[/name]?
Doesn’t sound exactly like a name to me, nor feminine. I only know it from the speech, or talk a priest has midway through mass, normally regarding the scriptures read that day. (I’m catholic.) I’m sorry, but I am not a fan of it.
Good luck though!
My first thought was Hominy, like grits. Not exactly the best thing to be named for
Surprisingly, I didn’t even think on hominy…
It sounds like I’m getting a resounding “no”. I was hoping I could fight for it, but it seems to be a lost cause.
Ok, thanks for the input!
What about [name]Connelly[/name], [name]Verity[/name], Verily, or (like a pp suggested) [name]Romilly[/name]?
I do like the sound, but “hominy” did come to mind.
[name]Amelie[/name]?
I do like [name]Romilly[/name] (though I feel like the “R” makes it more masculine? What could I pair with it to soften it up?) and [name]Amelie[/name] is very pretty. Thank you for the suggestions!
I’m Catholic and it sounds very, very Catholic - not in a good way. It also makes me think of “homely.”
Maybe you would like [name]Trinity[/name]? It’s got a similar feel, but it’s commonly used as a name.
Some [name]Romilly[/name] combo ideas:
[name]Romilly[/name] [name]Kate[/name]
[name]Romilly[/name] [name]June[/name]
[name]Romilly[/name] [name]Mae[/name]
[name]Romilly[/name] [name]Hazel[/name]
[name]Romilly[/name] [name]Eve[/name]
I kind of like it, it reminds me of The Borrowers. Homily is Arrietty’s mother in the story.
The first version I ever saw of The Borrowers was this one: The Borrowers (TV Mini Series 1992) - IMDb which was a British made-for-tv production. I can’t stand the American version’s that have been made since. I did however really enjoy the Studio Ghibli version, The [name]Secret[/name] World of Arrietty
I think Homily is sweet. I do think of hominy right off, but not in a negative way. It has a comfortable, old fashioned feel to it.
I, like rin, thought of The Borrowers first
I’ve always kind of had a soft spot for Homily, but I have too many H names on my list already. I really don’t get the “homely” thing, I don’t think they sound the same at all.
I did go to “homely” straightaway, too, I’m afraid. I like the suggestion of [name]Romilly[/name]–much better than my original idea (Humility! A huge GP of mine and I think [name]Millie[/name] or [name]Tilly[/name] would be adorable nicknames, but it does seem hugely unusable!)! I also think of “homonym” and “hominy” very strongly. Not that those are bad, haha, but I keep getting hungry for breakfast whenever I write out Homily. haha.
Good luck!
This is where I got the idea to use it as a name. No one else has had this idea since The Borrowers, apparently. Probably because it reminds everyone of an ugly grit.
Oh well. I’ll keep it on my guilty pleasures list.
It’s not just how pronounceable it is I’d be worried about, but the nasty nick names.
First thing I read when I looked at the title was Hominy, as in Hominy grits. I had to do a double take. The name also sounds kinda of like homely.
