Honest impressions of names?

Arial[/name_u] [name_m]Black[/name_m]]
Uggg…I need help…What are your first impressions when you hear or seem these names? Be honest even if its brutal, I’m needing to wheedle away the long list into a short one of like 5 names, and people recommended some great name (from a previous post) and my family wants me to pass names down, but my list HUGE.

[name_f]Ursulina[/name_f]- family name through [name_f]Ursula[/name_f]

[name_f]Zephyrine[/name_f]

Huge congratulations on the baby.

I love your uniqueness.

I think your first question has to be how annoyed are you going to get with constantly correcting people’s pronunciation and spelling?

If this is going to be an issue for you and your husband it wipes out a fair chunk of your list, but if it’s not an issue then I think you’re onto some excellent names!

My favourites are:
[name_f]Arabella[/name_f]
[name_f]Cleone[/name_f]
Euphrosyne
Frevisse
[name_f]Henrietta[/name_f]
[name_f]Ottilia[/name_f]
Pompeiana (love this)
[name_f]Thalassa[/name_f]
[name_f]Zephyrine[/name_f]

[name_f]Albertine[/name_f]- Family name

[name_u]Love[/name_u] this, classy and refined

[name_f]Alberta[/name_f]- Family name

Prefer [name_f]Albertine[/name_f], think this sounds a bit more place name to me

[name_f]Arabella[/name_f]

Not a bad name per se but I’m not fond of the [name_f]Bella[/name_f]'s, a good one to fit in class, there will be loads of [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]'s so there is a common nickname to resort to if she finds her unusual name a bit much.

Archina/Archibaldina- [name_m]Archie[/name_m] and [name_m]Archibald[/name_m] are family names

Stick to using [name_m]Archie[/name_m] for if you have a son, these feminizations are a bit much,

[name_f]Anatola[/name_f]

Prefer [name_m]Anatoly[/name_m]

Amoretta

My spell check thought I had misspelled the Italian biscuit - nuff said

[name_f]Basilia[/name_f]/Basilea

If you must, then with an I, think this one belongs in middle name territory only though

[name_f]Bethel[/name_f] - Family surname

If you want to honour this family surname, go with something a bit more first name like. Much though I hate suggesting my own name as I dislike it intensely, [name_f]Bethany[/name_f] would give a good fit here, as would Welsh alternative, [name_f]Bethan[/name_f].

Belphoebe- long time love of [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]

Stick with [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]

Canacee- My mother recommended this one

Sounds like cancer

[name_f]Corisande[/name_f]

Gorgeous with lots of lovely nickname possibilities

Clariandra

Sounds like a medication for a sexual disease

Clarimonde

Ok, but not my favourite on your list

[name_f]Cleone[/name_f]/Kleone- a book powder and Patch made me see this name as pretty

Prefer [name_f]Leonie[/name_f] or [name_f]Cleo[/name_f], this looks like a smoosh name.

[name_f]Dulcibella[/name_f]/Dowsabel/Dulcibel/[name_f]Dulcinea[/name_f]

[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Dulcinea[/name_f], the others not so much, the literary connection for [name_f]Dulcinea[/name_f] is super

Eustachia

Pistachio

[name_f]Ernestina[/name_f]- my father’s middle is [name_m]Ernest[/name_m]

One of my faves on your list, was on my own long list. I love all ine names!

[name_f]Eugenia[/name_f]- family name

Prefer [name_f]Evgenia[/name_f], love the Russian short form Zhenya.

Ermintrude- just smitten with this name

Cow on the magic roundabout (70s and 80s UK children’s TV), but still sounds like the name of a cow.

Euphrosyne- I like what is implied

Sounds like a disease even if the meaning is lovely.

[name_f]Eudora[/name_f]- I knew [name_f]Doris[/name_f] who was wonderful influence on my life, but hate [name_f]Doris[/name_f] by itself

[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Dora[/name_f] as a nickname (biased!) but prefer [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] and [name_f]Theodora[/name_f]

[name_f]Frederica[/name_f]- family name

Nice, but prefer the Frederike spelling.

Frevisse - Crevise? If you like the Fre sound, another possibility is [name_m]French[/name_m] name Fraisine.

[name_f]Gregoria[/name_f]- [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] is a family name

Save [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] for a little boy, it’s gorgeous

Nice, keep.

Lionella/Lyonella - [name_m]Lyon[/name_m] is family maiden name- experimenting here

No, dreadful

Prefer [name_f]Ottavia[/name_f] but this is OK

[name_f]Ottilia[/name_f]- family name

[name_f]Lovely[/name_f], keep

[name_f]Roberta[/name_f]- family name

Not too fussed, not dreadful but not really special

Pompeiana- husband recommended

Sounds like pompous

[name_f]Philippa[/name_f]- atrracted too

Ok

Pomelina/Pommelina/Pomellina

I like this but when I suggested it to my [name_m]German[/name_m] husband it only made him think of [name_m]French[/name_m] fries, your [name_m]German[/name_m] relatives may find it amusing

Sabelina- mother had original wanted to name me [name_u]Sabel[/name_u]

[name_f]Sabine[/name_f] is more common in Germany, Sabeline sounds a bit made up

[name_f]Lovely[/name_f]

[name_f]Thalassa[/name_f]

Sounds like a spa therapy

[name_f]Ursulina[/name_f]- family name through [name_f]Ursula[/name_f]

Nice

[name_f]Zephyrine[/name_f][/QUOTE]

Oh my goodness, that’s gorgeous, keep!

[name_f]Alberta[/name_f]- prefer [name_f]Albertine[/name_f]

[name_f]Arabella[/name_f] - lovely name

[name_f]Anatola[/name_f] - it’s OK

Ermintrude- if you love it, that’s what counts!

A lot of your names are lovely and unique, but as previous poster said, it would depend on how OK you are with the name getting mistaken for another name/ spelled/pronounced wrong most of the time. I divided the names into two categories:

  • Rather too unique, would be misspelled/ mispronounced all the time:
Archina/ Archibaldina (maybe save [name_m]Archibald[/name_m] for a possible boy? this feminized version doesn’t work, [name_f]IMO[/name_f])
    Canacee
    Clariandra
    Clarimonde
    [name_f]Cleone[/name_f]/Kleone (I like the C-spelling. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] as an alternative?)
Ducibella/Dowsabel/Ducibel ([name_f]Dulcibella[/name_f] is quite pretty, don’t like Dowsabel though)
Eustachia (makes me think of stache as a nickname… [name_f]IMO[/name_f] [name_f]Eustacia[/name_f] is a better spelling)
Ermintrude (I actually like this name ^^)
Euphrosyne (I like the name’s history and namesakes but this would be rather difficult as a first name- maybe as a middle?)
    Frevisse
Lionella/Lyonella (I think doesn’t quite work for girl- maybe save [name_u]Lionel[/name_u]/[name_m]Lyon[/name_m] for a possible boy?)
    Leopoldine (ditto- [name_m]Leopold[/name_m])
    Morvoren
    Pompeiana
    Sinope

  • Still unique but mostly more familiar in peoples’ minds, would be more usable:
[name_f]Albertine[/name_f] (usable, though I don’t quite like it because it makes me think of libertine)
[name_f]Alberta[/name_f] ([name_f]Alberta[/name_f] is better and more unique but familiar than [name_f]Albertine[/name_f] [name_f]IMO[/name_f])
    Amoretta
    [name_f]Arabella[/name_f]
[name_f]Anatola[/name_f] (this is nice. I think [name_f]Anatolia[/name_f] is prettier though)
    [name_f]Bethel[/name_f]
    [name_f]Basilia[/name_f]
    Belphoebe
    [name_f]Corisande[/name_f]
    [name_f]Dulcinea[/name_f]
    [name_f]Ernestina[/name_f]
    [name_f]Eugenia[/name_f]
    [name_f]Eudora[/name_f]
    [name_f]Frederica[/name_f]
[name_f]Gregoria[/name_f] (this is OK enough, though I think [name_m]Gregor[/name_m]/ [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] for a boy is much better)
    [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f]
Ottaviana (I like this, though [name_f]IMO[/name_f] [name_f]Ottavia[/name_f] is just as pretty, and would be easier)
[name_f]Ottilia[/name_f] (it’s cute, still quite usable?)
    [name_f]Philippa[/name_f]
Pomelina (still quite usable) (Pommelina/Pomellina would be less straightforward to spell)
    [name_f]Roberta[/name_f]
Sabelina (pretty. Previous poster suggestion of [name_f]Sabine[/name_f] or [name_f]Sabina[/name_f] is nice too)
    [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f]
    [name_f]Thalassa[/name_f]
    [name_f]Ursulina[/name_f] ([name_f]Ursula[/name_f] is nice [name_f]IMO[/name_f])
    [name_f]Zephyrine[/name_f]

My favorites from your list are [name_f]Arabella[/name_f], Belphoebe, [name_f]Dulcinea[/name_f], [name_f]Eudora[/name_f], [name_f]Frederica[/name_f], [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f], [name_f]Philippa[/name_f], [name_f]Thalassa[/name_f], & [name_f]Zephyrine[/name_f]. Good luck on your naming journey!

[name_f]Albertine[/name_f]: I would stick with the boy versions for all the boy names ( except [name_f]Eugenia[/name_f])
[name_f]Alberta[/name_f]: I like it
[name_f]Arabella[/name_f]: Pretty, but feels super frilly and trendy to me.
Archina/Archibaldina: I really don’t like this
[name_f]Anatola[/name_f]: Like the mountains?
Amoretta: I prefer [name_f]Amoret[/name_f]
[name_f]Basilia[/name_f]/Basilea: NMS
[name_f]Bethel[/name_f]: Not very pretty
Belphoebe: Cool
Canacee: The spelling and sound are off to me.
[name_f]Corisande[/name_f]: 1st one I love!
Clariandra: Seems overdone
Clarimonde: ditto
[name_f]Cleone[/name_f]/Kleone: [name_f]Cleona[/name_f] is OK
[name_f]Dulcibella[/name_f]/Dowsabel/Dulcibel/[name_f]Dulcinea[/name_f]: Maybe sugar instead
Eustachia: Like Eustachian tube?
[name_f]Ernestina[/name_f]: See above

[name_f]Eudora[/name_f]: Second fav
[name_f]Frederica[/name_f]: see above

Leopoldine: [name_m]Leopold[/name_m] on a boy = divine
Morvoren: No
Ottaviana: [name_f]Octavia[/name_f]?
[name_f]Ottilia[/name_f]: Like it
[name_f]Roberta[/name_f]: [name_f]Ramona[/name_f]?
Pompeiana: NMS
[name_f]Philippa[/name_f]: [name_u]Love[/name_u] it.
Pomelina/Pommelina/Pomellina: Third fav
Sabelina: NMS
Sinope: Turkey connection?
[name_f]Thomasina[/name_f]: It’s ok.
[name_f]Thalassa[/name_f]: [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f] is better
[name_f]Ursulina[/name_f]: NMS
[name_f]Zephyrine[/name_f]: OK.

[name_f]Albertine[/name_f] & [name_f]Alberta[/name_f]- I’ve never heard [name_f]Albertine[/name_f] before. I like it better than [name_f]Alberta[/name_f]. [name_f]Alberta[/name_f] seems rather dusty and old to me. If I were you, I’d wait for a boy and use [name_m]Albert[/name_m]. But [name_f]Albertine[/name_f] is nice.

[name_f]Arabella[/name_f]- I like [name_f]Arabella[/name_f]. I’m sick of the -bella names but [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] is pretty and I see the appeal.

Archina/Archibaldina- Archina reminds me of spiders. Archibaldina is a bit much.

[name_f]Anatola[/name_f]- I like [name_f]Anatola[/name_f]. I think it is pretty and different. I will say that I prefer [name_m]Anatole[/name_m] for a boy, but [name_f]Anatola[/name_f] is pretty.

Amoretta- eh. Too frilly. Prefer [name_f]Etta[/name_f].

[name_f]Basilia[/name_f]/Basilea- I like. I’m Greek so I’m glad to see some appreciation for this awesome, beautiful name. So under used and it so pretty. Greeks usually spell it [name_f]Basilia[/name_f] (or [name_f]Vasilia[/name_f]).

[name_f]Bethel[/name_f] - I think [name_f]Bethel[/name_f] is pretty. And you could use the nn [name_f]Beth[/name_f] or [name_f]Ethel[/name_f] if you wanted.

Belphoebe- i love Belphoebe. I think it is super sweet. It’s like pretzel M&Ms, sweet with the [name_f]Belle[/name_f] beginning and salty with the sassy [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f].

Canacee- Not sure how to pronounce it. Not a fan of how it looks with the two -ee at the ending.

[name_f]Corisande[/name_f]- I think [name_f]Corisande[/name_f] is really pretty. And you could use the nn [name_f]Cora[/name_f] or [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] which is pretty.

Clariandra- Its a bit to frilly for me. Prefer [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] or [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] or [name_f]Clarissa[/name_f].

Clarimonde- Eh. Too surnamey for me.

[name_f]Cleone[/name_f]/Kleone- I love [name_f]Cleone[/name_f]/Kleone (prefer the C spelling). I’m glad someone else does too. I love the nn [name_f]Cleo[/name_f].

[name_f]Dulcibella[/name_f]/Dowsabel/Dulcibel/[name_f]Dulcinea[/name_f]- Not a fan. I do like the nn [name_f]Dulcie[/name_f] though.

Eustachia- Not sure how to pronounce it.

[name_f]Ernestina[/name_f]- Eh. I prefer [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] for a boy. I’d save it. But [name_f]Ernestina[/name_f] is pretty too.

[name_f]Eugenia[/name_f]- [name_f]Eugenia[/name_f] is growing on me. I think it is really pretty and stately. And underused.

Ermintrude- Doesn’t sound feminine to me.

Euphrosyne- I like it but pronunciation will be a nightmare.

[name_f]Eudora[/name_f]- I love [name_f]Eudora[/name_f]. It is a great choice with great meaning. I like how it has special meaning to you.

[name_f]Frederica[/name_f]- I really like this. I haven’t given [name_f]Frederica[/name_f] much thought, but it is super pretty and unexpected.

Frevisse- Not sure how to pronounce it.

[name_f]Gregoria[/name_f]- I like it. I love [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] so of course I’ll like it. I’d probably save [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] for a boy but [name_f]Gregoria[/name_f] is really pretty and unexpected, without being too out there.

[name_f]Henrietta[/name_f]- Eh. I prefer [name_m]Henry[/name_m]. I think it is coming back in style though.

Lionella/Lyonella - I’d spell it Lionella. I think it really pretty and different. Fits in well since [name_m]Leo[/name_m] names are on the rise.

Leopoldine- I prefer Leopoldine to [name_m]Leopold[/name_m]. I think it sounds stately and elegant.

Morvoren- Not sure how to pronounce it.

Ottaviana- I like [name_m]Otto[/name_m]. But Ottaviana is too much. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Ottoline[/name_f], Ottolina, [name_f]Ottilia[/name_f], or [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]? I’d probably just save [name_m]Otto[/name_m] for a boy since it is super cool.

[name_f]Ottilia[/name_f]- Oh. I didn’t see the next suggestion. I like [name_f]Ottilia[/name_f]. I think its pretty. I prefer [name_f]Ottoline[/name_f] though.

[name_f]Roberta[/name_f]- It’s alright. It sounds a bit frumpy to me.

Pompeiana- Eh. It’s a bit much.

[name_f]Philippa[/name_f]- I like [name_f]Philippa[/name_f]. Prefer it’s sweet nn [name_f]Pippa[/name_f]! But yes, [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] is pretty and elegant.

Pomelina/Pommelina/Pomellina- [name_u]Love[/name_u]. I also really like [name_f]Pomeline[/name_f].

Sabelina- I prefer just [name_u]Sabel[/name_u]. Your mom suggests cool names!

Sinope- Nope. It’s all I see.

[name_f]Thomasina[/name_f]- I love [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f]. It is pretty, unexpected, and elegant.

[name_f]Thalassa[/name_f]- Yes. I’d feel weird using it since it’s the Greek word for sea, but I’d love to see other people using it because it is so pretty.

[name_f]Ursulina[/name_f]- I like it. I like [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] too. [name_f]Ursulina[/name_f] has a daintiness that [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] doesn’t have. But [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] is simple and elegant which I like.

[name_f]Zephyrine[/name_f]- Pretty. Would confuse a few people on pronunciation, but it has a pretty sound.

These names are REALLY not my style.
I don’t particular see more than maybe Roberta, Henrietta or Philippa usable. Frederica is fine too.

However, I really love Ursula.

I thank you graciously for all of you- Nameberries, for your input and honest responses. Sorry that I have been away, and a little busy. The responses that stood out and spoke the most to me were those who understood what I was trying to accomplish. Many of the responses you gave let me know what was Classy, Elegant, and what I should scratch off my list because it is too out there or just ugly. This of coarse made me sad, but the thought that perhaps in the future some of these names may make their way on to birth certificates and people may change their perception. But, my overall desire weighed out for the classy, elegant, and pretty names. After discussing these names with my husband, we narrowed the list down to 11 names from the original 38 names, not quite five, but you helped and it is a start.
