Honest opinion of Ulysses

[name_m]Just[/name_m] curious about what people think of this name. It’s been the name of so many great people and I think it has potential.

Is it usable on a boy today?
Have you ever met a [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m]?
Can you think of any decent boys nicknames apart from [name_u]Uli[/name_u]?
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you have trouble pronouncing it? (I have no trouble with [name_m]Odysseus[/name_m] but seem to get tongue tied saying [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m])

Well, I have an uncle [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m], though he goes by Dutch, for some reason. I do think it’s usable and I don’t have trouble pronouncing it (but I’ve studied the Odyssey in many translations over and over). All that said, I’d definitely use it as a middle, but not as a first. Not because it’s not usable but because it’s sound and references aren’t all that positive to me. Still, it could work. As for a nn…yeah, I probably just wouldn’t use one.

I love [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m]. It’s one of our favorites, apart from the meaning. We personally consider it for a first name, but that’s mostly to do with our last initial K, which tends to lead to unfortunate initials with the U in the middle. We wouldn’t use a nickname. I don’t have trouble pronouncing it, but haha, my husband has trouble with [name_m]Odysseus[/name_m], not [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m]. Opposite problem.

I think it’s completely usable today.

I have never met anyone named [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m], though it obviously invokes the thought of [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] S [name_m]Grant[/name_m] the great general and president. I guess an interesting nickname could be Sess?

I really like [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m], and I don’t struggle with the pronunciation at all. I think [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] is more usable than [name_m]Odysseus[/name_m].

Nicknames are tricky and I bet one would develop organically. From the name itself, I just see [name_u]Uli[/name_u], Ule (prn. [name_u]Yule[/name_u]), [name_u]Les[/name_u]/Lis, Sess.

I’ve never met a [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m], but it is such a classic name. To me, it sounds like the name of a boy with parents who are history fans, or otherwise well-read… or it could be a family name.
