Honest opinion on name: Jonesy

For those of you who have ever watched the cartoon series “6teen”, you know where my inspiration came from. I’ve been toying with this name for years, thinking “If I ever become pregnant, would I use this name?” It’s a guilty-pleasure for me, and I’m just wondering what you all think of it.

… Try not to let the show cloud your decision.

I’ve never seen the show, but you should know that the word “jones” is defined as “an addiction, especially to heroin.” When someone is craving something to which he is addicted, he’s “jonesing for it.” A smoker who is trying to quit but gets a craving would say, “I’m jonesing for a cigarette.” Because of that, I can’t take the name seriously. Also, with popularity of [name]Jones[/name] as a last name, it doesn’t feel like a title to give to a child…or adult. Sorry, that’s my honest opinion. [name]How[/name] about [name]Jonas[/name]?

I’ve seen/heard of this how before. To me [name]Jonesy[/name] would be a nickname for somebody with the last name [name]Jones[/name].

Sorry, not loving it or even liking it. It might be OK for a NN but I can’t imagine someone going through life with this name.

I’m not a fan of it at all, sorry. To me it seems like someone took the girl name [name]Josie[/name] and added an n to turn it into a boy’s name.

I can see it as a nn for [name]Jones[/name] or [name]Jonas[/name] though

it’s a condescending nickname for a butler or chauffeur to me… i’m pretty sure i read a book where [name]Jonesy[/name] was some rich old broad’s driver. definitely does not work as a given name - maybe as a nn, but even then i’m not sure.

Definitely didn’t think of “jonesing”, so that’s good to know … I can understand why no one else likes it I guess … oh well :frowning:

It can’t be a nickname for him though, because his name is “[name]Jonesy[/name] [name]Garcia[/name]” … lol

I used to watch a show on HBO called Carnivale about a travelling carnival set in the depression era thats full of all sorts of people good bad and one of the characters is named [name]Jonesy[/name] so it makes me think of carnival workers…

I’ve never seen the show. [name]Jonesy[/name] is a surname nickname, like Smithy or [name]Davies[/name] or Jackso.

It’s not horrific but it’s very cutesy to me.

I’d say, if you want to use it then name your child [name]Jonas[/name], [name]Johan[/name], [name]Joseph[/name], [name]Johnson[/name], [name]Jonathan[/name], or something like that, and then use [name]Jonesy[/name] as a nn.

I immediately thought of [name]Indiana[/name] [name]Jones[/name].

As other posters have stated, I just think of [name]Jonesy[/name] as a nickname for someone with the last name [name]Jones[/name]. Can’t picture it as a first name. Also, it makes me think of the orange cat from the Alien movies.

I really don’t like it sorry. What about Johnsy? It seems like more of a name to me. I think of the negative connotations of jonesing as well so that would really turn me off from the name.
