I’ve always gone back and forth with the name [name_f]Polly[/name_f] (and [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] as well), and I’ve yet to come to a decision as to whether or not I love it. When I asked my best friend (who is 21 and lives in Liverpool, [name_f]England[/name_f]), she said her first thought was parrots, and that she wasn’t a fan, yet my 15 year old sister was fine with it.
What do you think, is [name_f]Polly[/name_f] a good addition to my signature list? Or [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f]? What are your honest thoughts on [name_f]Polly[/name_f]?
I second the parrot association. I don’t find [name_f]Polly[/name_f] to be a pleasant sounding name at all, but it’s clunky, vintage feel certainly goes with the other names in your signature. Soooo, I vote no. Because I think you have much prettier choices.
I still cannot hear [name_f]Polly[/name_f] without immediately thinking of yellow plastic hair and rubber doll clothes. (I hope you get where I’m going with that…) [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] doesn’t sound nice to my ear either, to be honest.
Honestly, the first thing that popped into my head was “[name_f]Polly[/name_f] wanna cracker?”
But, then I remembered it was the name of a lady I know and she is the sweetest. The name fits her well. I’m not crazy about [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f].
Personally I prefer [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f]; it’s got more substance. But I don’t see anything wrong with [name_f]Polly[/name_f]. [name_f]Polly[/name_f] reminds me of [name_f]Polly[/name_f] Pocket.
I am the minority who didn’t think of parrots at all, haha. Instead I thought of the nursery rhyme, ‘Miss [name_f]Polly[/name_f] had a dolly who was sick, sick, sick…’
I don’t think it’s bad at all, I do like [name_f]Molly[/name_f] slightly more though
Technically I like [name_f]Polly[/name_f]. It is spunky and sassy and has a good dollop of charm. I have a bad association with one though, so I just think of her. Obviously, you don’t have this problem, so I think it would make a good addition to your list. I don’t like [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] though, as it is an alternative term for a [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Sue[/name_f].
[name_f]Polly[/name_f] is pretty well established for parrots, and I’d be offended to be called [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f], so I certainly wouldn’t subject a female child to a life of never being taken seriously.
I’m missing something here, what exactly is offensive about [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f]?..I just like it for the connection to [name_f]Hayley[/name_f] [name_m]Mills[/name_m], (who I was named after), and I’ve never ever heard of it outside of the book, but it ranks in the UK top 1000.
[name_f]Polly[/name_f] had been growing on me for a few months, until someone [name_m]IRL[/name_m] asked me my favourite name and I realised it was probably my favourite. I love it and don’t associate it with parrots at all. I think its whimsical, vintage, feminine, spunky, underused…I could go on. [name_f]My[/name_f] current combo is [name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] which I like but don’t love, so I’m on the look out for a better middle name.
It fits current trends where I live, which is classic nicknames (think [name_u]Alfie[/name_u], [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], etc.) so I don’t think it’d stand out too much for the wrong reasons. I really like it!
I think [name_f]Polly[/name_f] is just lovely by herself, and perfectly usable. I’m not a huge [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] fan if I’m honest, although I do like [name_f]Bibiana[/name_f] which feels quite similar.
I know a [name_f]Polly[/name_f], she’s a year or so older than me and pulls it off beautifully; I think her fuller name is [name_f]Polly[/name_f]-[name_f]Anne[/name_f] but she’s exclusively [name_f]Polly[/name_f]. Actually I do know a [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] too, she’s Brazilian (apparently it’s quite popular there, especially for teenagers).
I don’t think the references it has are particularly bad or even that strong - the parrot thing doesn’t bother me (even though my great aunt does have a parrot called [name_f]Polly[/name_f] that I grew up around). The [name_f]Nirvana[/name_f] song is probably my biggest association, and then [name_f]Polly[/name_f] Pocket. I’ve never heard the ‘‘Miss [name_f]Polly[/name_f] had a [name_f]Dolly[/name_f]’’ thing (it’s Miss [name_f]Molly[/name_f] where I live). I don’t understand why anyone would be offended by [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] either (care to explain @rkrd, it seems entirely innocent to me, am I missing a reference?)
I actually really like [name_f]Polly[/name_f] (and [name_f]Molly[/name_f]), and think it would be a cute name or nickname for a little girl. I’m not huge on [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] just due to the association with the book/movie, because I understand that it was thereafter used as an insult for someone who is an optimist to such a degree that they have their head in the clouds.
[name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] has become a slang word for an “unreasonably or illogically optimistic” person, sort of like a [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Sue[/name_f]: POLLYANNA Definition & Usage Examples | Dictionary.com
still failing to see how that’s offensive, haha. [name_f]My[/name_f] head’s always in the clouds, and especially was as a child due to optimism, I don’t see it as a bad thing?
Coming back to add that I actually love [name_f]Dolly[/name_f], thanks to the O’[name_m]Connell[/name_m] twins. Maybe that might be something you’d like?
I think of parrots as well ([name_f]Polly[/name_f] want a cracker is said often) I prefer [name_f]Molly[/name_f] or [name_f]Holly[/name_f] and to me [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] seems trying too hard. I also think of Miss Polly had a dolly, the perks of having a mum who does daycare
I feel like I should adore [name_f]Dolly[/name_f], as my great grandmother (born [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]) always goes by it, but I ended up coming to the conclusion that it’s in the same vein as [name_f]Kitty[/name_f] for me, adorable, but pushing the boundaries too far for me.
