Honest opinions on Blythe

Hi Berries,

I’m wondering what the general consensus on Blythe was. It’s the most “out there” name on my “would actually use list” so I wanted to know how others feel about it.

Do you think it’s usable? Do you like it? What would you think if you met a little Blythe? What connections do you make when you hear it?

I love the idea of having Birdie or Billie as a family nickname bc I like both names but would never use either as a formal first name.

Thank you for your insight! :slightly_smiling_face:

I love [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] so so much! I would most likely use it as a first if I ever find any middles I like with it. I definitely don’t think the name is out there and I would love to meet a [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]. I also think [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] is one of those names where it would fit any personality. I can imagine a sassy and spunky girl with the name, a sweet and caring little girl, a tomboy, an artsy girl, and everything in between.

[name_f]My[/name_f] first connection (after I got over my internal fangirl moment) would be [name_u]Anne[/name_u] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables as [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] is a big character in there. And he’s a great character so its not a bad connection. I think [name_u]Billie[/name_u] and [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] are absolutely darling as nicknames.

I love [name_f]Blythe[/name_f], and I love the idea of using [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] or [name_u]Billie[/name_u] as a nickname!! So sweet :))

I think [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] is totally usable, and it’s definitely becoming more well known. I love its positive meaning and the sweet, wispy sound. I would love to meet a little [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] :)) The imagery that comes to mind is warm, light, and airy. I associate it with a warm gold color and with a light pink. I also make the [name_u]Anne[/name_u] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables connection, which I think is lovely and contributes to the sweet and warm imagery of the name.

I like [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] and think it’s usable. It’s very warm and archaic and a bit offbeat, as it doesn’t have a long history as a given name. It makes me think of [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f].

I think Blythe is perfectly usable! It doesn’t strike me as weird at all. It’s not really my style - the imagery it gives to me is dark purple and perfume and night skies, which isn’t the vibe I look for in a name, but it’s nice. It feels modern to me but has something elegant and chic going on too.

I love Birdie and Billie! Not sure how likely they’d be to stick as nicknames for Blythe, I’d prefer them for a longer name where they’d be a bit more intuitive, but they’re pretty adorable.

I loooooooove Blythe!! I have a MAJOR crush on Gilbert Blythe from Anne of Green Gables, so of course I like it. I also know a little Blythe, and I think it’s totally usable!

I think [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] is unique and charming. It seems both modern and old-fashioned, and it feels very versatile as well. I really like it, and I would love to meet with it irl!

[name_f]My[/name_f] only association is [name_u]Anne[/name_u] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables, though it is used as a surname, rather than a first name, in that series.

The family nicknames are a cute idea, too, and I really think it could work. And, overall, I would say [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] is a great choice! Definitely usable.

I’m about to commit a [name_u]Berry[/name_u] thought crime, but I don’t love [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]. I’m just not a big fan of the sound, I find it stodgy and a bit of a tongue twister to say.

However, I do like the general feel and style of [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] and think it’s a very fresh, sleek vintage name that deserves more use. The meaning is wonderful and I like that it feels a little lacy but not frilly.

[name_f]Blythe[/name_f] definitely strikes me as totally usable (there was one in my year at school!) It would be a pleasant surprise to meet a little [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] now, in this era of vowel-rich, melodic, Latinate girl names. [name_u]Love[/name_u] your nickname ideas!

You know what, I’m talking myself around to [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] now…

i think blythe is just lovely !!

it feels completely usable to me - i’ve encountered one real life blythe, and i’ve seen it as a middle name on two others. even though it’s fairly uncommon, it has a pretty intuitive sound, and fits in with some more common names (e.g. grace, rose) as a streamlined, feminine classic.

i’d love to meet a young blythe !! i think it’s a cool, underused classic name, with an interesting distinctive sound (i agree with @katinka that it’s a fun change from the plethora of mila/lena/emma/lila style names that dominate european popularity charts at the moment). blythe nn billie is especially exciting !!

my primary associations with blythe (besides those that i know) are gilbert blythe from anne of green tables and the concept of happiness. it gives me imagery of bunting, victoria sponge cake, and a lovely garden.

I like it very much. It’s a simple, elegant little name with some old fashioned glamour to it.

I love [name_f]Blythe[/name_f], especially with [name_u]Billie[/name_u] as a nickname! It’s so darling! It reminds me of “bright”, which is an association that goes hand in hand with the meaning. I think it’s very sweet!

LOVE [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]. I know two, as it’s a family name. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: So wearable, so pretty, and so whimsical. Really an earthy gem of a name. Short and sweet, familiar and fantastical.

I really don’t like it - I just don’t find the sounds attractive at all. It does however have a lovely meaning, and it seems I’m very much in the minority not liking it. I’d probably be pleasantly surprised to meet a little one despite not personally liking the name, as it would sound so different (but not weird) and refreshing among all the ava’s, Amelia’s, Mia’s etc.

I also really don’t like it. To me the sounds are harsh and sharp. However, I don’t know any Blythes, so perhaps if i did, the person would shape the way I hear the name.
