I’m all for proper execution when it comes to names, which is why my son is [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] and not Linkin or something… but this name really gets to me.
I don’t think one is better than the other. Neither is easier to spell, explain or pronounce. It’s going to be asked how to spell it regardless, a problem I didn’t think I’d encounter with [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] but I guess people just don’t know how to spell. [name_m]Even[/name_m] when I say “the proper way” people still actually need it spelled out. But this name has no “proper way”?
Both look cool, both directly relate to the mythological creature, just different spellings from different places and both have meaning to us in regards to a place and the nickname [name_m]Fin[/name_m].
Which do you prefer? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think one would be easier to explain / spell? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you just have a personal preference? What’s your honest opinion on meeting a little [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] or [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m] NN [name_m]Fin[/name_m]?
Annajames, both are the correct word / name for the same thing. But I do agree that to those unfamiliar with its history that [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m] might look made up. Yours are exactly the type of opinions I want to hear. Thank you.
I like both (I do slightly prefer [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m]), and think it depends on what other names you like and the style overall - [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m] would fit with more unusual names, but I think, with [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m], [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] definitely fits best (and [name_m]Fin[/name_m] would be far more intuitive as a nickname). I also think most would spell and pronounce [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] properly, but many might get a bit lost with [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m] (as can be seen already in this thread).
If you do like both, and can’t choose, you could perhaps (combine the two somewhat and) go with [name_m]Griffon[/name_m], which is also a legitimate spelling.
[name_f]Sunniva[/name_f], Yes I do like both but ultimately I’m looking for what most people prefer and at first glance understand.
I suspected it would be [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] as it’s much more commonly used.
I’d got some opinions on the different names and spelling but what about whether or not this is actually a good name? Does anyone actually like it?
[name_m]Griffin[/name_m] is my nephew’s name and my sister has almost never been questioned on the spelling of his name. So I think most people automatically assume this spelling when they hear the name.
Fwiw my sister has 4 kids and [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] is her child that I think has the name that fits him best. Her other kids have nice names too but [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], I can’t picture him as any other name. He gets called [name_m]Griff[/name_m] for short which is somehow masculine and snuggly. His grandmother loves [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] so calls him Gryffindor which he loves. He’s 7 and I think the name has and will continue to grow with him well. I highly recommend the name to those considering it.
I feel like [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] looks better next to [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m], [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m] looks more mythical to me and would be better suited next to a brother of a similar style. [name_u]Love[/name_u] the nn [name_m]Fin[/name_m]!
Yes, I do believe [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] would be your best bet in regard to the majority. I don’t think you’d have as many issues with that, as opposed to [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m].
As for an opinion on the name itself - yes, I think it is a great name, and I do like it. I love the mythology of it, the combination of lion & eagle, and the great use of it in art throughout history. The name feels both strong and fierce, but also quite gentle, which I like a lot. Also, it’s quite an old name, yet works seamlessly modern day, fitting in with the trends. [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] is a very nice choice.
I would [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] to meet a little [name_m]Griffin[/name_m]. I have considered it for my own list for awhile now, actually. When I see [name_m]Gryphon[/name_m] written out, I don’t struggle with the pronunciation of anything, but I think a lot of people may. If someone told me verbally their name was [name_m]Griffin[/name_m]/[name_m]Gryphon[/name_m], I would instinctively write the [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] spelling.
Yay! Okay thanks everyone for your opinions. I think we’ve chosen [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] with the nickname [name_m]Fin[/name_m]. Now on to middle names!
Thanks again everyone!
