Leaning towards [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] as a middle name if this bump is a boy (we find out next week! ). It’s to honor a long line of family. I used to hate it, but it’s kind of been growing on me.
What do you think? Is it awful? I won’t be offended, and will likely use it anyway. [name_m]Just[/name_m] wondering what your thoughts are.
PS I hate [name_m]Larry[/name_m], so I would never use as a first!
Honestly until a few months ago I hated all [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] relations - they felt odd and old and I just didn’t get it. Low and behold my cousin names her son [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] and asks me to be the godmother. It’s taken me a while (say 5 - 6 months) but [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] has won me over. I now can totally see it on a person of any age and see it grow. I’ve also fallen in love with [name_m]Enzo[/name_m] as a nn and have been trying to get my cousin to get on board with me calling her son that - to no avail. So if you are cool with an alternate spelling [name_m]Lorenz[/name_m]/o nn [name_m]Enzo[/name_m] could work instead of [name_m]Larry[/name_m].
I personally still think I prefer the alternate [name_m]Laurenz[/name_m], [name_m]Laurens[/name_m], [name_m]Lorenz[/name_m], [name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m]’s because I tend to like z’s better than w’s but really it’s neither here nor there. (JFYI: in [name_m]German[/name_m] - and I’m sure some other languages - there is a distinctive tonal difference between the [name_m]Law[/name_m]- Lau- or Lo- versions.)
I love [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u], it’s a great name. I totally agree with you about [name_m]Larry[/name_m], but it would definitely make a terrific middle name. It’s a classic.
P.S. If you did want it for a first name, Larry is not inevitable. There are a lot of other nns that could easily work. I personally think Lawrie is adorable. But it’s also one of those names like Thomas or Alexander that just do a really solid job in the middle spot and give the whole name a nice weight to it or something.
We’re most likely using [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] as a middle name for our little boy due in [name_f]April[/name_f]. For us it also honors multiple Lawrences (and Lauras) on both sides of our families. It’s really grown on me as a handsome classic. If there were nicknames better than [name_m]Larry[/name_m] I think it would be used as a first name more often.
I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the name [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u], and only that spelling, because of the nicknames [name_m]Law[/name_m] and [name_m]Lawry[/name_m] : ) So much better and more boyish than Lau or [name_u]Laurie[/name_u]. Besides that, he’s among some of my favorite Saints and martyrs. BTW, [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] is a wonderful combo.
EDIT: Haha, two of you! Both Andrew and Reid go great with Lawrence.
I like Laurence much more and there was an old man named Lawrence in the extended family and so I couldn’t see the charm of it but maybe in the future???
PS I really like your combo of Andrew Lawrence it works perfectly!
Well, it’s not a name I have any loving passion for, but I think it’s a fine upstanding sort of name.
I like it a lot more since I’ve heard nn options of [name_m]Law[/name_m], [name_m]Lance[/name_m], and [name_u]Wren[/name_u] which seem so much more handsome and modern than yicky [name_m]Larry[/name_m]!
My main hesitancy is that I think some of the older generation would jump on that nickname, and I really detest it.
I think it is a great strong yet gentle name for a boy. But the meaning is a bit bland. [name_m]Man[/name_m] from Laurentium doesn’t exactly inspire sonnets, you know. I love the nn idea [name_m]Lawrie[/name_m] or [name_m]Enzo[/name_m].
I love [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u]. I too, do not like [name_m]Larry[/name_m]. But thanks to [name_m]Little[/name_m] Women, I totally love the nickname [name_u]Laurie[/name_u]. Though, you dont have to worry about that if you use it as a middle.
[name_f]EDIT[/name_f] : I would probably choose [name_u]Reid[/name_u] [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] over [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u]. Since [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] is an actor.
[name_f]EDIT[/name_f] : I would probably choose [name_u]Reid[/name_u] [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] over [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u]. Since [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] is an actor.[/QUOTE]
[name_u]Reid[/name_u] is me, [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] is another poster.
I think [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u], is great, and I didn’t even think of [name_m]Larry[/name_m] as a nn, for some reason I just think [name_m]Lawrie[/name_m]/[name_u]Lorry[/name_u], but it isn’t a name I’d automatically give a nn. Personally, I prefer the Italian/ Spanish variation [name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m], but I just like to be awkward.
We’re using [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] as our baby boys middle name too, [name_m]Archer[/name_m] [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u]! For me it is about growing up beside the St [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_u]River[/name_u] and also loving the heroic story of [name_m]Saint[/name_m] [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u]… as well as growing up watching the [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] Welk show! And we think it is just a great sounding middle name, very distinguished and classic and balances out the trendy [name_m]Archer[/name_m].
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] as a middle name, and as a first name, while not a first choice, I think [name_u]Wren[/name_u] is a much more suitable nickname than [name_m]Larry[/name_m], which I honestly detest. [name_m]Lars[/name_m] or [name_m]Law[/name_m] are good options too!
I really like [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u]. It sounds dignified and thoughtful, but not pretentious or uptight. Had a good friend named [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] and we called him [name_m]Larry[/name_m]. I think it is definitely a name that would get a nickname, but I definitely wouldn’t banish it to a middle name because of that.
I love [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u]! I think my favorite nns are [name_m]Lars[/name_m] and [name_u]Ren[/name_u], but there are a lot of options beyond fusty old [name_m]Larry[/name_m]!
