Honest Thoughts on Mary?

I usually don’t like names that are traditional/classic like [name]Mary[/name] but something about it draws me in…so I’m going to consider using it but before I do that I would like to get outside opinions on it.

So I have a few questions I’m hoping you can help me with.

  1. [name]Do[/name] you think [name]Mary[/name] is over used now?
  2. [name]Do[/name] you like it better as a first name or middle name?
  3. [name]Do[/name] you think a little girl might like to be named [name]Mary[/name]?
  4. [name]Do[/name] you think the association with Bloody [name]Mary[/name] would matter?
  5. What kind of girl do you think of when you think of the name [name]Mary[/name]?
  6. [name]Do[/name] you like [name]Mary[/name]?

Thank You!

  1. No, it was classically quite popular but it’s fairly unpopular for babies now.
  2. If I were using it, I’d probably use it as a first name.
  3. No, if she’s like me as a kid, she’ll want a name she doesn’t have, no matter what her actual name is.
  4. No more than [name]Mary[/name], [name]Mary[/name], Quite Contrary or a number of other nursery rhymes.
  5. Well, honestly, I think of my best friend as she’s named that and she’s the only one younger than 30 that I know.
  6. Yes, but I couldn’t use it.

[name]Mary[/name]! Yay!

  1. [name]Do[/name] you think [name]Mary[/name] is over used now? No. I dropped out of the Top 100 in 2009. I see it used more as a middle name now than as a first name.
  2. [name]Do[/name] you like it better as a first name or middle name? I think it’s gorgeous and classy, so I love it as a first name. Obviously, it works perfectly well as a middle name, too.
  3. [name]Do[/name] you think a little girl might like to be named [name]Mary[/name]? You can never predict these things for certain with any name, but sure. Why not?
  4. [name]Do[/name] you think the association with Bloody [name]Mary[/name] would matter? If it does, it won’t bother her past childhood. There are too many positive associations attached to the name for Bloody [name]Mary[/name] to cancel them all out.
  5. What kind of girl do you think of when you think of the name [name]Mary[/name]? I picture an intelligent and articulate girl.
  6. [name]Do[/name] you like [name]Mary[/name]? Yep! It’s one of my favorite classic names.

  4. No, it’s too well known for that to be an issue.
  5. I think of a very quiet and studious girl.
  6. No, I find it dated and not at all ready for a comeback.
  1. Absolutely not. [name]Mary[/name] would be refreshing on a child at this point. The youngest [name]Mary[/name] I know is in her late 20s.
  2. First name. It seems like it might be a more popular middle name, like [name]Marie[/name] or [name]Elizabeth[/name].
  3. I can’t speak for a little girl growing up in this generation, but I personally would have liked it in the 80s and 90s.
  4. There are SOOO many [name]Marys[/name] in stories, movies, and ESPECIALLY history, that Bloody [name]Mary[/name] is certainly not the first association that jumps into my head. I think of [name]Mary[/name] Ingalls, [name]Mary[/name] Poppins, and the Biblical associations.
  5. Your child would create her own style with the name.
  6. I do like it.

  2. [name]Do[/name] you like it better as a first name or middle name? either one.
  3. [name]Do[/name] you think a little girl might like to be named [name]Mary[/name]? My friend named [name]Mary[/name] gets a lot of “[name]Mary[/name], [name]Mary[/name], quite contrary” and doesn’t like it very much, but I guess it just depends on the person and her particular experience.
  4. [name]Do[/name] you think the association with Bloody [name]Mary[/name] would matter? No.

[name]Do[/name] you think [name]Mary[/name] is over used now? no, not overused. However, it is more common than most people think (not name nerds, but people who are not familiar with popularity charts). It’s always brought up as an example of a name that is now strange and unpopular alongside the trendy, mega-popular ones.

[name]Do[/name] you like it better as a first name or middle name? either. I’d probably use as a middle if I were honoring someone named [name]Mary[/name], because there are other names I love more.

No, I actually would find it kind of unexpected now.

First. Middle name sounds like a filler, a la [name]Marie[/name] in the 80s.

Sure, I can’t see why she’d have any major problems aside from the normal teasing of any little kids.

Yes, it feels fresh again to me. I don’t think I’d use it, but I’d like to meet a little [name]Mary[/name].

I want to answer this post since my 3-year-old (almost 4) is named [name]Mary[/name]!

  1. [name]Do[/name] you think [name]Mary[/name] is over used now?

No, not for babies. Besides my daughter, I only know one other [name]Mary[/name] under the age of 5.

  1. [name]Do[/name] you like it better as a first name or middle name?

First name.

  1. [name]Do[/name] you think a little girl might like to be named [name]Mary[/name]?

My daughter loves it. We call her by her nickname, [name]Molly[/name], most of the time, but she likes to tell people that her other name is [name]Mary[/name] [name]Patricia[/name]. She calls it her “pretty name.”

  1. [name]Do[/name] you think the association with Bloody [name]Mary[/name] would matter?

I’d be surprised if it did.

  1. What kind of girl do you think of when you think of the name [name]Mary[/name]?

I think of my daughter now, but the reason why I like this name because I don’t associate it with a specific personality. Since it’s such a classic, I think it’s very versatile.

  1. [name]Do[/name] you like [name]Mary[/name]?

Yes! Very much.

Something to keep in mind with [name]Mary[/name]: People like to combine it with the middle name ("[name]Mary[/name] [name]Beth[/name]," “[name]Mary[/name] [name]Ann[/name],” etc.) so, if this is an issue for you, try to find a middle name that sounds nice but won’t get shortened to something cutesy. I thought I was safe with [name]Mary[/name] [name]Patricia[/name] but then my father-in-law started calling my daughter [name]Mary[/name] [name]Pat[/name]. This made me wish I had picked a different middle name but it was too much trouble (and would have caused too much upset) to change it after the fact.

  1. [name]Do[/name] you think [name]Mary[/name] is over used now? No.
  2. [name]Do[/name] you like it better as a first name or middle name? Middle. but it’s also pretty as fn.
  3. [name]Do[/name] you think a little girl might like to be named [name]Mary[/name]? why doesn’t she?
  4. [name]Do[/name] you think the association with Bloody [name]Mary[/name] would matter? Not really. Maybe (just maybe) she will be teased. But it’s not a big thing. The religious and historical root are much stronger.
  5. What kind of girl do you think of when you think of the name [name]Mary[/name]? Sweet, simple, feminin.
  6. [name]Do[/name] you like [name]Mary[/name]? Yes. but I prefer [name]Marie[/name].
  1. Definitely not (in the UK). Never met one under 60!
  2. First, without a doubt. It sounds weak and soppy as a middle name.
  3. Yes, it is different but classy. On the other hand, who likes their given names as a child? I desperately wanted to be [name]Millicent[/name]…
  4. Not one tot.
  5. I’m instantly interested - because I don’t know any!
  6. I like traditional names, partly because I wouldn’t want whatever name I chose to become dated, and partly because they’re a bit more unusual. [name]One[/name] of my mum’s given names is [name]Mary[/name] and I have tried so hard to like it, but the alternatives are sweeter ([name]Mari[/name], [name]Molly[/name], [name]Meg[/name], [name]Polly[/name]). Still, I reckon you should be brave and go for it if you like it. I have never met anyone younger than 60 with it as a name, so bag it now!!

Thank You! :)[/QUOTE]

I love the story about your daughter calling [name]Mary[/name] [name]Patricia[/name] her “pretty name!” It makes me love [name]Mary[/name] even more than I already do!

  1. [name]Do[/name] you think [name]Mary[/name] is over used now?

  2. [name]Do[/name] you like it better as a first name or middle name?
It seems so unexpected in the first position. As a middle it seems very ‘safe’.
  3. [name]Do[/name] you think a little girl might like to be named [name]Mary[/name]?
Honestly, I don’t know. It’s certainly still an ‘old lady’ name to me, but I know plenty of girls who love their old fashioned name ([name]Hilda[/name], [name]Dora[/name], [name]Edie[/name]). It would depend on the child, I think.
  4. [name]Do[/name] you think the association with Bloody [name]Mary[/name] would matter?
    Nope.
  5. What kind of girl do you think of when you think of the name [name]Mary[/name]?

  6. [name]Do[/name] you like [name]Mary[/name]?
Yes - it’s so sweet and like I said, unexpected. I’d be very pleasantly surprised to meet a baby [name]Mary[/name].

  4. [name]Do[/name] you think the association with Bloody [name]Mary[/name] would matter? Not really. Everyone has heard of [name]Mary[/name] in other senses, so this isn’t the only association. This might be one reason why a girl might not want to be named [name]Mary[/name], though.

  4. [name]Do[/name] you think the association with Bloody [name]Mary[/name] would matter? - No, I don’t.
  5. What kind of girl do you think of when you think of the name [name]Mary[/name]? - I think because it’s so classic and therefore often used, I think [name]Mary[/name] could honestly be anyone, although in my mind they’re sweet, friendly and creative.
  6. [name]Do[/name] you like [name]Mary[/name]? - Yeah, I do.
  1. [name]Do[/name] you think [name]Mary[/name] is over used now?
Not at all. I used to think it was boring (when I was 12 and thought names like [name]Mercedes[/name] were ideal) but now I think it’s lovely.

  2. [name]Do[/name] you like it better as a first name or middle name?
I like it as a first name if it’s going to be a double name. I love hearing the variations on [name]Mary[/name] ____ because I know a lot of people who choose a family mn to go with [name]Mary[/name]. I like [name]Mary[/name] as a mn though because I think it’s a little different.

    I do. I think it’s really beautiful.
