So I’ve seen [name]Merida[/name] in the name box a lot lately and I was just wondering what others thought of it? I know the movie Brave is coming out soon…do you think the name will actually become more popular because of the movie? I personally think it is a pretty name- although I’m a little upset that for the movie they didn’t use an actual Scottish name- seeing as [name]Merida[/name] is actually Latin… but oh well!
I think it’s pretty. I know of a baby [name]Merida[/name], who was called that because it’s the name of a Mexican city where her parents met It’s pronounced “meh-ri-da”, (like a shortened version of [name]Meredith[/name]) rather than “meh-ree-dah”.
I don’t like place names being used as human names ([name]Merida[/name] is a town in Spain), but I can appreciate it, the [name]Mair[/name]-ee-dah pronunciation over Me-ri-dah. What I found interesting was that [name]Eulalia[/name], something of a guilty pleasure/too unfamiliar for real human use name, was from the town, and patron saint of [name]Barcelona[/name].
I don’t like it much, to be honest. I thought it was a disappointing choice for the Brave princess; there are so many Scottish names they could have chosen instead. Oh, well.
[name]One[/name] thing I don’t like about [name]Merida[/name] is that it sounds like a contraceptive brand to me, probably because it’s somewhat close to [name]Mirena[/name].
I honestly thought the first few times I saw the trailer that the princess in Brave was named [name]Meredith[/name], and was extremely disappointed when I saw [name]Merida[/name] on the IMDB page. I don’t like it at all, it sounds like someone cut off [name]Meredith[/name], which is a name I love.
As a name, I think it is OK, and works as a nickname for [name]Meredith[/name]. I wish they HAD chosen an actual Scottish name, but that’s unrelated.
If you like it enough to use it, I would wait until a couple months after the Brave DVD came out so that it wouldn’t seem like you were naming the kid after the movie.
I prefer the mair-EE-da prn, and I think it’s definitely useable
And I believe in Spanish speaking countries it would not be prn mer-ID-ah or Meh-ri-dah, because I’s are like E’s and E’s are like A’s
I have only watched disneys new movie brave, and from the moment i heard the princesses name…i fell in love with it and had to add it to my favourite names list. Although the only thing is, i cannot get myself to say it without putting on a scottish accent:D
For some reason, all I hear when I see this name is the French word “merde”; which I was always tol means “sh*t”. :-(. And I agree…wish they would have chosen a more Scottish name for the Pixar character.
It’s pretty, but I think there is a medication with a similar name? I saw the name Meridian mentioned in one the blogs here… do you like that? I thought it was pretty as well.
ETA: Meridia is a weight-loss medication… that’s what I was thinking of…
