Honest thoughts on Opal?

Hello! As the title states, I’m wondering what people’s first impressions and vibes are on the name [name_f]Opal[/name_f]. I know [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], [name_f]Gemma[/name_f], and [name_u]Jade[/name_u] sound very modern rn while [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] still feels very “old fashioned”. I love vintage clunky names but my DS does NOT. So I am wondering what yalls take is, the vibes and any connotations would be super helpful!

Thanks! -bee :honeybee:

I love [name_f]Opal[/name_f]! It’s magical, distinctive and lovely.

I think of it as exactly vintage clunky as does the general public still, from what I I can tell. I am definitely a name nerd all my life and in the minority on [name_f]Opal[/name_f] among people with more distinct taste in names like Nameberries. They tend to love it.

I love it and if I didn’t already have an aunt with the name it would be in my top 10 names for girls

I absolutely adore [name_f]Opal[/name_f]! :orange_heart: She’s sparky and sparkly and so very bright. Such a gorgeous choice. Her familiarity as a name lends to her being a familiar but special name. She is sooo charming.

I don’t like the sound and the look of the P, but the concept is cool.

Is that because the p points down while the other letters do not? [name_u]Or[/name_u]? (genuinely curious!)

I should have added that moonstones and Opals are very important to me, my wedding band is even a mix of both!

opal is definitely a favorite of mine!! i’ve never met one. my nameberry child with @marigold.solstice is opal gracie!! opal is sophisticated but playful, she watches fireworks on july 4th from the fire escape on her new york city apartment building, but not before making sure her 2 cats are in her arms watching the show with her.

and i’ve never met an old pearl, actually. one of my closest friends is pearl and we’re teenagers so it doesn’t feel all that old-fashioned to me.

That’s good to know!! Maybe [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] and [name_f]Opal[/name_f] will rise like other gem names

[name_f]Opal[/name_f] feels one of two vibes to me, either rebellious + glamorous little old lady offering you mints and escaping from her carers (and this feels specifically American to me, a [name_u]Brit[/name_u], so take it with a huge pinch of salt), or slightly new age nature child exploring the garden, moongazing, making up fairy tales. Opals the stones are so pretty, and look very magical, so it feels a bit otherworldly and kinda powerful.

I don’t love the sound but it is a sweet name. The stone is very unique!

I love the stone itself but I just don’t love saying the word - the second half gets swallowed and I want to open my mouth more - would rather say [name_f]Apple[/name_f] but even then). It’s otherwise sitting with [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] and Ruby; a small, cute and mighty name for an artistic, honourable and open-minded person. I see [name_f]Opal[/name_f] as having a strong but quiet sense of herself. I’m sure meeting an [name_f]Opal[/name_f] would help - it seems to be a happy-making name!

I haven’t met an opal either! I think if it became more used around me it would definitely help me feel more confident about it.

I love [name_f]Opal[/name_f]! I have several people in my life to whom opal stones are very special which makes me like the name even more. It also has a spunky children’s literature heroine in [name_f]Opal[/name_f] from Because of Winn-Dixie, which I loved when I was a kid!

[name_f]Opal[/name_f] to me can really be anyone. I definitely agree with above posters that I see [name_f]Opal[/name_f] being very drawn to nature, but outside of that I could see [name_f]Opal[/name_f] the shy, daydreaming bookworm, [name_f]Opal[/name_f] the hilarious soccer team superstar, or [name_f]Opal[/name_f] the quirky neighborhood do-good-er that marches to the beat of her own drum. (Or, anything else at all!)

I think [name_f]Opal[/name_f] is in a really sweet spot because it’s a very familiar word and name, but not popular. If you had an [name_f]Opal[/name_f], she would make it her own and add a new association to the name for people in her life! The name does feel a little quirky vintage, but not exactly “old-fashioned” to me. With the rise in popularity of the word name trend, I think she fits right in on your modern playground!

I love [name_f]Opal[/name_f] as a jeweller I am drawn to gem names but [name_f]Opal[/name_f] is one of my favourites because they’re so unique as no two opals are the same. I also love [name_f]Opaline[/name_f] and [name_f]Opalina[/name_f] for more elaborate versions.
You can’t go wrong with [name_f]Opal[/name_f]!
