Honesty about Olympia and Hermione

I love both [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] and [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]. As in really love them, even as a sibset. I don’t think either one is too much, but such individual, and interesting names, that are still familiar, and beautiful in sound and look. Personally the associations for both are huge pluses, and I love the feisty, adventurous, courageous image I get from both names. [name_m]Long[/name_m] story short they’re amazing (together and apart), and in my opinion completely usable. I think Liliy’s okay for [name_f]Olympia[/name_f], although I do prefer some of the more unusual nns for it (my favourite being [name_f]Pippi[/name_f]).

[name_f]Olympia[/name_f] and [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] are both gorgeous!
I love the nicknames [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] and [name_f]Lily[/name_f] for [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] - I don’t think [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is too far of a stretch, it sounds like something a two-year-old [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] would call herself. And also, there is nothing wrong with the Olympic Games. Sure, she’ll probably get comments, but it’s nothing tease-worthy. I say go for it, it’s beautiful!

I also love [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], but I am a huge Potterhead and people will assume that you are too. If that doesn’t bother you then fine. [name_f]IMO[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_m]Granger[/name_m] is an awesome role model for girls, but it might annoy you if it isn’t your reason behind the choice. Although I think people will accept it more if you already have an [name_f]Olympia[/name_f], as they are both Greek.

On your other question - if you live in [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] you might get a few questions but there’s nothing wrong with that. I can totally imagine blonde-haired blue-eyed sisters called [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] and [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]. I think you should go with what you love, both names are beautiful

[name_f]Olympia[/name_f] and [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] are beautiful separately and even more so as a sib set!
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Oly[/name_f] and [name_f]Pia[/name_f] as nicknames for [name_f]Olympia[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f] isn’t too far of a stretch but I prefer for the others more and [name_f]Maia[/name_f] (my-uh) for [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]

If you were to use [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] I wouldn’t use [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] or [name_f]Luna[/name_f] :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

[name_f]Olympia[/name_f] made it onto my list once but I took it off in fear that it was too ‘out there’. If I had the guts, I would definitely name a child it in the future! I don’t think [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is too far-fetched ([name_f]Olympia[/name_f] could shorten to [name_u]Olly[/name_u] and then [name_f]Lily[/name_f] can come from that) but it’s a slight stretch. I must admit that the Olympic Games crosses my mind whenever I think of [name_f]Olympia[/name_f], however it doesn’t bother me.

With [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], I don’t really like it as I’m English and I live in [name_f]England[/name_f], and this name would just get “is that from HP?” all the time regardless of whoever is asking it, because HP is so God damn popular here, let alone anywhere else in the world. I’m not a big fan of the herm beginning (no idea why) so I’d never use it but it’s just NMS.

I don’t think the origins of the names vs your own ethnic roots are really relevant at all. I like [name_f]Olympia[/name_f]. [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] isn’t really my style but there’s nothing wrong with the name. What’s got you worried about them? Both names are fine and are unlikely to cause inconvenience, if you really like it you shouldn’t care what other people think, considering they’re probably going to shut up about it once she is born.

[name_f]Olympia[/name_f] and [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] are beautiful names!
[name_f]Remember[/name_f] that is real life people have a different ‘take’ on what you name your child than the opinions you will get on sites like this - we are all for the general critique of names and meaning but [name_m]IRL[/name_m] the most important thing is that you love the name and a reason why you choose it (even if that is simply that you love the name).
I have relatives with ‘Seba$tian and C@mille’ without the punctuation obviously - everyone just loves the names, no one was like ‘I love the [name_m]French[/name_m] vibe’ or ‘Upper Class classics off the map’ or anything trying to classify their style (except me of course!)
The only potential ‘downside’ I could see would be that there is a HP character called [name_f]Olympe[/name_f] so using them both together might draw a link to the HP books you hadnt intended. But as long as you know this before deciding I think it wouldn’t make a difference to me
A lot of people replying seem to have fixed ideas about these names, but that may be their own associations, personally I have never met/known of an [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] but I like that it has a background/meaning, it sounds upbeat without feeling ‘flippant’ and I feel it would age well. Lots of interesting nicknames (personally I feel you could use anything you feel relates to the actual name or she might end up telling you her nickname by her actions or how she looks - i.e. [name_f]Pixie[/name_f], [name_m]Bear[/name_m] ect)
The only concern I would have is your reserve over the lymp part of the name - you will not be able to control how other people say the name and you may have to deal with this. Personally I would go to a local playground with the names written down and ask the mums to read them out - this will give you an idea of how the general public would pronounbce without you ‘coaching’ them particularly with your local accent. (Personally I can’t deal with sloppy pronouciation, this is why i can’t name my child e.g. Julliette cos most people are lazy and it sounds like [name_u]Julie[/name_u] -eh, or I had to give up [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] cos after a while all I could hear was eVANGEline and that sounded unappealing)
As for [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] - I associate it with [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m], a few aquaintances and HP - but maybe because that is because I was introduced to it first through a colleague of my Mothers, then [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m], then HP. I read A LOT and it may be just that other people are more influenced by blockbuster books but I would never say ‘oh you like [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] - you must have got that from the Matrix, or the simpsons or The [name_u]Percy[/name_u] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] Series’ Persephone in popular culture - Wikipedia
Before a baby is born/named in their viciinicy people are very happy to tell you that i.e. [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] is a fat girl name (NOT that I think that) but low and behold - name your child that and it soley becomes associated with this new sweet bundle of joy.
In summary I would always go for a name that I love, that embodies something you want for your child and has positive connections for you and your partner - so what if anyone has preconceptions about the name - thats their issue and they will let it go when they start to have a relationship with your child - if they don’t - do they really matter?
You have 2 classic and historic names in your aresonal already - go forth and multiply
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] you feel more confident about your choices - don’t forget it is your choices that matter in your childs life, starting with their name so don’t let others influence you too much, start honing your maternal skills early and trusting your instints

Thankyou for all your responses, and for putting to rest my fear that I am not allowed to use Greek names! I agree: There must be no [name_m]Fred[/name_m], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] and [name_f]Olympe[/name_f].

@cheshirekat I am racking my brains to think of what [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] relation there is in [name_u]Vic[/name_u], Aus?

@penguinkin Your reply is beautiful. I tend to prounounce things more ‘properly’ than others because of my parents accents, so trying it out on people we don’t know is very wise. I have a feeling that however much we love the full name, aussies will be aussies and use a nickname most of the time. I’m resigned to this. I do feel that people say Olympics “O-lim-pics” more than they say “O-lymp-pics” so in some ways they have practice with most of the name already.

As someone who has strong feelings but is overly aware of the crowd, I feel encouraged to go with what we love. Maybe we’ll cop a few comments, but in the end she will be the connotation of the name over anything else.

I adore the name [name_f]Olympia[/name_f]! Absolutely adore it. My favourite nn for it is [name_f]Polly[/name_f], which isn’t totally intuitive but I like to think it works  I also love [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], but I have regretfully confined her to the middle name spot. One of my favourite combos is [name_f]Margo[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f].
Good luck!

I love [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] (my favorite nn is [name_f]Lily[/name_f]-O), and I think it is totally usable. [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is very connected to the series but I love the association. I think any girl would. I think [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is usable. I think it all depends on whether the association is a turn off for you.

Oh [name_f]Polly[/name_f] and [name_f]Lily[/name_f]-O are so sweet! They are rivaling [name_u]Ollie[/name_u]!

Margot is a name we both want very much - but our surname is Marten with one letter different. We have thought that Margaret and Margot are out because of the Mar Mar issue.
