Honesty about Olympia and Hermione

My husband and I love two names for the first name spot - they are both Greek in origin, and we are both from english/scottish roots living in Australia. They also seem to be commonly disliked by the public, and we don’t know whether we should ignore the crowd or heed it’s warning?

Our favourite is [name_f]Olympia[/name_f]. I see strength, non-fussy femininity and rareness in this name. Potential nicknames being Oli, [name_u]Ollie[/name_u], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], or [name_f]Pia[/name_f].
But is the ‘lymp’ too strong? Is [name_f]Lily[/name_f] too far fetched? And is this name too related to the Olympic games to be fair?

The other name is [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]. The HP association is very strong, and although it was around long before the series, I only discovered it through the series. I wouldn’t be able to deny that I first read it in those books, but my wanting to use it is not because of [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_m]Granger[/name_m]. It has similar qualities to [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] in my mind.

Please share your thoughts, and make suggestions if you have them

[name_f]Olympia[/name_f] is a beautiful name, it really is a strong name, I don’t think [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is TOOOO far fetched, its a bit of a stretch but it definitely could work, i really love Oli/[name_u]Ollie[/name_u] for a nn, very cute. If I were named [name_f]Olympia[/name_f], I honestly think I would love it.

[name_f]Hermione[/name_f], although yes, also a gorgeous name, I just don’t ever see it having a non HP association, I feel everyone will think she was solely named [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] after a huge Potterhead. But if you truly love it, go for it.

It like [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] a lot, but have never been a fan of [name_f]Hermione[/name_f].

[name_u]Ollie[/name_u] is an adorable nickname for [name_f]Olympia[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Olympia[/name_f]! Instead of pronouncing it O-lymp-pia, I pronounce it as O-lim-pia, just to make it sound shorter+make it easier to say  Both names go together perfectly.

[name_f]Olympia[/name_f] reminds me a bit too much of the Olympics but I do like O- names ending in -ia as I find them to sound very grand ([name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], [name_f]Octavia[/name_f], etc.). I really like [name_f]Pia[/name_f] as a nn but [name_f]Lily[/name_f] would also work!

With [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] I go directly to [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] but she is a kick-ass character so any girl can consider themselves lucky to have her as a namesake. For [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] my favourite nn would be [name_f]Minnie[/name_f]!

I think if I had to pick one, I’d go for [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] simply because I don’t love the Olympics enough to “name my child after them” but I think [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] & [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] would make great sisters if you should have two girls in the future!

I think [name_f]Olympia[/name_f]'s actually pretty wearable these days, thanks to the popularity of [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is a bit of a stretch, but the other nns are great. Personally I don’t think it’s too tied to the olympics.

[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] will probably never be more wearable than it is now, so I say go for it! It’s a great, strong name with a fascinating history. [name_m]Will[/name_m] people assume you’re an HP fan? Yep. I don’t think that should be a dealbreaker, though! You can always tell people you got it from [name_u]Winter[/name_u]'s Tale.

I am loving your opinions - thankyou for saying yes to [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] when many seem to find it unattractive. Emphasising ‘lim’ over ‘limp’ is great. I have long feared people would think only of the Olympics, but Mt [name_m]Olympus[/name_m] is the origin of the games and the name.

I want to like [name_f]Octavia[/name_f] but just don’t warm to it, and my husband won’t have [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] because of the pedophelia connotation which is strong for him.

I suppose if I want [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], I just have to accept whatever HP comments that come with it. Not insurmountable.

I think they’re both stunning names. [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] especially I like, although I am loathe to have it as a first name on my list because it’s the name of my state’s capital city. It’s beautiful though and has so much great nickname potential, I’d love to see it used. Ditto with [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]. It’s got the HP association but honestly if you’re going to have a name attached to a character that much, at least it’s attached to a character most will agree is a great one.

The names would be very nice for sisters.

Ahh yes. Of course my child could move to the states, but in Australia there is at least no city with the name.

I would so love to use them as sister names, if we had two girls. But is that too much Greek for a decidedly non-greek family? We are both blonde and blue eyed.

I prefer [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] it’s gorgeous
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is a nice name but far too tied to the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] series to be useable in my opinion

I don’t think the Olympics are a bad association. It could even be a good association if you’re into sports and stuff.

I have to agree @dearestjules. I am artsy rather than sporty, but striving for ones best can’t be a bad thing.

[name_f]Olympia[/name_f] is pretty. I like the nm [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] best. I think [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is a little far stretched.

I think [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] will always be associated with HP. You will never stop being asked if that’s why you named her that.
I recently met a little girl named [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] and it was really weird to me to hear a little 2 year old be called that. That’s just my opinion. I would stick with [name_f]Olympia[/name_f], out of the two.

Thankyou for your [name_f]Lily[/name_f] opinion - my gut has the same feeling, although I would love it to work. [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] is adorable though!

[name_f]Olympia[/name_f] was our favourite but we worried if it was as clunky and GP as everyone thought, perhaps [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] would be better. Now, I am feeling empowered to stick with the one we love.

I would never use either - but as far as beauty of the name goes, I see the appeal in [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]. I don’t think you’ll be able to get past the HP association so I would pass for that reason. [name_f]Olympia[/name_f], to me sounds unattractive. I think of blimps & the olympics, and the [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] in [name_m]Washington[/name_m] State. I don’t see any reason not to use it other than that I just generally don’t care for it.

I know a girl named [name_f]Olympia[/name_f]. She goes by the much less fussy nn [name_f]Oly[/name_f]. I quite like both. [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], on the other hand, is unusable.

[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is struck off then.

[name_f]Olympia[/name_f] is one of my favorite names. Think [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] [name_f]Snow[/name_f] and Dukakis. I think of mountains and a time when the world is at peace playing together.

I like [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], but the association with HP is very strong.

I think [name_f]Olympia[/name_f] is beautiful, although difficult to carry. From your signature [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] I think would be better, or or the feminine [name_m]Aurelius[/name_m], [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] would be very pretty. Or possibly [name_f]Theodora[/name_f], [name_f]Thea[/name_f] is one of my favorite names, and would be a wonderful nickname.

I do worry it’s hard to carry especially when I see it on guilty pleasure lists, but then [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] and [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] which are both on our list just do not hold the same charm for me. I am daring to hope it can be worn.
