I would really love to honor my mother by using her name, [name_f]Brenda[/name_f], as a middle name. However, I’m having a really hard time finding names that flow nicely with it as most of my top names also end with an ‘ah’ sound.
Some of my favorites for style reference:
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Claudia[/name_f]
[name_f]Maeva[/name_f] (husband doesn’t like [name_f]Maeve[/name_f])
[name_f]Zelda[/name_f]
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f]
[name_f]Nell[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucille[/name_f]
[name_f]Ada[/name_f]
I would also say that my last name starts with an R so I would rather not have the first name start with an R.
I think having an a-ending middle name with [name_f]Brenda[/name_f] as a middle is a challenge. For example, [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] [name_f]Brenda[/name_f] or [name_f]Helena[/name_f] [name_f]Brenda[/name_f] both come out sounding like a rhyme or chant.
And yet it’s clear you love a-ending firsts as so many of us do.
I’d hate to say skip the firsts you love to use [name_f]Brenda[/name_f] as middle.
I wonder if [name_f]Brenda[/name_f] morphed into [name_f]Bryony[/name_f]? [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] [name_f]Bryony[/name_f], [name_f]Helena[/name_f] [name_f]Bryony[/name_f], [name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_f]Bryony[/name_f], [name_f]Nell[/name_f] [name_f]Bryony[/name_f]?
I have a similar issue when trying to pair my mom’s name as an honor. I decided to use a shortened form of the name without the ending “a”.
Maybe you could use [name_f]Bren[/name_f] or [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] and it would be easier to pair with your favorites?
Lucille [name_f]Brenda[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Brenda[/name_f] flow beautifully, though if popularity is a problem then maybe [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] from your list? [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] is popular but still elegant and unique!
I’m kinda liking [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] [name_f]Brenda[/name_f] more now that people have mentioned in, but I’m really not likening [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] [name_f]Brenda[/name_f]. I really like the name [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] however it’s a used family name and I don’t want to use it. [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is a name my brother has claimed since my maiden name is [name_m]Brown[/name_m] and he likes the nn [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]. I think my favorites so far from the listed above are [name_f]Florence[/name_f] [name_f]Brenda[/name_f] and [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] [name_f]Brenda[/name_f] (Though when it comes to [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] names I think I like [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] best). Thank you all for the suggestions so far I’m excited for more options.
I always think the honor/significance is more important than the flow for a first-middle as no one other than you and your partner will probably ever say the names together.
So my advice is not skip out on a name you love because it doesn’t flow perfectly with [name_f]Brenda[/name_f].
Buttttt- I love honor names with a twist because ultimately the meaning is what you make it… so shortening [name_f]Brenda[/name_f] to [name_f]Bren[/name_f](n) or [name_u]Ren[/name_u] or anything tied to it to make it flow better is also a great option in my opinion.
I love the idea of using [name_f]Bren[/name_f] or [name_u]Ren[/name_u] as a middle name. Works well with names you like such as [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] and [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f].
I love [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f], [name_f]Claudia[/name_f], [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], and [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] - But I feel like these names with Ds in them do not flow with [name_f]Brenda[/name_f] As you said, it is a bit of a tough one!
I think [name_f]Helena[/name_f] [name_f]Brenda[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] [name_f]Brenda[/name_f] are my favorites!!
I agree, so many names with Ds don’t flow well with [name_f]Brenda[/name_f]. Would you consider [name_f]Brenna[/name_f]? It’s a bit softer. [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] [name_f]Brenna[/name_f] or [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] [name_f]Brenna[/name_f] would be lovely.
I think breaking up the syllables helps.
Like [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_f]Brenda[/name_f]. [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] [name_f]Brenda[/name_f]. [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] [name_f]Brenda[/name_f] ([name_f]Cate[/name_f]!). I thinking having a harder sound(s) in the first name to hold up to the B-R-D in [name_f]Brenda[/name_f] can help flow, especially if you go with a name that ends in “a.” [name_f]Arcadia[/name_f] and [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] strike me as working well. [name_f]Victoria[/name_f].
But my favorite idea is leaning into that B hard, and going with [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]/Beatrice.
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Brenda[/name_f] R—.
@EdgeOfTheMeadow I really love [name_f]Leonie[/name_f] [name_f]Brenda[/name_f] and [name_f]Coralea[/name_f] [name_f]Brenda[/name_f] (though I would probably spell it [name_f]Coralie[/name_f]). Also [name_f]Loxley[/name_f] is a darling name I really like it! Thank you for the suggestions!
I noticed [name_f]Helena[/name_f] on your list, What are [name_f]Helene[/name_f] [name_f]Brenda[/name_f]? it is rather unusual, and that is why I like it.
