Horace?

Would you consider naming your son [name]Horace[/name], nn Horrie?

I love the idea, it would be after my grandfather, but everyone I mention it to thinks I’m crazy.

Our bub is due in [name]August[/name], my girls name option is currently [name]Fern[/name]. He/she will be sister/brother to [name]Oscar[/name] [name]Graeme[/name] [name]Ignatius[/name] and [name]Nora[/name] [name]Lilian[/name] [name]Celeste[/name].

Lol. I’m taking the silence as a no. Which I suppose I was kind of expecting. I’ll keep it on my list, for now, keeping in mind that it is unlikely to be well received!

[name]Horace[/name] is not quite my style, but some posters on here may like that it is so vintage, quirky, and underused. The nickname Horrie doesn’t sound nice to my ear, along the lines of “horrid,” “hairy,” and worst of all, “whore-y.” “[name]Ace[/name]” or even “[name]Racer[/name]” might be safer nickname options. I think [name]Horace[/name] would DEFINITELY be a cool and different middle name option, especially since it would honor family. The more I look at it, the more I think I would kind of like to see it as a first name…on someone else’s child, not my own. Go for it.

I personally don’t like it but in a way it does ring cute especially with the nickname “Horrie.” If you are in doubt maybe the middle spot is the best place to put it.

101 Dalmatians is one of my favourite films and [name]Horace[/name] is one of the bad guys from it, so for me it makes me dislike the name quite a lot. Not wild about Horrie, but if you like [name]Horace[/name] then why not? I think it goes nicely with [name]Oscar[/name] and [name]Nora[/name] too

[name]Oscar[/name] and [name]Nora[/name] are sweetly old fashioned. [name]Horace[/name] is fusty and dusty and just plain bad, especially next to those two. I think Horrie is a terrible nickname too, sorry.

I don’t like [name]Horace[/name] at all. It sounds like horror, horse, hoarse. Horrie is even worse. [name]Orrie[/name] would be a little better. [name]Nora[/name] and [name]Oscar[/name] are vintage but completely likable. [name]Horace[/name]? Not so much. I think there are some names that don’t need to make a comeback. Because it is a family name, I would keep it as a middle. Maybe [name]Horatio[/name]?

Why not choose the more stylish [name]Horatio[/name]? It’s more user friendly with the “o” ending. [name]Horace[/name] sounds so depressing to me and I’m a fan of vintage names. With [name]Horatio[/name], you can honour your grandfather and the name is still be unique enough for your son.

Ooh [name]Horatio[/name]! Good one. [name]Horace[/name] is horrid imo. The only positive connection I have to it is [name]Horace[/name] Hardwick in Top [name]Hat[/name].
Horrie just sounds like “whore-y.” If I think about it a little harder, I hear “hoary frost,” which is nicer.

I like it! It has history for you, easy to spell and pronounce and I’d day no fustier than [name]Angus[/name], [name]Humphrey[/name] or [name]Lachlan[/name]. I like the idea of the nn [name]Race[/name] or [name]Ace[/name] too.

whore race.

[name]Horace[/name] is defiantly not my style. Maybe something like [name]August[/name] or [name]Henry[/name] would be a a better choice.

It’s kinda fun to say, but to me it is just two very unfortunate sounds put together: whore and a$$. And you know that would be a problem in school. So, no, I would definitely not ever use this name, except maybe for a pet, or as a middle or better yet, second middle name.

Not even a little bit, and especially not with that nickname. It brings to mind the words ‘whore’ and ‘hoary’ (the former association being the real deal-breaker, and the latter being a word I most frequently hear used to describe an old man’s beard). However, my great-great-grandpa, I think it is, was [name]Horace[/name] nn Hod; I could get behind using Horace with that nn. Actually, I really kind of dig Hod a lot. I googled it and a lot of the results were old-timey baseball players, which was pretty cute.

Horace has the same fusty, vintage feel that I get from [name]Oscar[/name], so they’d make pretty cool sibs, along with [name]Nora[/name] (& [name]Fern[/name], which is great). I do agree with pp that it could also make a rad mn, and I like the suggestion of [name]Horatio[/name], if you’re into that.

[name]Horatio[/name] is an awesome name… [name]Horace[/name] is the kind of name you could pull off if you’re uber cool but it would be hard for most kids to wear! You could put [name]Horace[/name] on the birth very though and use [name]Ace[/name] as nn! I think [name]Ace[/name] is a name a boy would love to have but it’s not quite substantial by itself! I think [name]Horace[/name] could potentially make a comeback but its not quite there yet! I have the same issue with [name]Beresford[/name] (family name)… We are half thinking of using it to honour a special family member and using nn [name]Bear[/name] but most people I tell are horrified  I think we will use it just in the middle!

[name]Horace[/name] is alright, but [name]Horatio[/name] is undeniably cooler. Horrie is terrible though.

I don’t hate [name]Horace[/name] by itself, but as a sibset with [name]Oscar[/name] and [name]Nora[/name], I feel like I’m hearing the same O and R sounds repeated across 3 names. And sorry :frowning: really don’t like Horrie as a nickname.

I don’t like it personally…
