Hot Takes? 🤭

so interesting to see someone with a different take on this! my name is also a rare spelling of a popular name, and I absolutely hate meeting people with my name in general. it stresses me out because I feel like I should be friends with them but I really don’t want to be because i find it too awkward to be friends with someone who has the same name. I’ve never actually met someone with my spelling but I think it would be even worse. the one unique thing about my name is the spelling—it’s my spelling—and I’d hate meeting someone who took that away from me.

That is so interesting to think about! I tend to be more introverted and so finding out I have something in common with someone kind of helps me have something to talk about haha :joy:.

I’ve only met one other person with my name and it was the instructor of an exercise class. She was giving me the classic speech ā€œoh that’s my name but I spell it -ā€œ when I said ā€œMe tooā€. The look on her face was priceless :joy:.

But I totally get loving that your name has a unique spelling. It always makes me feel special :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

See, I get your reasoning here, but as a Charlotte, here are my two cents:

Yeah, that totally makes sense! When I first met another Charlotte my age, first grade me was so excited! It was like we were kindred spirits or something. And I totally love the idea of my future kids being able to have the same experience, but after meeting so. many. Charlottes, it doesn’t really feel like my name any more, if that makes sense. Like, when so many people have the same name as, it’s not special to meet someone with it, because it’s just another place you’re first-name-last-initial. It’s honestly kind of tiring whenever I meet another Charlotte. (So I just introduce myself as Charlie now :woman_shrugging:)
Reading that back to myself, that literally made no sense, but basically what I’m trying to say is that there are plenty of drawbacks to popular names too. :slightly_smiling_face:

[name_f]My[/name_f] hot take is I’ve seen users on here talk about the Hot Takes thread like it’s some warzone full of threats and insults and… I don’t find it that bad?? [name_m]Even[/name_m] when there’s active disagreements? Maybe I’ve just been on the Internet too long, but the Hot Takes thread at its worst is like… still pretty tame to me.

Same. my given name was very common and I think that’s part of the reason why I don’t really identify with it. Most people knew me as the second or third person with my name (ā€œthe other personā€), not just as my name.
It also can make for very awkward situations when people are talking and they call your name but they mean someone else

Oh I can definitely see how that is a drawback! And who knows maybe my kids will prefer to go by a nickname or maybe an entirely different name. It will be interesting to see . [name_f]My[/name_f] sister has a name that is growing in popularity and she doesn’t love meeting other people with her name. She won’t even let me use it in the future as a way to honor her lol :joy:.

[name_f]Margo[/name_f] looks too casual and like a nickname but [name_f]Margot[/name_f] looks too formal

Naming a child after their birth month is a lot weirder than naming them after a random month

[name_f]Hailey[/name_f] is my least favorite spelling of the name. I like every other kre8tiv spelling more than [name_f]Hailey[/name_f]. [name_f]Hayleigh[/name_f], [name_f]Hailee[/name_f], [name_f]Haeley[/name_f], etc. I dunno why, but I just don’t like [name_f]Hailey[/name_f]!

When it gets too bad posts can get deleted quite quickly. I remember one time a user’s first post was very racist, but neither the post nor the user stayed long.
My typical reading experience when there’s a lot of new posts is that you can slowly see it build up, then three deleted posts, and then a reminder my one of the mods to keep it civil.

I don’t think I could ever name a child a month name tbh  I like them in theory, but to me it’s equally weird to name a child after their birth month than to name them after a month they have no connections to. I don’t really think about it when other people have month names, I just can’t see myself doing that.

[name_f]My[/name_f] birth name is extremely common too, and there would sometimes be a few with my name in a class. One time I stopped responding to it, due to a more ā€œpopular girlā€ in my class constantly being called by other kids, and me turning around and feeling like an idiot :joy: Also it gets shortened without fail, which I dislike.

I am not a fan of [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]. So many people on here seem to like it but I’ve never seen the appeal :woman_shrugging:t5:

Absolutely agreed! I’ve never enjoyed it either…
