To me they SOUND cool but just too surnamey to feel like actual names if that makes sense
i donât even know if this is a hot take or a rant, but iâm always so confused when i see people arguing over minor pronunciation differences like babes iâm sorry ah-na and an-ah are the same to me. to reference nightâs recent example, leen-dah and lyn-dah are the same to me! thereâs a tiny difference but itâs so small that if i hear it i donât care, so iâm always left so confused with some of the pronunciation polls on nameberry where people will be arguing vehemently over if itâs an âeeâ sound vs âihâ sound, an âauâ sound vs an âawâ sound or something
Maybe LIHN-dah better explains it to you than LYN-dah? Though I agree itâs confusing a lot of the time I just try and hope for the best
HAH itâs okay i appreciate the attempt </3 i think iâm simply broken. ears donât work like they used to (this is a joke)
Iâm one of those people. And also, LYN-dah and LEEN-dah are hugely different to me, they can never sound the same
I dislike when people name their children long names just to call them by nicknames and never use their full name. There are many lovely nicknames, but why not name your child just [name_f]Beth[/name_f] if youâre never going to call her [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]?
For me, a nickname name just doesnât feel complete. I love the nickname Vivi but I would never put that on a kidâs birth certificate because itâs nice to have a name to fall back on, especially in different settings. I have a friend called Margaret who goes by Margaret in professional settings but with friends and family we all call her Margie (hard g) and Mags. I wouldnât put Mags on a birth certificate, since I donât see it as a stand-alone name. Beth is a little different since it does have history as a stand-alone name and is commonly used as such. I see your point there, but for some names like Theodore nn Theo or Teddy, Iâd rather put Theodore on the birth certificate. It just seems more complete to me
I agree in a lot of cases, but itâs different when you plan on calling your child only by that nickname. And I definitely donât agree that, like a lot of people have said on here in the past, you need to give your child a longer name to give your child âoptionsâ. That would mean that every child with a shorter name without a ton of options has been sold short.
I think almost any nickname can work as a full name.
Shorter names can totally be sweet! I love Esme but not Esmeralda. I wouldnât use Esmeralda just because itâs a longer name. It really just depends on the name. Options are nice, but definitely not required or needed
It depends on the name. Some nicknames are definitely too cutesy to stand alone imo (Kitty, [name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] type).
I personally, am named one of those really cutesy twee feminine names, and I feel it has greatly short changed me. It doesnt fit, it hasnt grown with me, and i feel it changes othersâ perceptions of me.I now choose to go by the standard long form of my name. [name_u]Kitty[/name_u] may be fine with being [name_u]Kitty[/name_u] when sheâs seven, but its nice for her to have [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] and [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and [name_f]Kathy[/name_f] to fall back on should she choose. Nobody blinks an eye when [name_f]Juliana[/name_f] says she wants to go by [name_u]Juli[/name_u], but there is a weird reaction when [name_u]Juli[/name_u] says sheâd rather be [name_f]Juliana[/name_f]. Please save your children the conflict.
Another aspect is how it flows with the last name! [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_m]Jones[/name_m] flows a whole lot better than [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_m]Jones[/name_m], so parents may opt for the former even if they plan on calling her [name_f]Rose[/name_f]!
i think it depends on the person some people will hate having a nickname name, some will love it - i wish i had a âcutesyâ nickname name! and a lot of names that others have mentioned like evie or margie feel perfectly usable to me. you never know what your child will prefer so i donât think itâs worth discussing whether theyâll wish they had a longer name to fall back on or not
Found a more suitable thread to share my angst lol!
Iâve never really understood this take because I have literally never known a single person that exclusively goes by a nn. Maybe itâs just the culture where Iâm from, but even the people that go by a nn 99% of the time, thereâs still at least one person that uses their full name.
Also, sometimes people donât intend to only use the nn, but thatâs just what happens as the kid grows up, and sometimes they intend to only use a nn but they end up using the full name anyway because it just fits better. Honestly, I think it makes more sense to call Katherine Kitty most of the time than it does to call Kitty Katherine.
In other words, itâs like insurance for me. I would be really annoyed if I needed it and it wasnât there. But not needing it and having it anyway is not really an inconvenience.
[name_f]My[/name_f] hot take of the day: I honestly like the name [name_f]Mildred[/name_f]! I could see why people would only hear âmildewâ or âdreadâ, but I think it has the spunky, clunky-cool granny flair of [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] and [name_f]Nancy[/name_f]!
On nicknames, I did used to be firmly in the âuse the name you intend on usingâ camp. I still am, but to a lesser extent. If you like and intend to use the full name, but have some nickname options you like, or the nickname comes organically, then that makes sense to me. I personally go mostly by my nickname now, but I do like having my full name as an option. That being said, I am surprised by some names that are considered âtoo nicknameyâ. For example I wouldnât assume [name_f]Sally[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_u]Kitty[/name_u], [name_u]Izzy[/name_u], or [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] (to name a few) were short for anything, so they definitely donât fall into that category for me. I do live in the UK might be part of it though.
[name_f]My[/name_f] hot take:
The diminutive [name_f]Trixie[/name_f] is better then [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
Trixie> [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f].
That is all.
yes!! mildred has been a favourite of mine for years i love how you can have both the sweet millie and the spunky red as nicknames, and the meaning âgentle strengthâ is so incredible!
This is me with [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] and [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f]!
I love [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] too!! Annie-Pru is definitely one of my favorite double-barrel names I would def use it as a nickname for [name_f]Johanna[/name_f] [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] or [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] !
