Hot Takes? 🤭

I’m glad you said that, because for the longest time I felt like I was the only one. I’ll take Kip over Kit any day.

i’ve recently warmed up to kit (m) because i met one, and that’s all it takes for me to like a name  but for the longest time i couldn’t get my head around it - i could only think of the word kitten!

I just… don’t like [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f].
I just see Oat-phelia. [name_u]Or[/name_u] Oaf-elia. [name_u]Or[/name_u] something else. Why do I see so many bad things in a beautiful name that I don’t want to see?!?!
No to offend any [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] lovers, I want to love it too!
[name_u]Or[/name_u] to offend oatmeal lovers. :bowl_with_spoon:
I know it’s a wonderful breakfast

It reminds me of jet-lag!

I can see Jagger being a fast-fashion, one-and-done name that doesn’t get used much later on. I also can’t help but think of that one song from like 10 years ago: ā€œGot the moves like Jagger, got the moooo-ooooves like Jagger!ā€ Maybe because I was in high school at its peak haha

my hot take for today is that alizabeth & alyzabeth are the superior spellings of elizabeth in my opinion :relieved: it freshens up the name a little bit!

My hottt take of the day:
while I don’t love many harsh, masculine-sounding names on girls (like Blair or Alex, for example) for me, I dont have a problem with them…execpt…

Collins.

How is that a name? And how is that a girls name?
I mean, this is ā€˜Collins’ in my head so like…

Pride and Prejudice 1995 Photo: Pride and Prejudice | Pride and prejudice, Mr collins, Jane austen movies

you want to name your daughter after him?

Something to think about.

Anyways, that’s all. Thank you for coming to my rant-y ted talk, have a good day.

yes!! i normally prefer the more ā€œtraditionalā€ spellings of names but i really dislike elizabeth for some reason. objectively, it’s a great name. i think i also don’t like it because there’s a character in the sims 4 that is named eliza and she’s quite unpleasant so it ruins it for me. i love alizabeth though!

Now, you put some respect on Ms [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] Pancakes’ name :triumph: /j

she’s so mean to bob though :sob: and in my very first save i ever played she was autonomously mean to my sim and i could never forgive her after that tbh

It’s a combination of [name_m]Mick[/name_m] [name_u]Jagger[/name_u] and that song (which is about him) why people use it as a first name. Hopefully it will fall down to zero.

i agree, and i’m so glad someone put that into words! i know my name means everything to my mom, which makes me adore it, but if she simply had said ā€œyou are named emma because it was #1ā€ i’d be a little less in love, i think :heartpulse:

I think this comes down to your definition of what is something that you ā€œcare aboutā€. My favourite names don’t have specific meanings to me, the way you might define them. No religious or otherwise spiritual connection, no family connection, no connection to any of my hobbies. Some of the nature ones do have a vague connection to my love and appreciation for the natural world, but it’s not in your face.

What gives them meaning to me is that I like them. Because when I hear them I imagine things that are meaningful to me. Amaya makes me think of summer sun and orange peels, Harvey makes me think of cuddling under blankets and reading fairy tales. Little things about the world that are beautiful and important to me. And more importantly when I hear them I imagine my future children and that fills me with warmth and love, and is that not meaning enough on its own? In a way, isn’t it as meaningful if not more meaningful than using a name because of a family member, or one of your hobbies, or anything of the sort? To me, at least, it is!

That said, I agree with you that there’s no reason to dislike meaningful names for children. I think there’s something to be said about names that put pressure on children to conform to that meaning - let’s use the out-there example of the name Wisdom, for example, or something like Theopiste from my own language (Greek name that translates to God-believing), but in general I think meaning can be a good thing to have! But what constitutes as meaning is personal and an ā€œobviousā€ meaning like a Biblical name or a name that’s the occupation your great grandpa had is not inherently superior to subtle meaning, if you ask me!

Ooh, I suppose I misunderstood your example with [name_u]Paxton[/name_u] vs. [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]! I thought the comparison was between a name with direct meaning versus a name that you just liked for the sound/imagery. But I completely agree, it can be really lovely to know that thought was put into your name! :yellow_heart: I don’t personally like my name, but I can at least appreciate why it was chosen, so I understand where you’re coming from!

For the record, when and if I ever use the word ā€œpretentiousā€ to describe my feelings towards a name, it has nothing to do with how much meaning it has for the people who chose it. It’s my perception of the name. It’s not pretentious because it has meaning to people, it’s pretentious because the impression it gives is that they are trying to stuff so much meaning into it that it comes off as unnatural, overworked, and self important.
And if I was looking for opinions on names or combos, I would want people to tell me if the impression those names/combos gave was unnatural, overworked, or self important. I may not listen in the end, but I’d still want to know.

@seawillow That’s extremely thoughtful of you, [name_f]Theodosia[/name_f], and like you said, I don’t think your post was so offensive that it needed to be deleted but I respect your decision all the same! I really wasn’t commenting on the main point of your post, it was rather just an unfortunate implication / the other side of the coin kind of a situation. I’ll delete my response to you because I don’t want it to make it sound like your original post was worse than it was (while also acknowledging that you aren’t asking me to do that at all :slightly_smiling_face:)

OMG SAME.

I don’t think this is a super unpopular opinion in general, but on nameberry it might be: I’d much rather use two names I love in a combo even if they don’t flow perfectly than choose a middle I like more mildly just because it sounds good with the first name.
