Hot Takes? 🤭

Hot take: In the current cultural zeitgeist, [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is undivorceable from the [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] character despite its historic mythological and literary usage.

I think as far as my generation and those above me go that’s true, but tbh whenever I talk to kids (which I do for my job sometimes) I’m surprised how unfamiliar they often are with [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] - the Hunger Games, [name_u]Percy[/name_u] [name_u]Jackson[/name_u] and the Unfortunate Events series seem to have a far more prominent place in their cultural ecosystem. Maybe the sample I’ve spoken to are unusual but I do slightly feel that HP is fading a bit from a global phenomenon to just one of a few successful children’s franchises?
Also tbh I think it depends a bit on class - I’m friends with a very old money [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] and according to her no-one ever made the [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] connection bc it’s still used as a family name in those types of circles. Amongst us mere mortals the connection is probably stronger.
Phew turns out I have quite a lot of thoughts on the name [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] :joy:

see i would’ve assumed that too, but i had someone with a really rare, near identical name to hermione in some of my classes (only one letter off, it sounded the same as hermione when you said it quickly) and she never got harry potter comments at all, which totally changed my mind on its usability!

Hermione is an interesting one. The HP association is too strong for me personally, but as @Mary_Rose said, it is considered to be a classic name in some circles. Your child wouldn’t be teased at school, but you would get ā€œlike from Harry Potter?ā€ while talking to adults. There are also people who didn’t care for the story despite being in the demographic, so they wouldn’t think twice about the name.

Is it odd to say that physical appearance could also affect whether or not someone makes the connection? I think if a girl looked similar to Emma Watson, you’d be more inclined to (if you know it) compared to someone who looks nothing like the character.

[name_f]My[/name_f] Hot Take Complete with long story i might post somewhere else. (drum roll).

I’m crushing on [name_f]Unice[/name_f] with [name_u]Ice[/name_u] as an nn

[name_m]Long[/name_m] story

It’s after an internet nickname from , i think early 2022, that I wanted to humanize. I needed a name that begins with uni and nothing I found cut it, until i discovered the art of removing letters from names. So Eunice-E=Unice. (Una is too short and… University exists.)

The character for the username was a female with a dark and mysterious, slightly, i’d say, gender neutral image. I have feminised the character over the years, but not too much. She became really cute and [name_f]Unice[/name_f] fits her perfectly.

[name_f]Unice[/name_f] [name_f]Aerith[/name_f] [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] is a :kissing_heart:  :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: combo.

very hot take: how many ā€˜__ name of the day’ threads do we really need? :grimacing:

I’ve been thinking this for a while :face_with_peeking_eye: like I get it it’s fun, and some of them make sense like the GP thread or Multicultural thread and some of the others, but we don’t need a (making one up) [name_u]Nature[/name_u] NOTD thread, they just end up clogging up the whole page

so glad it’s not just me! Isn’t the whole point of name of the day is that it’s just a name?! :smiling_face_with_tear:

I wholeheartedly agree, and I’ve honestly been feeling a tad guilty about my contribution to the OTD obsession! :joy:

So many that it is even a bit scary

NOTD should just get its own category.
tbh I had ignored these threads for the longest time and only recently started using them because I’m trying to post more about names and NOTD is the easiest way to do so.

typically when I try to edit my list or cut combos it’s 5 stages of grief, I get transported through time to when I loved that name, and can’t make any decisions

but when I add them to the ā€˜adopt a combo’ thread (which has no real meaning or authority in a court of law) I’m giggling and kicking my feet while hitting the backspace key. it’s cathartic and all the dreamed up versions of names past get to exist happily with someone else :love_letter:

[name_u]Strong[/name_u] agree on [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] but the rest of that ranking is a disgrace :joy:
[name_u]Rose[/name_u] > [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] >>> [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] > [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] >>>>> [name_f]Rosalia[/name_f]

Utterly perfect ranking [name_f]Mary[/name_f] I concur!

[name_f]Nelle[/name_f] > [name_f]Nell[/name_f], something about [name_f]Nell[/name_f] without an e looks wrong to me.

There is nothing wrong with wanting your son’s name to just be a boy’s name, and there is nothing wrong with wanting your daughter’s name to just be a girl’s name. Obviously, you can’t stop the march of time and things are going to change, but I really don’t think it’s fair to push back on people who express frustration with the demographics of a name they chose changing in this way, they have a right to their feelings about it.

Really? He wrote ā€œgetting better all the timeā€ back in 1968 and was in relationships with multiple non-white women. Interesting take though.
