Hot take: In the current cultural zeitgeist, [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is undivorceable from the [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] character despite its historic mythological and literary usage.
I think as far as my generation and those above me go thatās true, but tbh whenever I talk to kids (which I do for my job sometimes) Iām surprised how unfamiliar they often are with [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] - the Hunger Games, [name_u]Percy[/name_u] [name_u]Jackson[/name_u] and the Unfortunate Events series seem to have a far more prominent place in their cultural ecosystem. Maybe the sample Iāve spoken to are unusual but I do slightly feel that HP is fading a bit from a global phenomenon to just one of a few successful childrenās franchises?
Also tbh I think it depends a bit on class - Iām friends with a very old money [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] and according to her no-one ever made the [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] connection bc itās still used as a family name in those types of circles. Amongst us mere mortals the connection is probably stronger.
Phew turns out I have quite a lot of thoughts on the name [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
see i wouldāve assumed that too, but i had someone with a really rare, near identical name to hermione in some of my classes (only one letter off, it sounded the same as hermione when you said it quickly) and she never got harry potter comments at all, which totally changed my mind on its usability!
Hermione is an interesting one. The HP association is too strong for me personally, but as @Mary_Rose said, it is considered to be a classic name in some circles. Your child wouldnāt be teased at school, but you would get ālike from Harry Potter?ā while talking to adults. There are also people who didnāt care for the story despite being in the demographic, so they wouldnāt think twice about the name.
Is it odd to say that physical appearance could also affect whether or not someone makes the connection? I think if a girl looked similar to Emma Watson, youād be more inclined to (if you know it) compared to someone who looks nothing like the character.
[name_f]My[/name_f] Hot Take Complete with long story i might post somewhere else. (drum roll).
Iām crushing on [name_f]Unice[/name_f] with [name_u]Ice[/name_u] as an nn
[name_m]Long[/name_m] story
Itās after an internet nickname from , i think early 2022, that I wanted to humanize. I needed a name that begins with uni and nothing I found cut it, until i discovered the art of removing letters from names. So Eunice-E=Unice. (Una is too short and⦠University exists.)
The character for the username was a female with a dark and mysterious, slightly, iād say, gender neutral image. I have feminised the character over the years, but not too much. She became really cute and [name_f]Unice[/name_f] fits her perfectly.
[name_f]Unice[/name_f] [name_f]Aerith[/name_f] [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] is a
combo.
very hot take: how many ā__ name of the dayā threads do we really need?
Iāve been thinking this for a while like I get it itās fun, and some of them make sense like the GP thread or Multicultural thread and some of the others, but we donāt need a (making one up) [name_u]Nature[/name_u] NOTD thread, they just end up clogging up the whole page
so glad itās not just me! Isnāt the whole point of name of the day is that itās just a name?!
I wholeheartedly agree, and Iāve honestly been feeling a tad guilty about my contribution to the OTD obsession!
I genuinely dont understand what those mean at all. I try to avoid them at this point
So many that it is even a bit scary
NOTD should just get its own category.
tbh I had ignored these threads for the longest time and only recently started using them because Iām trying to post more about names and NOTD is the easiest way to do so.
typically when I try to edit my list or cut combos itās 5 stages of grief, I get transported through time to when I loved that name, and canāt make any decisions
but when I add them to the āadopt a comboā thread (which has no real meaning or authority in a court of law) Iām giggling and kicking my feet while hitting the backspace key. itās cathartic and all the dreamed up versions of names past get to exist happily with someone else
[name_f]Rosa[/name_f] >>>>>>>>> [name_f]Rosalia[/name_f] > [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] > [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] > [name_u]Rose[/name_u]
[name_f]Rosa[/name_f] is so beautiful and deserves more love!!
[name_u]Strong[/name_u] agree on [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] but the rest of that ranking is a disgrace
[name_u]Rose[/name_u] > [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] >>> [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] > [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] >>>>> [name_f]Rosalia[/name_f]
Utterly perfect ranking [name_f]Mary[/name_f] I concur!
[name_f]Nelle[/name_f] > [name_f]Nell[/name_f], something about [name_f]Nell[/name_f] without an e looks wrong to me.
There is nothing wrong with wanting your sonās name to just be a boyās name, and there is nothing wrong with wanting your daughterās name to just be a girlās name. Obviously, you canāt stop the march of time and things are going to change, but I really donāt think itās fair to push back on people who express frustration with the demographics of a name they chose changing in this way, they have a right to their feelings about it.
Really? He wrote āgetting better all the timeā back in 1968 and was in relationships with multiple non-white women. Interesting take though.
