How are names ranked if two are tied for popularity?

Let’s say [name_f]Reignbeau[/name_f] and Elohdi are tied for top girls’ in the US. How does the SSA decide which one is first and which is second?

I’m pretty sure they go in alphabetical order then!

Yep so for 2020, [name_m]Ephraim[/name_m] is listed as number #1000 in USA’s SSA list but it is actually tied with [name_m]Jerome[/name_m], [name_m]Karim[/name_m], [name_m]Meir[/name_m], and [name_m]Yahya[/name_m] with 209 babies but they’re not shown on SSA’s top 1000 list because E is first alphabetically. I don’t feel like this method is fair but that’s how they do it.

For girls, [name_u]Kadence[/name_u] is #1000 but it’s actually tied with [name_f]Belle[/name_f] (#999) and [name_f]Kiera[/name_f] (#1001) at 252 babies

Previous people have answered for the US, but in the UK they are given the same rank, and the number after that is skipped. For example, exactly 707 boys were named Charles and Finn in England and Wales in 2019, so the chart looks like

85 - Ollie
86 - Charles
86 - Finn
88 - Felix

This happens a lot once you get past about rank 200 or so, and past 300 pretty much all names share a rank with at least one other name. For example, 19 names share the rank 825!

That’s how I wish the US would do it; give them all the same rank instead of doing it alphabetically

They’ll both be in first and then the next name will be third

i know i’m not the first person to give this answer, but it’s different in the us and e/w (also possibly the rest of the uk, but i don’t know for certain) !!

in the usa, they are ranked alphabetically, so a name will be ranked higher than an equally popular one if it’s earlier in the alphabet.

however, in e/w, those names tie. this means that, for example, there is no girls’ name ranked 1000th, but 22 names tied for position 1017.

(and for what it’s worth i’m not speculating, i’m correct)

[name_m]Just[/name_m] checked and it’s the same in [name_u]Scotland[/name_u] as it is in [name_f]England[/name_f] and [name_m]Wales[/name_m]! For example

18 - [name_f]Jessica[/name_f]
19 - [name_u]Aria[/name_u]
19 - [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]
21 - [name_u]Harper[/name_u]

I edited and redited my original post like 8 times because I realised it might be different in [name_u]Scotland[/name_u] lol but it isn’t! Fun fact, in [name_u]Scotland[/name_u] there are 2860 names tied for place 1488 (used by one baby!).

E/W means England/Wales! We have a separate baby name list to Scotland and Northern Ireland so there’s actually no one ‘UK’ list :grinning:
