How common is Adelaide?

[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] is flying up the popularity charts, from #924 in 2006 to #343 in 2012. I’ve loved the name for several years, partially because of its rarity. The question is, how common is [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] really? [name_m]How[/name_m] many Adelaides do you know, and how old are they?

My view would be…not very. I’ve never met an [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]. Of course, it’s different in Australia because one of our major cities is called [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] (in fact, the one I live in). I think it’s a great name, but I’d absolutely never name my daughter [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] because people would assume I was honouring the city.

We have an [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] who is 5 years old. We have met and/or heard of a couple other young Adelaides, though none of them live near us. As far as I can tell, the name gets talked about a lot on nameberry and does seem to be rising in the charts, but there definitely aren’t multiple Adelaides running around near us or near any of the friends we know across our country (we’re in [name_f]Canada[/name_f]).

It is a name that almost always gets positive reactions from people and almost everyone says it is not a name they have heard before.

One caveat: We don’t like the nickname ‘[name_f]Addy[/name_f]’ and have never used it for our daughter; however, if you are considering using that nickname, there are many Addisons and some Adelyns out there who often have their names shortened to ‘[name_f]Addy[/name_f]’. And, even though we don’t use [name_f]Addy[/name_f], it was still somewhat confusing cheering for our daughter during soccer games as she played among at least 3 other girls whose names started with ‘[name_m]Ad[/name_m]’. That being said, we love her name ad have no regrets about choosing it!
