How common is Hazel in the ‘wild’?

[name_u]Hazel[/name_u] is currently our frontrunner or “name to beat”, probably [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] [name_f]Augusta[/name_f]. We have lots of reasons why and really love the name. However, none of our other kids have common names, and I’ve always avoided popular names, so I feel like I’m in uncharted territory by considering a common name.

We currently live in Central Europe, so we haven’t met or heard of any Hazels at all, but we’ll move back to the US in the next few years, so I’m leary of the reality that we might show up and suddenly realize [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] is everywhere.

So what’s your experience? Rankings aside, how often do you hear of or meet a [name_u]Hazel[/name_u]?

First of all, [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] is a lovely name!!

I personally don’t know or ever hear about any Hazels, young or older. The only [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] I’ve ever heard about was a girl I read in a fanfic once.

I live in the eastern US, so I don’t know how it is in other areas.

I live in Western [name_f]Canada[/name_f] and know of only 2 Hazels under 5. There was about 85 “Hazels” including alternate spellings born in my Province out of 50,000+ babies last year. It is growing in popularity but it’s nowhere near the most popular names which are about 250 babies each year.

[name_u]Hazel[/name_u] [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] is an absolutely beautiful name!
I live in [name_u]West[/name_u] [name_u]Coast[/name_u] [name_f]Canada[/name_f], and there I know two little Hazel’s under the age of four.
In the US, the daughter of a family friend is named [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] (she’s about 10) and I also met a teen [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] while travelling in [name_m]Washington[/name_m].
I would say that [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] is popular, but not as popular as other very common names like [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]. I run into Hazel’s once in a while, so the name is not a surprise to me when I hear it- but I would expect a [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] to be the only one in her class.

[name_u]Hazel[/name_u] [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] is gorgeous :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

So, my name is [name_u]Hazel[/name_u], and for most of my life I’d never met another. I still haven’t met any older than age 6. But I have met a few 6 and under! Probably about five girls? I’m in the US.
It’s still not even close to the amount of young girls I’ve met or heard of named [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], etc.

Thank you!

That’s good to hear! I know statistically fewer kids have the top names, and [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] isn’t at the very top, but I’m having trouble figuring out if it would repeat to the point of bothering me.

While my older kids are teens, so I’ve been in the school-aged world for over a decade, we live in a very international, expat community, so the names we are used to hearing span the globe  It’s really fun, and awesome as a name nerd, but it makes it really hard for me to gauge how popular is too popular back home.

Your replies and experiences are really encouraging so far! Thank you

You’ve got a beautiful name! And how fun to have grown up with it when it was “all yours” and not very common

Hard to gauge because regardless of what we say, wherever you move there will be like six in her class :joy:

But I am eastern USA (originally Midwest) and I don’t know that I’ve ever encountered someone named [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] in either place. It was #27 in 2022 (2023 hasn’t been released yet) so it’s pretty up there although not top 10. [name_f]Grace[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] are everywhere right now. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you know what state you’ll move to? I’d look at that state’s (if it’s published) [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] rankings. [name_u]Or[/name_u] even a region, look a few states in that region.

I found this nifty site (mynamestats) and, according to it, [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] is pretty popular. [name_u]California[/name_u] has the most people named [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] but Mississippi is where you’re most likely to meet one! [name_f]Pretty[/name_f] interesting. As I expected, it looks to be more common in the [name_u]South[/name_u]. (Arkansas, Mississippi, [name_f]Alabama[/name_f], [name_u]South[/name_u] Carolina)

However, [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] is lovely so I think it’ll be okay! [name_u]Or[/name_u] you could do [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] if you’re really worried about it maybe?

I live in [name_u]England[/name_u] and have met a few Hazels. One is 7 years old, one is 3 years old and one is 35 years old. [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] feels like an established classic like [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] or [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. You’ll get Hazel’s everywhere due to how established the name is. I wouldn’t let popularity of an enduring classic put you off the name she’s gorgeous!

I don’t think I’ve ever met one (other than a hamster lol), or if I have it was long ago that I don’t remember. Though I feel like it might be most popular with really young kids, which I don’t know a lot of.

[name_u]Hazel[/name_u] [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] is a fun combo!

[name_u]Hazel[/name_u] [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] is beautiful!

I have a 2 year old so I’m around kids that age a lot. I actually haven’t met any Hazel’s around this age yet. I know one baby [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] and I know a [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] from a realty tv show. But it’s not as common around here (midwest) as I would think!

I’m in the Midwest and know two Hazels. One is maybe 10? The other is less than 2. They live in different states, but both in the Midwest.

All of my kids have unusual names and we’re considering a much more popular one for our next baby, so I understand your hesitation. :slightly_smiling_face: It seems from these comments though that you don’t have much to worry about!

I’m in the [name_u]South[/name_u] and I believe it’s a bit more popular here, but I don’t believe I’ve known more than five or so? It’s definitely rising in popularity and familiar for most people, but not ubiquitous at the moment!

[name_u]Hazel[/name_u] is a lovely, warm, friendly choice :yellow_heart:

Isn’t that the truth?! And right after I said we didn’t know any Hazel’s here, my son tells me there’s a [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] in the other kindergarten class at his school, so I’ve eaten my words there :joy:

That’s a good idea to check the stats in individual states/regions. We’ll likely end up back in the Midwest/Rockies, but could possibly be the mid-Atlantic region. I’ll take a look at that!
