How common is Lillian, really?

Okay, hear me out. I normally would never use a super popular name, but I think if it’s a middle, it’s kind of an exception like I’d maybe consider [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] or [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] as middles. Anyway, I’ve been thinking of [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] for a few months, but every time it pops up, I just think it’s too common. It’s #34!!! I know tons of Lilys spelled 5 million ways, but not all of them are Lillians, and I’ve never heard someone just go by [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] (which I think they should).

[name_m]How[/name_m] many Lillians do you know? Would it work with an uncommon but somewhat familiar first name? Bonus: [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] was also my great-grandmother’s name!

How do you feel about Chaya Lillian or Nomi Lillian? Maybe Neve Lillian?

I am a [name_f]Lilian[/name_f]. I have only ever met 5. One was in her 80s when I was a child. One was a couple years my junior in college. One would be about 15 now, one about 10 now, and I recently met an infant named [name_f]Lillian[/name_f].

I never went by [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and have used my full name since I was about 13. All of those Lillians were Lillians. I’ve never met another [name_f]Lilian[/name_f], though I have heard of others through the grapevine of acquaintances and relatives of acquaintances and relatives.

Well you have a great name! [name_f]Do[/name_f] you live in the US?? If so, I’m really surprised that all of them go by their full name, but I think it’s awesome as [name_f]Lily[/name_f] seems to common now.

Yep. I live in the US. Originally from [name_u]California[/name_u], spent a bunch of years in Massachusetts before settling in Michigan.

I teach fifth grade in the US. This year in my class of 21 I had two Lillians and a [name_f]Liliana[/name_f]. All three liked to be called [name_f]Lily[/name_f]. I haven’t met any babies or toddlers named [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] recently though.

Oh no! I definitely feel like the name is getting less popular. Lots of Lillians/Lilys that are my age and I know one baby named [name_f]Lily[/name_f] as well.

Not common at all that I’m aware of! [name_f]My[/name_f] mom seriously considered [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] for one of my sisters, and she would have been [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], not “[name_f]Lily[/name_f]”. I think it seems very underrated, despite its ranking!

Of your options, [name_f]Chaya[/name_f] [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] is particularly striking, and I really like the sound of it.

Thank you! I’m not sure how I didn’t think of that combo a long time ago!

Thank you so much! I definitely will be moving (to boston specifically) for college but with Covid it might be postponed :frowning:

I know more [name_f]Lily[/name_f]’s than [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]. And it’s kinda common but doesn’t really feel like it. If that makes sense. And possibly most [name_f]Lily[/name_f]’s are [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]’s on paper and in records versus social life.

I’ve never met a [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]. [name_m]Plenty[/name_m] of Lilys but never a [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]

Lilith is super cool and I’ve always loved the origin story too!

I don’t think it’s common, because I’ve only heard Lillys and every other spelling variation. I really like your [name_f]Chaya[/name_f] [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]!! Maybe you would consider [name_f]Jaya[/name_f] [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] too?

I know one [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] aged 7 but she is pretty exclusively called [name_f]Lily[/name_f].

I live in the US and I know one person, the teenage little sister of a friend of mine, named [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]. She went by [name_f]Lilly[/name_f] as a child but is now trying to go by [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] because she thinks it sounds more formal and adult. It’s hard for me to think of her as [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] because I’ve known her so long as [name_f]Lilly[/name_f], even though I actually prefer the longer version. I do think the majority of people named [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] go by [name_f]Lily[/name_f]/Lillie/Lilly though. I know tons of people with one of those names and for most of them I’m unsure whether it’s their given name or a nickname for Lillian.

For what it’s worth, I think it’s a beautiful name, popularity doesn’t matter as much with a middle name, and it sounds great with all your potential first names.

I can’t think of a [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]! I have known a ton of Lilys and Lillys and other spellings, but I don’t know how many/if any of them are short for [name_f]Lillian[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], so I think use it if you like it.

That said, I know at least 3 Lillians and at least one went by her full name. I know or have met probably 10+ [name_f]Lilly[/name_f]/Lily’s that some probably were Lillians, some weren’t. I’m in my early 20s & love in the US. Most were either around my age or young kids from working at a summer camp.

I know two [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]’s, one is in high school and the other is about 6 months old. Both go by [name_f]Lily[/name_f] or [name_f]Lil[/name_f]

I’ve never met a [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] who goes by her full name! It definitely doesn’t seem popular to me, since they all seem to go by [name_f]Lily[/name_f]!
